T-minus one day until Crown Royal Cask No. 16 is cracked open.

I know it's not exactly cider "season", but I saw this tonight while shopping for weekend booze and had to try it:

It's brewed with Irish stout yeast and molasses. I think this will either be epic win or epic fail, so naturally I'm hoping for the former. :p

I think that's what I had last time I was home. It was quite good, I thought, but that could just be me.

Tried the Stone Brewery Smoked Porter.

Even this has a good amount of hops in it. It was a 25ozer, and the first pint glass I filled I didn't notice it much, but when I topped 'er off.....you notice it. Given this, I am probably not buying their other ales. I can only imagine how hoppy that is.

Overall, I thought the Porter was decent, would have it again if offered, but that's about it.

Their double IPA, "Ruination", is liquid hop gold.

I like super hoppy beers like Ray Barboni likes lines (1:19 in):

The verdict on the cider: This is some weird shit. Smells sort of like a match head (red phosphorus), and tastes like a flat, amber-colored Baltika with a bit of added molasses, sans the paint thinner and cirrhotic liver undertones. :p

I'd be willing to try their other varieties, but I think I'm out on the "Lansolowne" in the future. Not a drainpour, but not really worth $5/bomber, IMO. Maybe the honey-infused version would be better.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

Went to my usual store on Friday hoping to grab a fifth of Hendricks gin, which I haven't had in quite some time. They were out. :( So Plan B was to case the scotch section, where I decided to pick up some Speyburn 10, mostly because it was only $28/bottle for a single malt, so I figured "Why not?"

It's incredibly decent. This could definitely be a great "budget" scotch for us whisk(e)y aficionados.

For you locals:

Stopped by Haskell's in Plymouth tonight, as lately they've been massively expanding their bomber and craft beer selections.

Found they had the full (or if not full, close to it) line of the New Belgium Lips Of Faith series, and I bought their last Le Fleur, Misseur? beer (I remember liking it when I took the tour).

Yeah, I'm heading back on Saturday to get the rest of the line, along with some of the Goose Island ones (Night Stalker, and Pepe something or other), and also the Odell's Woodcut #4 (which is quite pricey at $25 for a bomber, but was told it was more than worth it; and Odell's has never done me wrong). Might try a couple others the guy at the store recommended. He mentioned some that I have had in the past, and we held the same opinion on most of those beers, so he's got some credibility.

I figure that I can start cracking them around the start of the NFL season (if there is one) or the college hockey season. :)

The haul:

Bought second bottles of the Woodcut (because of the limited availability of it), the Pepe Nero, and the Night Stalker (both of which still develop for up to 5 years; a few have recommended wait until the 1 year range for peak drinkability/taste).

Glenmorangie 10 year - ain't my cup o' scotch. Drinkable, but too sweet/light.

Glad to have read that. It was on sale at the Haskell's I bought the beer at. Was curious, and now I know. (insert GI Joe or NBC joke here).

If I wanted a scotch very similar to this (except slightly better), I'd spend $12 less and get the Speyburn 10 again.

I'll have to keep that in mind. Will probably have one of the Lips Of Faith series tomorrow night, dunno which one. Except the Dunkel, I haven't had the others that I bought. Will report back. The Dunkel I rate higher than Schell's winter 2011 winter offering and Spaten's, but lower than Franziskaner's (rounding out my top 4). The rest of the LoF? Probably will have one per weekend, to savor the supply (and hopefully like them).

Been very impressed with the Deschuttes line that was recently expanded here, as well as Rush River and Stone. Also picked up a SA Latitude variety pack and a Sierra Nevada camper variety pack that I have not yet tried.

Deschutte's is awesome.

Went with the Widmer Brothers' Brrrbon tonight. Decent ale (which is aged in bourbon barrels). While it doesn't exactly set itself apart from similarly-aged beers, it was quite good. At about $8/bomber, it's definitely worth the price, and actually probably a bargain (could see it go for about $10-11).

Had a KBC Amber earlier, because my dad still had some left (went to 'rents for Mom's Day Dinner), and intro'd him to Orkney Skull Splitter (scotch ale). He liked it. A lot. I think I'm finally getting through to him about beers (he used to be one of those "beer is beer" guys and buy Miller High Life, or whatever was cheapest that he had heard of). He loves the darker beers mostly (was astounded at the Leinie's Big Eddie Russian Imperial), and is hooked on New Belgium beers, Spotted Cow, and KBC Nut Brown Ale.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: I'm Having A 6-Pack Attack!: Part The Sixth

Where'd you pick up the Orkney?

Will be heading to Grand Rapids in a few weeks - will be interesting to see what Gary's warehouse has to offer that I haven't seen before.
