Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Tonight's beer is New Holland Oatmeal Stout. First time I've had New Holland beer, and I like it. And I'm thankful that New Holland Brewing is only a short drive away.

I'm also happy that my hometown will have a few breweries of its own soon. There's one going in downtown and it's only a short walk away...

Just mixed Founder's Rubaeus with Founder's Breakfast Stout. This. Is. Amazing.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

I picked up a 6-pack of Rocky's Revenge by Tyranena Brewing out of WI... Sat down with some for the Hawks/Blues game tonight... It's "an American Brown Ale aged in bourbon barrels"... For as much as everyone here seems to like the bourbon barrel aged beers, I must say that this leaves a lot on the table for me... It's just a run of the mill brown ale to me... Nothing is really standing out

I completely agree. A friend gave me a sixer for my bday. I wasn't impressed.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

There are some barrel-aged beers where you can definitely taste the barrel. Others seem to be hopping on the bandwagon, so I expect there to be plenty of mediocre ones out by now.

I'd also think the barrel used probably makes a difference. If a brewery is sourcing their barrels from one of the conglomerates, I'd have to assume they're getting the readily-available barrels that Heaven Hill or JB uses to bang out watery swill like Ten High, Evan Williams, and Beam White.

EDIT: Also, how long the brewer is willing to wait. It takes time for the trace bourbon locked in the wood to mingle with the beer added to the barrel.

Some of us (bbdl, MNS, PaintedBandit, and I) noticed that the HammerHeart Brewery in MN uses Buffalo Trace barrels for their offerings. And hoo-boy, you can taste it, and it's awesome.

Tyranena is just average at best in all their brews. I used to drink them a bit when they first came out (about 15 years ago?) but so many other, better breweries have come along - including local micros - that I skip Tyranena altogether now.

That and I just don't drink a lot of beer anymore. Just too **** filling and too slow to feel anything.

Mostly booze now.

I will say it's decent. But like you said, so many others are better at that "level" of beer...Tyranena has become an afterthought to me.

So awesome, I would highly reccomended that HammerHeart by anyone visiting the Lino Lakes area. I could really go for Dublin Raid and Olaf the Stout, both aged in barrels

Beat me to it. My sentiments exactly.

Having a Bourbon Barrel Aged Quad, from Boulevard Brewing to celebrate the start of the college hockey season! Its, ummm, really **** good.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

The Scotch was/is Glen Elgin 22 year.

Very smooth.

This was laid down while I was in college, half of my lifetime ago.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Had Perrin Brewery's IPA tonight. IPA is now my second favorite style of beer, just behind stouts and ahead of brown ales.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Vodka tonight; too much vodka.

Ugly Dog Vodka from Chelsea, MI. Pretty *ing good, compared to the Grand Traverse "True North" Vokda, which is sweeter in comparison, and also costs $10 more per bottle.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Bell's Kalamazoo Stout; not as good as New Holland's Oatmeal Stout or Founder's Breakfast Stout, but it's alright.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Had a couple 7&7's tonight. Only had 1 can of Sprite....but I have a ton of Coke. So I was going to have a ______ and Coke, except I realized that the only thing I have that mixes with Coke/That I would mix with Coke is Wild Turkey 101.

Wild Turkey and Cokes it is!

I really need to pick up some cheap mixing bourbon, that isn't Turkey, some Evan Williams is in order next time I'm at the Booze Boutique.
