Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

Here's a dumb question for you guys:

I don't play games a ton, but I like sports/racing games, obviously. Also would like to expand into more turn-based strategy games (see: Romance Of The Three Kingdoms series, which I love). Finally, I highly doubt I'd get into the online gaming thing like many of you are into. So, which system do you recommend? PS3, or XBox? And how is the red ring of death these days?

Two tipping points towards the PS3: I could use a new dvd player, and I've always been a Playstation guy.

Something else to consider: XBox 360 plays DVDs, PS3 does DVDs and Blu-Rays.

If you're just looking for something cheap to play Madden, etc. on, you can find starter level 360s for $200 nowadays.

Microsoft has modified the part of the system that was responsible for the RRoD. It's a lot less frequent on newer consoles, but still there.

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

Re: RROD - They came out with a new version of the 360 in the last year, so not sure that is an issue anymore. Although i have no evidence in either direction. I have the model just before that (elite) and had a regular one prior to that and never had an issue with either of those.

If you have a decent PC you might consider looking at Steam and see if they have a selection of TBS games you would want to play. The upside is that an account is free and most of their games are ridiculously cheap, and you can play on any computer after you buy it.

If you don't care about having an online account then you can pretty much pick either system. I would say the 360 does online integration better overall if that does become important. The pro for PS3 is that they have a free version of their online community.

Ultimately PC is the best choice for turn based strategy games. I can't name that many on PS3 or 360.

Does either system have their classic games for the new systems (like Twisted Metal 2 from PS1, etc)?

Edit: and are the graphics from those games affected on HDTV? I know I can't really play TM2 on my tv right now.

As long as you have a good sized Hard Drive both systems have older games for sale via their online stores. You could browse the 360 store here. I don't think its possible to browse the PS3 one, but there are old games there.

As far as HD, I haven't had a problem with the video on mine and I've played old games like FF7.

Also I know a select few discs from the old systems used to work, but that is not reliable.

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

So apparently R3 turns on windshield wipers. Did not know that.

If you want something RTS or Turn based there is no other option.

Been leveling in WoW since I got enough of the game downloaded to let it stream. I actually made a mistake by using a Draenei instead of one of the vanilla races since most of their gear has been revamped and their leveling zones while Draenei and Blood Elves are the same. Still decent but they aren't using the new gear. The gear you get seems to be better from quests since there are a lot that have you go out and kill a semi-elite mob. Some of which have neat little mechanics. Like this goblin I think it was that had this burrow mechanic that scared the crap out of me. First it was attacking my pet then bam a cloud of smoke under me and it's biting my ankles.

Once I got off the starter isle I started doing some of the Cataclysm prequest stuff that's available at the main cities that send you to different zones which turned out to be a good way to explore. Thankfully they put in more fly points which cut down on travel from quest hubs. The gear you get from each zone matches so you end up looking like you have a tier like set if you finish all of them. Where before you ended up looking like you were dressed in the dark by a two year old.

I do have a problem with quest item drops not being 100%. I think I ended up killing like 20 of these mobs just to get 5 of the quest items. The game is padded enough, just give me the average xp it would take to get all the items when I turn in the quest and call it good. Nobody wants to spend more time leveling than they already do, and being an overpowered hunter it gets old fast unless they have mechanics. Which most don't.

And hunters are overpowered. You can spam abilities and your pet acts like your own personal tank. Ammo has been taken out so no concern about running out. I was even doing battlegrounds at level 10 and was dropping players 3-4 levels higher than me in heirloom gear. (Gear you can purchase at high levels to get you an experience boost for leveling alts. It scales the stats to always better than anything you can get otherwise.)

They did screw up by having the game world change to what it will be like for Cataclysm when they should have waited till the release of that and had a world event that could have lasted a week as different crazy stuff happened everyday.

Edit. Not cata prequests, they are call to arms for problems that are occurring as a result of Deathwing arriving.

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

A wild Donkey Kong appears!

I finished up at Booty Bay then I was teleported by a quest giver all the way to Andorhal to go do battle with a bunch of undead... with explosives! Explosives that take out 30 of them in one go. I wished that had been phased because killing a ton of undead only to walk by and see them respawn a minute later sort of breaks immersion when you just wiped them out and their leaders.

edit
There's a second Andorhal fight that is phased off from the previous and is a lot of fun. It also leads up to something later on dealing directly with the Forsaken that I haven't gotten to yet. On top of that the entire quest chain for Eastern Plaguelands is excellent. Get to travel with a worgen, and her two quarreling dwarf and blood elf friends on a wagon as you visit several quest hubs.

Ok, so I'm finally going to break down and get a new XBox and a couple of games. Thoughts on where to get it from/best deals? I'd like to spend less than $400.

I would say just shop online today. They are likely to be cheapest right now.

Dell has the new 360+ Kinect +4gb hdd for $299 or the elite 360 +120gb hdd for same price.

Rock Band 3 is $39.95 (Amazon)
The Wii version is $34.95, even.

Unfortunately if I want to start playing Rock Band then I need to buy a whole load of plastic instruments. Bah.

Edit to add: The PS3 bundle, is that with games you can choose, or is it only crappy games that they can't sell any other way?

Uncharted 2 and Pixel Junk Shooter. So very good games.

The blu-ray movie is crappy though, The Karate Kid (new one i believe).

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

GT5: Most infuriating game of all time.

B-Spec is without a doubt in my mind one of the WORST implemented featured portions of a game ever. Simply put, it's terrible. The races are about 25%-50% too long. The driver would likely be legally classified as mentally retarded in real life. I can't find a single redeeming quality for B-Spec.

The VW Van race? GOing fine until someone bumps you and you have to start over, which blows because that van has no place in this game. It's a piece of ****.

B-Spec is a money making dream. Enter race, go do something else, come back and collect 1st place money, experience and a free car after every set of races and race levels.

Yeah, except when you're beyond the first two races. After that it's not nearly as easy.

I have yet to lose and I am halfway through the Amateur Race set. Finished everything in Beginner already.

My NSX '99 is currently crushing the Japanese 90's Challenge.

Yeah, my guy struggles with anything beyond those races. Lots of struggles. I gave the poor sono********* an 800-hp Ferrari and he still lost races. Waaaay too powerful.

Look at "Typical Opponents" to see what HP/Weight you need and then make sure you choose a car thats better. Occassionally you will need to upgrade a couple parts.

I do Exhaust, Intake, and ECU tuning first as they are cheapest parts.

Same here. I did the mazda challenge and also upgraded my engine and a few other things and he still can't finish better than 3rd.
