Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

really fun interview here with the graphic artist who has posters all over London...not your typical Olympic posters, either!

Well worth the 6.5 minutes or whatever to read it.

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

There are so many ways to measure that though. Its certainly not the second most lucrative sport in the world. I think both field hockey and cricket benefit from being popular on the sub-continent and just the sheer mass of people Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India contain. China doesn't really seem to have a dominant team sport so there isn't much boost from the other global demographic behemoth.

Other than soccer, virtually every other team sport is regionally popular. Ice Hockey, Field Hockey, Rugby, Baseball, Basketball, Handball, and Cricket all seem to be quite popular among 10 or so countries and fringe sports in the rest of the world.

*tweet* two minutes in the box for using "ice hockey" here. :D

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

Just turned on the TV and an American woman won gold in Judo. However, there were two bronze medal winners. How does that work? I don't know much about Judo but the one match I watched earlier I swore they had sudden death even if the five minutes went out.

Also, four badminton teams were charged with throwing matches. Reminds me of that South Park episode where every Little League team tries to lose so they don't have to keep playing.

...And there was a Mitt Romney ad on during the Olympics. What stupid PAC decided to ruin the Olympics with a political commercial?

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

Geno Auriemma has done something interesting in the past two women's basketball games....five substitutions at the same time! Of course, when your second team consists of multi-year college All-American and WNBA All-Stars, there's not necessarily that much of a difference (2nd string is Maya Moore, Tina Charles, Lindsay Whalen, Angel McCoughtry....a who's who of women's basketball luminaries). Their normal starting center hasn't even played in the last two games at all because of a nagging foot injury.

It's a bit disconcerting to see how mellow Geno is at the Olympics compared to watching him prowl the sidelines for UConn. I guess he really does adjust to his players; these are professional women not college kids, and he clearly has adjusted appropriately.

In some sports, the two athletes who lose in the semi-finals each get a bronze. I think that is determined by each sport's international governing body, not sure. Boxing works that way too if I'm not mistaken.

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

All of the hand-to-hand combat sports (boxing, judo, taekwondo, wrestling) award 2 bronze medals.

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

So I'm guessing there's no consolation match? And Great Britain apparently forgot the most basic late-game basketball strategy.

The current incumbent is running them too.

And he does not have to worry about APR's, the NCAA, or those stinkin' boosters.

Carmelo Anthony breaks the US record of 31 points in an Olympic game. He has 34. It's still the 3rd quarter. He's on fire right now.

107-58 with 2 minutes left in the third. USA had 49 points in the first quarter. Good freakin' Lord.

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

USA will most likely break the Olympic record for points. They have 119 after three, the record is 138 by Brazil.

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

There it is. They're up by 71 with 4:20 to go.

They might hit 150. This is like watching the Globetrotters vs. the Washington Generals.

Re: Official XXX Summer Olympiad: London 2012- Take II

How did Nigeria make it through five games to even qualify for the Olympics? Are there really teams who were in contention to qualify that are worse than this?

Where's Red Putz when you really need him?

Nigeria beat the Dominican Republic to make it here. The Dominican Republic lost to the US by 54. Now the US is having one of the greatest shooting nights in the history of the game, but Nigeria is turning the ball over like they're a high school team.

It's too late now, of course. Maybe the USA should have considered Hackman's strategy in "Hoosiers," "My team is on the floor." Probably against the rules.
