Re: Official Boston University 2009-2010 Pre-season thread - Let the banners rise!
First of all, the ceremony was nice, quick, some awkward silences at times. Good crowd, great touch to have the parents of the last year's players pull down the banners. Did anyone else think the band sounded substantially sharper and better tonight?
U18's looked pretty fast. I liked how when the U18 lineups were announced, everyone actually cheered for Clandening and Nieto. Nieto definitely looked like a promising talent - played the penalty kill, was confident with the puck. Seems like a very smart player. He's got a rocket for a shot as well. As for Clandening, I honestly don't remember much from him...
Overall the team looked PRETTY sloppy gaining the zone. Guys getting caught at center ice, too many stray pucks. They made the u18 'tender, Campbell (UMich Commit), look good by once again, shooting incessantly at center mass. He had to make a few nice saves, but overall, they were routine.
good games:
Gryba - was able to work the boards well, and pass out to the break, played physical and sharp as usual.
CrisCo - awesome hustle, great efficient forecheck, caused a few problems..
Kraus - he made a few big saves, stopped a breakaway as well. I'm sure his confidence has grown, good for him. (He also got new pads? I like their design, but again, let's hope they don't stay too clean for much longer).
Bonino - he was really using his size and ability to hold the puck as his best assets tonight. He was shedding and shielding like another day in the office.
not the best we've seen:
shatty - just didn't seem like he was all there tonight. lost possession of the puck a few times, from what I recall. Just mishandled them. It almost seemed like he was trying to do too much.
trivino - he was completely invisible tonight.
notes about freshmen:
Escobedo - he got caught wrong-footed when closing gaps a couple of times, i think in successive shifts, but overall, he skated well controlling the break out. seemed a little more poised at the back...
Santana - my previous post about my observation of him mentioned that he seemed tentative with the puck. from what i saw tonight, he proved me wrong with the 3 consecutive cutbacks and power turns he made on the puck right in front of 118. That was pretty cool.
Chiasson - aggressive. i like it. got called for slash on his first shift (chopped the opposing player's stick). he also got a penalty for an elbow to the head (which i thought was a monster, legit hit).
Rosen, Nicastro, Megan, Courtnall - honestly don't remember too much worth mentioning from them.
