On the advice of a friend (BrenthovenFanClub, actually; have known the guy for 20~ years), I bought a bottle of Surly SeVIIN. Planned on drinking it during our FFL draft in a couple weeks. Then saw the ABV (12.5%). Yeah, not gonna happen. I have to drive. Am anxious to try it, though, as the only Surly I've had is the Bender, as I know they are a hoppier brewery.

It's National Rum Day.

In honor, I may just see how many of my 15 or so varieties I can get through.

Joined up with bbdl/PBS/MNS/couple others yesterday at HammerHeart Brewing in Lino Lakes. Tiny place, just opened up a couple weeks ago.

You walk in, there are antlers everywhere, it's all wood, and the music sounds like Norwegian Death Metal. All the workers look like Sons Of Anarchy rejects. Then you try the beers. Awesomeness. bbdl ended up buying a growler of Olaf The Stout for $30 (it's worth it) for later on. That beer...it's like a freight train to the face, but in every good way possible.

It's an interesting place, and I definitely will be going back there sometime.

We did a brewery-hop in the Twin Cities. Started at Fulton, then Indeed, Pour Decisions and last was Hammerheart.

Fulton was good, I seem to like their beers. Indeed was good as well, but the consensus was that it was too hoppy overall. Pour Decisions was disappointing, but I think that was because I didn't like the beer I chose, while the others I tried sips of tasted really good. I only could have 1 since I was DD. Hammerheart was incredibly awesome. If Sons of Anarchy and Game of Thrones got together and started a microbrewery, it would be Hammerheart.

The best beer that Hammerheart made, that Brent didn't mention was the "Bourbon Barrel Aged Dublin Raid Peated Irish Red Ale" And it might have been the best beer I have ever tasted, ever. Many, many layers of flavor. Little bit of hops, some malt, a taste of bourbon, and a Islay Scotch smoky flavor to finish it off. Just incredible. They also had Surtr's Flame, which is a smoked IPA, that I just got a small sample of. I thought it was excellent, hoppy like an IPA but not overly hoppy, and light smoky flavor that compliments it well. I also tried a sip of the blonde and a pale ale that they had, I was very impressed with those as well. Definitely highly recommend this place.

Depending on style, "too hoppy" might be nonsense. ;)

Pour Decisions is an excellent name for a brewery; best I've heard in awhile.

The black ale that many of us tried, looked like Widowmaker, sounded like Widowmaker, but tasted like an IPA. Yeah....

Due to massive OT these past few weeks, I decided to treat myself to a bottle of Laphroaig Triple Wood. I would've gotten a more-aged bottle of some Islay, but still waiting on which team Kluwe ends up on, so I can buy a jersey. ;)

Sounds like it was mislabeled. There is this new trendy style called a 'black IPA', which may better fit that brew.

Big House Bourbon - did I plug this before? Not bad for $20, if you don't mind a high-rye bourbon.

Founder's Centennial isn't as good as their Dirty B-stard. Also, the Irish bar I frequent has their own stout; has a very dark flavor that I like.

Summit Unchained Another IPA. Very solid English-style, but hoppier than most imho.

Surlyfest - perhaps my favorite 'subtle' Surly offering.

The Breakfast Stout is their best. By far.

IF you get lucky, and you will have to hit up stores to get on waiting lists, etc etc, the Kentucky Breakfast Stout (the BS aged in bourbon barrels for a year, my local store's limit was ONE 12oz bottle) is all the awesome.
