Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

The US has a men's field hockey team it just didn't qualify for the Olympics.

Love the attitude.

It only a women's sport here in the US. In the rest of the world it's more popular with men than women. My wife's HS team had a boy on it. The only requirement was he had to wear the same uniform, which part of it was a kilt. :)

The club team I currently play with has about a 25% / 75% ratio of men to women on it. Obviously coed and thank god we don't wear kilts. ;) Myself and two other guys are American born the rest are from either Europe or India.

What's wrong with a kilt?

They're drafty, I don't have the legs for it, and I'm not Scottish! ;)

You don't have to be Scottish. English princes from Albert to Charles wore kilts. What William and Harry found wrong with them, I wouldn't know.

You have to like a womens volleyball player named Destinee Hooker

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

No disrespect to Michael Phelps, but Sebastian Coe's right. Certainly Phelps is the greatest swimmer in the history of the world. And the most decorated Olympic athlete. He richly deserves and has earned both titles. But greatest Olympic athlete ever? The names of possible contenders for THAT title is mind boggling. How about 2 time decathalon champion Bob Mathias, who won gold when he was 17? Or Al Oerter, four time discus champion? Or Eric Heiden, winner of all five speed skating events at Lake Placid? Or Sonja Heine? Or Pavvo Nurmi? Or Carl Lewis? Or the sainted Jesse Owens? And on and on. Swimmers and gymnasts have an advantage, they have multiple events to contest. Most others compete in only one or perhaps two events. Is Cassius Clay not as great becuse he only won one gold medal?

Michael Phelps is THE towering figure in world and US swimming history. And he is certainly one of a tiny handful of the greatest Olympic athletes of all time. I'm pretty sure he would agree with that, since it is so manifestly true. Putting that question to Lord Coe strikes me as more "gotcha" than anything else.

The US men's synchronized divers are named Christian and Troy. Heh, that's funny.

I know some guys that want to play field hockey, but weren't able to because it wasn't offered for men, and I assume their school did not wish to cross gender barriers.
I was the same way with volleyball. At the vast majority of schools it's girls only, yet the amount of boys that would play if offered would be high.

I remember wanting to play volleyball a bit when I learned that I was pretty good at a running jump serve. But, I also remember getting over it pretty quickly.

After he retired from pro basketball, Wilt Chamberlain played in a pro volleyball league. He was ridiculously dominant in the front line (don't remember how well, or even if, he played in the back row). If you get a chance to watch the middle hitter on Russia's men's team, you can get a sense of how dominant a quick, agile, strong, big man can be. The Russian guy is 7'2" and with a good set he just hits over the block. Really awesome player. Strong server too.

Similarly with Dallhauser (sp?) of US men's beach volleyball. He was a lot more dominant in 2008 when he and Rogers won the gold.

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

I'm frustrated watching the abbreviated beach volleyball "highlights" on NBC. So they block out the entire game from the online feed, only to hack job the three games into a nice neat video highlight package? And don't give a sh*t about letting the viewers know?

The article on the TOP of NBCNews.com (which, posted the results hours ago) contained more information about this match-up than NBC's "footage." I shouldn't have to resort to reading about the entire second game and have the commentators pretend the second match didn't exist.

This would be like the NHL and NBC deciding that "You know, we're not going to air the Live Red Wings vs Nashville Stanley Cup playoff game today at Noon. Instead, you'll find it time condensed into a neat two hour package on NHL Network later tonight."

Err, wait, I better delete that before some NBC executive gets a bright idea...
