Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Pendleton Canadian Whisky. It's distilled in Canada, and bottled in Oregon. The reviews from range from average to favorable, but those who like it really like it. It's not too expensive either, $20 a bottle. $40 for a handle.

This and ginger ale has been my summer drink.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Had a New Belgium Biere de Garde (Lips of Faith) and a Brasserie Dieu Du Ciel Equinoxe du Printemps tonight. Both were excellent.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Lagunitas Censored Ale. I think this one is pretty underrated and a great sipper for this time of year.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Thinking of buying some whiskey this weekend, but I'm not sure which kind I want. I really want something that's good on its own and doesn't need to be mixed.

You can get a 1.75L of it at Morelli's through today for $46.

Thinking of buying some whiskey this weekend, but I'm not sure which kind I want. I really want something that's good on its own and doesn't need to be mixed.

I wish I knew how to answer that.

Start out with the most general questions:

1. Do you like:
A. Sweet and smokey
B. Earthy
C. Light and gentle on the palette

2A. Do you like:
A. A stronger smokey flavor that tends to be more abrasive. Booker's Bourbon
B. A more gentle flavor that has more fruity and vanilla notes. Elijah Craig 18
C. Something with a bit of both Woodford Reserve
Other notes:
A. I would recommend Gentleman Jack for something similar to bourbon but with a slightly different flavor.
B. I would recommend Knob Creek for an intro to Rye. Very tasty.

2B. Do you like:
A. A very strong peaty smoke flavor. Laphroaig Single Malt Scotch 12-year
B. A more gentle flavor that has more fruity and vanilla notes. Macallan Single Malt Scotch 12-year
C. Something with a bit of both. Glenlivet Single Malt Scotch 12-year

2C. You're on your own here.
A. I would recommend either a Crown Royal or Crown Royal Black for an introduction to Canadian whisky
B. I would recommend Jameson as an intro to Irish whiskey
Neither are the best of breed by any measure, but they will work just fine.

General:
I would highly recommend against anything that comes in a 1.5 L bottle. Exceptions exist. But very few.
I would sort of recommend against anything that costs less than $25 a bottle (750 mL). There are some exceptions though and some can be very good.
I would recommend against moonshine unless you've gotten used to the high alcohol content of whisk(e)y.
If you buy something for mixing, make sure it's appropriately matched to the flavors of the drink and appropriately priced. Don't buy a $50 bottle to mix a Manhattan or Rob Roy.
Experiment and figure out which you like the most.

Addendum to dx's post: don't buy anything in a plastic bottle. :D

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Had some Great River Brewery Dirty Chocolate Blonde last night (blonde ale w/choc syrup and cocoa nibs) last night, and am planning on having Indeed Brewing Shenanigans (summer ale brewed w/honey) tonight. Interestingly, both are canned beers (from the Quad Cities, and Minneapolis, respectively).

I don't get 'smokey' out of Booker's. In fact, I rarely get smokey out of any bourbon; that's a flavor I usually reserve for the Islay scotches. Booker's is, however, ridiculously smooth for a 120 proof liquor.

My advice to Bob depends more on price.

Under $30, your best bets are Maker's Mark or Bulleit. Under $40, I'd go with Elmer T. Lee, Maker's 46, or Four Roses Small Batch Blend. If money's no object, you can't go wrong with Woodford Double Oaked, Four Roses Single Barrel (my personal #1), or Blanton's.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

I have to say, and believe me, this is nothing personal, but Blanton's was the most disappointing bourbon I have ever bought. I can't quite put my finger on it. But it was definitely not for me.

Double Oaked is far and away my favorite. Also, when I say, smokey, I mean in relative terms. An Elijah Craig 18 has very little discernible smoke flavor. It's more of the lighter fruit and vanilla flavors. I can definitely pick out the smoke flavor in most bourbons. An Islay is certainly an in your face scotch. For me, they are on the verge of being too smokey. I might be more sensitive to smoke flavors. Part of why I think experimentation is key. A person really needs to calibrate their palette to a number of different whiskeys to determine what profile they like. It's no different than beer or wine. :)

For me that was Col. E.H. Taylor. May as well have just lit $70 on fire.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

Get an Islay, Lagavulin 16 would be my recommendation. Its the only whiskey you really need. ;)

My bartop consists of: Caol Ila 12 (Islay Single Malt Scotch), Lagavulin 16 (Islay Single Malt Scotch), Bowmore 12 (Islay Single Malt Scotch), Bunnahabhain 12 (Islay Single Malt Scotch), Glengoyne 17 (Highland Single Malt Scotch), Auchentoshan 18 (Lowland Single Malt Scotch), Woodford Reserve Double Oaked (Bourbon), Elmer T. Lee (Bourbon), Basil Hayden's (Bourbon), Reyka (Vodka), Cabo Wabo Anejo (Tequila)

(I only allow corked bottles on my bar)

Words of wisdom from a bartender: "f it weren't for life, work, responsibilities — having to pay bills and watch the kids and go clothes shopping and go grocery shopping and drive from Point A to Point B — pretty much everyone would just opt to be drunk all the time."

Amen, brother.

If I'm to drop $30+ on a bottle of whiskey, I prefer a strong, smoky flavor.

Re: Official Drinking Thread: 7&7s for Everyone!

bought some sortilege at the Canadian duty free in Montreal... maple whiskey. An employee offered a taste... pretty good.

I'll tell you what though, the EC18 was only recently unseated as my favorite whiskey. It was the least smokey of the entire bunch. Which isn't to say it isn't flavorful. It is. It's a very different flavor and well worth every penny. It's far easier to drink in warmer weather than something like a Booker's or even a Woodford Reserve for that matter.
