Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

Thinking of thread titles as we reach 900 posts.

Official Video Games Thread VI: GT Nissan Skyline Edition

Because about 1,030 of the cars in GT5 are Skylines, leaving only 1 other model which is the Toyota Prius.

Other possible topics:
L.A. Noire, Epic Mickey, Tron Legacy, Black Ops, Brotherhood, Kinect, Move, FM11.

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

Found out that Amazon does free shipping to AK.

PS3/GT5 here I come!

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

Poker Night at the Inventory has reminded me of how much I suck at poker.

For 5 bucks, absolutely worth the pick-up though.

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

It's not advertised but there's a sale for upgrading Wow accounts for all expansions up to and including Cataclysm for 50% off. Saved me about 50$ since somehow I didn't have TBC. (Which was only 5$ to upgrade to anyways)

GT5 is somewhat of a let down. Impressive but still a let down nonetheless.

The 45 minute install time and there are still loading screens that seem to take forever.

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

Hey, I actually won a couple games of poker, on Hard no less.

One I ended up heads-up against Strong Bad and one against Tycho.

Poker against computers isn't poker. They always have a pattern, and it's tough to bluff, since computers are stats/odds-driven. ;)

And just read about GT5. Blech. I don't want to be a gearhead to play the game. GT4 was insane enough where I gave up on it, due to a race or two where I figured out (finally) that you had to mess with the gear ratios and such. Hell, I pay people to change my oil, because I don't wanna learn how to do it myself. You think I want to tweak an engine in a game for fun?

Yeah, supposedly every character has "tells" and a different personality. For instance, Heavy (from Team Fortress 2) WILL NOT STOP FARKING RAISING ME PRE-FLOP and it's killing me. Adding insult to injury, he's supposedly one of the more conservative players - when he bets, he usually is for real.

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

I'm an idiot.

Get this HORRIBLE 4.0 patch finally downloaded and FINALLY get it to install. It requires something like 30 gigs of free space to install because instead of updating things, it just reinstalls the entire game then overwrites the original. Start up the game to log in and get a bad game version. I go ****! Cause that took hours just to install the patch. Well since that usually means the game is messed up I do a fresh install and get to the point where I can log in while the game is still getting content. (The streaming content is a pretty nice feature) and find out that I just entered my log in information wrong. So now I have to redownload 16 gigs at 450kb/s.

FML.

Finally sat down and raced my first GT5 race. The "rubbin' is racin'" mentality from Forza 3 really paid off as I started in 5th position and won my first race by 2 seconds. :D

ETA: Swept the 3 race Sunday Cup with 1st place finishes and got the 2 free cars (kart and something else) for doing so.

Oh, I also bought Epic Mickey on Black Friday from the Disney Store. They had 20% off so even after shipping and tax it was only $50.54. So I saved a good $6 over buying it locally.

All the GT games have been like that,. Ever try to beat the Formula GT series (the one using the classic F1 cars) from GT3?

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

GT5 Blog: Made level 3 in both A-Spec and B-Spec, passed the B license (not all gold). About $170k banked.

B-Spec is OK, but the double length races and not being able to skip laps could make it tedious. My first drivers name is F.Cash. :D

I know you always COULD tweak, but it wasn't completely necessary like it is now. (haven't done the F1 thing you're talking about)

That's what I think sets this series apart in that you have to understand how a car works to succeed at the game... This is the most in-depth console racing game out there right now... The only thing more advanced are some of the PC based sim-racing games... You can't just go through and crash your way to victory... You need to understand the racing line, braking/acceleration, gearing, etc...

I think that GT has rightfully steered away from the arcade style of racing that you are looking for... There are several other games that fill the arcade-style racer genre, but almost zero realistic simulations...

It's a fine line. I loved the realistic handling/etc of the GT series. I mean, for some of those races, you had to have that perfect line on the corners. 1 second slower could cost you a few seconds later. I don't want something like the older versions of Test Drive, but I don't want to have to be a mechanic either. ;)

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

I know nothing about car's or tuning. But that doesn't keep me from playing and enjoying this game.

Re: Official Video Games Thread V: Collector's Edition

Here's a dumb question for you guys:

I don't play games a ton, but I like sports/racing games, obviously. Also would like to expand into more turn-based strategy games (see: Romance Of The Three Kingdoms series, which I love). Finally, I highly doubt I'd get into the online gaming thing like many of you are into. So, which system do you recommend? PS3, or XBox? And how is the red ring of death these days?

Two tipping points towards the PS3: I could use a new dvd player, and I've always been a Playstation guy.

Re: RROD - They came out with a new version of the 360 in the last year, so not sure that is an issue anymore. Although i have no evidence in either direction. I have the model just before that (elite) and had a regular one prior to that and never had an issue with either of those.

If you have a decent PC you might consider looking at Steam and see if they have a selection of TBS games you would want to play. The upside is that an account is free and most of their games are ridiculously cheap, and you can play on any computer after you buy it.

If you don't care about having an online account then you can pretty much pick either system. I would say the 360 does online integration better overall if that does become important. The pro for PS3 is that they have a free version of their online community.

Ultimately PC is the best choice for turn based strategy games. I can't name that many on PS3 or 360.
