Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

Re: Schafer

Re: Schafer

I don't understand what you are getting at...

Is the allegation here that Oz pulled his financial aid/scholarship or is it just that he "ran him off" (for lack of a better term) by making it obvious that there was going to be little or no playing time, so the guy up and left.

If it is the latter, I have less than absolutely no problem with it. He was brought in to win and implement his program, within the parameters of the rules as long as he does that, I am OK with it.

If it is the former, I do have a problem with it. These kids came in with an understood commitment from the University that shouldn't change with a coaching change. They should have the opportunity to continue to receive their funding and pursue their degree. This is very different than continuing to have an opportunity to play on the hockey team.

In other words - as long as they are still being made whole with the money to go to school - I don't particularly care if Oz pushes them out of the hockey program if they arent good enough or don't fit with what he wants to do. On the other hand, if he is cutting their funding off, I have a problem with that.

What are you suggesting happened with Schafer?

The problem with Oz "pushing them out of the hockey program if they aren't good enough or don't fit with what he wants to do" is this:
These players are recruited by Ohio State for four years to receive their degree and play hockey.
If they aren't good enough they should sit, be coached and hopefully get the chance to fit back in the lineup.
If this new coaching staff is now going to cut players from the team, and yes...honor their scholarship for their education....how many HOCKEY RECRUITS do you think will perhaps choose another school over Ohio State?
These players choose the NCAA to go to school, play hockey, and hopefully move to a higher level.
I know that Oz now has a group of players that have been recruited by another coaching staff....but do you not think that these players were as happy and excited to have a new and better coach as the rest of us?
I'm not saying that in the future Oz will cut his own recruits.....but what if THEY aren't good enough or don't fit in?
It will hurt Ohio State recruiting.

Sounds like the perfect training scenario for their hoped for professional hockey careers. If you aren't good enough you get shown the door. And that happens at every level of professional hockey.

As long as they get the promised scholarship money I too have no problem with it.

It's not training camp, they are not professionals. This is still a development program.
If you want the program to succeed, you will need a top notch recruiting program.
You will not succeed in recruiting student athletes if you continue to cut "upperclassmen" because they don't meet your immediate expectations. These athletes were good enough to be recruited by not only OSU, some of them by other NCAA schools. For whatever reason, they chose Ohio State.
Osiecki should be coaching these players, not cutting them from the team. All of these players have competed at high levels throughout their hockey careers and have had to conform to new coaches at different stages.
If Osiecki continues this process in the future it will taint the OSU recruiting process. If given a choice, a hockey player will choose an NCAA school that will commit to four years of hockey development and a scholarship.

It appears we disagree.

I am quite comfortable with the approach Oz is taking. The kids that were brought in by the previous regime were promised a chance at an education and a chance to play D1 hockey. It sounds like Oz is honoring both. They were not promised playing time, simply the chance for playing time. It has been determined that a handful aren't good enough or doing enough to earn that playing time and either choose to leave or it is suggested they may be better off leaving. Sounds fair enough to me, as long as they have the option of the free (or partially free depending on their overall scholarship situation) education available to them.

Re: OSU recruiting

I have a question for anyone who might know, since the entire northeast is practically shut down due to the snowfall will the team be able to get to this weekends games in Vermont?

Re: OSU recruiting

Re: OSU recruiting

first game is Saturday and the ususal schedule would have them leaving tomorrow. Don't know where they are flying "to" (Boston, Albany?) but suspect things will clear out by tomorrow.

I have no idea about their travel schedule, but having lived and worked in New England for many years there is no reason they wouldn't fly directly into Burlington. The airport there is more than equipped to handle jet and regional jets. Flying into the other places would be a logistical driving nightmare.

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

A fan wouldn't be this bitter and voice opinion in such a manner in an obvious attempt to discredit the program. Has to be someone with a chip on their shoulder, either a player or parent. My money's on a parent. At least one persons sour grapes won't hurt us in recruiting. The program is on an upward swing and if a kid's smart enough to attend college he's smart enough to not be deceived by one person crying foul.

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

(I found this info on the Buckey news feed on the team web-site.)

Best Wishes to No. 9
Senior Patrick Schafer signed a professional contract with the Arizona Sundogs of the Central Hockey League early this week, ending his collegiate career. Schafer played in 122 games as a Buckeyes, with 11 goals and 24 assists for 35 points. He skated in 14 games this season, with one assist. Former Buckeye Kyle Hood also plays for Arizona, where he is the team’s third-leading scorer. Schafer scored a goal in his first professional game Wednesday.

( I think this is why there busing instead of flying. They are stopping to see the USA team play and Root on there Coach OZ. )

U-S-A!
First-year Buckeye head coach Mark Osiecki is currently with Team USA at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship in Buffalo, N.Y., serving as an assistant coach for the squad. Osiecki was also on the coaching staff last season when the U.S. squad captured the gold medal. On their way to Vermont, the Buckeyes will stop in Buffalo to watch the U.S., which opened the tournament 2-0, take on Germany Thursday night.

" GO BUCKEYES. " " GO USA. "

The guy definately has a chip on his shoulder!! Sounds like he needs to realize that maybe his kid wasn't good enough to play for Oz in his system and stop all the complaining. Give it up already, we have been reading this crap for almost 4 months now. Can't wait to see how the recruiting class turns out just to shut him up.

Re: Ohio State 2010/2011 - No way but up.

Went back to read his rant on the other board and then searched for other posts by him too. Looks like he got the same reaction from others that he is getting from us, so that probably just ******e$ him off more since no one anywhere will listen to his whining!

Ok , back to hockey talk. How do you think the Bucks will do in this tournament? Will it be a good thing after the Christmas break or will we come out flat and rusty!!! My geuss is all teams will come out at least the first period alittle unorganized and then get better. " GO BUCKS GO. "

I wouldnt be surprised to see them come out flat against vermont and get behind early and not be able to get back in the game 4-1 loss to vermont. Army is a team they should be able to beat most times out of the gate 3-0 victory.

especially since Vermont played an exhibition game Wednesday night.

If you think it is bad now, wait until next year. The roster is set to have three goalies including the returning starter who will be a senior. None of those guys (Heeter, Hjelle, Skoff) really fits the profile of backup who plays little - and certainly none of them fits the profile of third goalie who never plays or redshirts.

I dont know how Oz is going to handle that one - but me thinks Sports Fan 1's head is going to explode regardless of the decision.
