Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Do you have to give them credit card information when you sign up? I've never actually bought anything on PSN, so unless it was part of the sign-up deal I can't imagine they have any of that info. I'm just drawing a blank on that part.

One of the payment methods for DLC, downloadable games, etc. is credit card, which you can save to PSN so you can just buy things on the fly. It's not clear whether this info was accessed, or if it was encrypted (which would render it useless to a hacker.)

What hackers do have, however, is your personal info (name, e-mail address, password, address, birthday, answers to security questions, etc.) Odds are you might have used that same information on, say, your bank website. Uh-oh.

1. Not on PSN. Bought console during hack downtime. Whoops.
2. Annoying as all hell: NO I do NOT wanna sign into the PSN, which GT5 asks me at every move I make until I get to my GT5 home. Why? Because I CAN'T!
3. No Netflix streaming. Why you need a PSN account to stream Netflix, I dunno. *ers.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Tried to do this. They were asking me questions I had no idea of the answer to, like roommates from college I'd never heard of. Got one, but timed out on the second trying to print the first one and couldn't get the third.
Hahah thats the whole point of those questions. They are asking things that didn't happen to you necessarily, so you answer "none of the above" if it doesn't apply to you.

I had one about a home mortgage. I've never owned a home.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Sony answered some questions on G4TV.com. It sounds like CC data was encrypted. So thats a blessing.

Full Q&A

Q: Was personal data encrypted?

A: All of the data stored in the PSN was protected "physically" and within a security network. The credit card table was encrypted and Sony sees no evidence that credit card data was taken. However, the personal data, which includes your name, email address, billing address among others, was not encrypted.

Q: Was credit card information taken?

A: Again, Sony has no evidence credit card data was taken but they "cannot rule out the possibility." "If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained." The security code, sometime referred to as the CVC or CSC, was not accessible because Sony never stored it.

Yeah, I get that, I answered "none of the above" and it rejected me anyway.

You can still stream netflix with PSN down. Try logging in, it should work on the 2nd/3rd attempt.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Just got my "we dun goofed" e-mail from Sony.

Hearing rumors that PSN will be back up May 4.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

I don't think he can because its brand new...

Yep, it tells me I have to be a member of PSN, which I can't do, because it's down so I can't register. My buddy who has a PS3 did succeed in getting Netflix after a couple tries, because he was already a member of PSN.

And MAY *ING 4TH?!

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

So remember the conversation about other services not paying for PSN's downtime? An email I got yesterday says otherwise.

Dear MLB.TV Subscriber,

As a result of the PlayStation Network outage, MLB.TV subscribers who are also PlayStation Network subscribers cannot access MLB.TV through the PlayStation Network. However, MLB.TV subscribers can still watch live and on-demand baseball on their computers and other supported devices, including iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Android devices, Apple TV, Roku, LG, Panasonic, Samsung, Popbox, and Boxee. A separate purchase of MLB.com At Bat 11 is required to access MLB.TV on certain mobile devices. For details and a full list of supported devices, click here.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the PlayStation Network outage, which Sony has stated will be corrected next week. We recognize that not being able to access MLB.TV on PS3 may be frustrating. We would like to offer you a one-time $5 credit to your existing MLB.TV account. There is no action required. The $5 will be automatically credited to the credit or debit card associated with your MLB.TV account.

We will provide new information about accessing MLB.TV on your PS3 if and when it becomes available. For more information regarding the PlayStation Network outage, please refer to the PlayStation blog - blog.us.playstation.com.

Sincerely,

MLB.com

Ok, how farking sad is it when MLB is the paragon of customer service following an incident? This is the same corporate entity that blackouts half the farking league in certain areas.

Hulu also offered people a free week.

And now Sony's saying that they did get credit card info after all, not sure if it was encrypted or not.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Got my email. Nothing I haven't heard before. Curious to see what happens with the class action. I think Twitch's suggestion of free credit monitoring is a good idea, but if no credit card information was taken then I wonder what kind of quantifiable damage they're going to come up with. Class action lawyers can be pretty devious though and I'm sure they'll think of something.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Sony presser:

PSN will be up later this week, except PS Store which might take a month or so while they secure it.

Working on a "Welcome Back" package which includes 30 free days of PSN Plus and free downloads. Also vague mentions of reimbursing replacement fees for credit cards and offers of ID theft protection/credit monitoring.

Well it's seems to be a pretty decent offer. At the least they seem to know that they need to do something big.

I'm most concerned about ID theft/credit monitoring. My ability to get a mortgage in a year or two is more important than free Angry Birds.

Dumb question of the day: what is PSN Plus?

And for the free downloads, will you still have to enter your CC info? Because if so, I am not participating in that, since I wasn't going to buy any downloads to begin with.

Re: Official Video Games Thread VI: Somebody set us up the bomb

Dumb question of the day: what is PSN Plus?

Their souped-up pay service. Has monthly goodies of its own and cloud storage (basically storage space spread out in "space" so you don't have to take up room on your hard drive.)

And for the free downloads, will you still have to enter your CC info? Because if so, I am not participating in that, since I wasn't going to buy any downloads to begin with.

You can actually use PSN without a CC at all. You can buy point cards at Best Buy and redeem them on PSN for download funds. Which is what a lot of people will be doing from now on.

ETA: the free downloads will be for regular PSN I presume.

The last blue minikit challange on Lego Star Wars: TCS makes me sad. It's keeping me from 100% completion. :( Mostly its because you are flying towards the screen trying to avoid objects as they come towards you, while still trying to pick up the minikits, making it a game of memorization. Add on to that a time limit for extra frustration!

However I did finish the buggy Fable 3 (+dlc) achievements. So that's something.

After that I played GTAIV and shot people at the strip club to help me relax.
