KEARNEY, Neb. - After playing for more than two seasons in the United State Hockey League, Tri-City Storm forward Matt Johnson made his college commitment to Ohio State University for the Fall of 2011.
Johnson, who is in his third year in the USHL, is having his best start to a season in his career with seven goals, five assists and a plus-4 rating in 22 games. Mostly known for his penalty killing, defensive awareness and shot blocking ability, he has accumulated 32 points (18 goals and 14 assists) in 117 games in the USHL.
"I grew up in Minnesota, so for me it wasn't a school that I had really thought about attending. But, with the campus and the coaching staff in place, it was a great fit for my future in college hockey," said Johnson, who is a native of Stillwater, Minnesota.
"We are very excited for Matt, who has earned this college opportunity through hard work on and off the ice," said Head Coach/General Manager Drew Schoneck. "It goes to show that hard work pays off, and we are glad to see Ohio State recruit him."
The 19-year old, who is 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, was traded to the Storm from Waterloo at the start of last season, and say's that Tri-City has meant a lot to him and wants to thank the fan base the proper way at the end of the season.
"Kearney has been great for me as a player and person. This is my last season, so I want to go out with a bang and go out on top in a place that I've enjoyed playing for over the past couple years," Johnson said.
