Official Boston University 2009-2010 Pre-season thread - Let the banners rise!

Re: Official Boston University 2009-2010 Pre-season thread - Let the banners rise!

Biggest pieces of news for those who don't feel like reading the transcript:

-Parker felt that Gaudet had won the 4th-line center spot, but then Gaudet dislocated his shoulder in practice on Thursday. He's out for "a couple weeks".

-That means either Gilroy or Santana will be the 4th-line center. Parker said both would probably be in the lineup, and was extremely pleased with Santana's play. "I thought Santana played very well. It was the first time we’ve seen him as a center. We moved him to center, and he played very well on the fourth line for the second half of the game."

-Parker has also been very happy with Glass' play. “The guy that’s been very surprising to me with his offensive opportunities and how he’s been able to create on his own is Andrew Glass. He’s played very well, and he’s made some nice plays.”

-Also had a lot of very good things to say about Pereira. In a related story, Pereira might be the best interview on this team. Very comical.

“I thought it was really weird when they introduced the USA team and it was, “Who cares,” and they’re booing everybody. Then all of a sudden, they get to [Matt] Nieto –– “Yay.” And they get to Adam [Clendening], and they give him a cheer, but everyone else gets a boo. Already, they’re Terriers."

We're such a smart fan section!

Thought we looked a lot better tonight but I'm still worried about our ability to finish the plays that we so frequently finished last year. The biggest problem I've seen in these first two games is that shots on goal are not becoming goals, it'd be really nice if we could direct some pucks NOT at the goalie's chest.

Using our huge benefits in score making opportunities and time of possession can quickly become a huge problem. I feel like we controlled the puck for most of the night but when we finally created a scoring opportunity we wiffed or missed.

KGliroy for 4th line center.

Joey P: Sooo improved, excited to see what he does this year.

Warso: Was an absolute beast, had a couple of brilliant moments.

Rosen: I like this guy, smart play, good movement.

Nicastro: Got beat back skating defensively twice, not sure what's going on there.

Kraus: Looked much better this game, seems to be gaining confidence.

That happens a lot with freshman defensemen. The speed of the college game is just so much quicker than what they've faced before. And yes, this wasn't against a college team, but the U-18 team is still pretty fast. If you watch video of Shattenkirk as a freshman, you wouldn't even think you're watching the same player you see now because of how often players blew by him.

Additionally, I think two of the times Nicastro got beat were by Bryan Rust, who's one of the fastest skaters I've seen in a while. He looked faster than anyone on BU as far as I'm concerned. What a recruiting win for Notre Dame.

Re: Official Boston University 2009-2010 Pre-season thread - Let the banners rise!

I had fun. :) Though I had a momentary freak out when I saw the banners on the other side of the scoreboard and I'm thinking "is only half the arena going to be able to see them??? That's not right!!" But it all turned out OK. I liked how they did it. And it took me a few minutes to figure out what the 5th banner was for.

The poster was not the "epic poster" but still pretty sweet. And apparently they only printed enough for 10%of the people, unless people took 10 or more each. A lot of the parents didn't get one.

As for the team, I thought they looked pretty good. Out of all the frosh, the one that stood out the most for me was Nicastro. The USA goalie made some amazing saves. I was shocked when he wasn't listed as one of the 3 stars. Has he committed yet? Who were the student fans yelling the sucks chant to? The dueling "Name, name, name, YOU SUCK!" chant? And why?

Seems reasonable, come to think about it I don't remember him getting beat at all last week, and he looked fine besides that.

I'm convinced, back on the Nicastro bandwagon!

Campbell is committed to Michigan.

That chant was for Bill Arnold, who is committed to BC. BTW - Dog Pound, well done on that. That was one of my favorites in a while.

No problemo... it was so much fun, and for once.. completely unplanned!

Since it was so awesome, though, look for a form of it to become a regular thing for the rest of the season.

Also the front page picture on USCHO right now further confirms that Melissa Wade is full of win.

Lots of shots and few goals...signs of our only potential weakness this year coming true? Me hopes not, but fears many 3-2 games early on.

Just out of curiosity, where were John McCarthy's parents last night? Not that it's any of my business.

i wondered the same thing. it would've been nice to have both captains' parents unveil the championship banner together. a nice ceremony, although it would've been nice to have the parents bring out the trophies instead of anti-climactic agganis employees.

funniest part of the night for me was when arnold tripped and fell on a puck in the warmups and stood up with an "oh crap, im gonna get it now" look on his face/

I fear this year will feature the return of the 0-0 tie.

That wasn't part of the ceremony and I can understand why you don't want to add the potential for something bad happening by having the parents walking out and having to carry something.

I thought it was much funnier when half the fans were yelling suck at Nieto and half were cheering him :-).

A lot of things could have been better but it was nice. Not overly long but still showing the importance of all that was accomplished.

Oh that was great. He didn't just fall on a puck, he fell on a puck into the net and knocked it off its moorings. I saw it and laughed but didn't realize till people kept cheering that it was Arnold. The back and forth Arnold, you suck! cheers near the end of the second period were pretty funny.

no way. sure, it's not 08-09 anymore, but it certainly isn't 06-07 either.

anyone have a screenshot of the poster they gave out last night? wasn't able to get one

Possibly, but don't forget how last year began. The big reason we started with some 5 goal efforts against North Dakota and Merrimack was poor goaltending in those games in my opinion. Against MSU and UNH, we were stumped. The connections weren't getting there, the team didn't have chemistry yet. They started the year with a pretty big 0-fer on the PP, something like 0-19. And then against Michigan, something clicked, and the offense went on its tear. I'm expecting a slow start for this team give the amount of new and expanded roles for several guys, but they have talent and hopefully good leadership, so it won't take long for them to harness potential.

My biggest concerns for the early season are on the penalty kill. There are several forwards I'm comfortable with playing here, notably Bonino, Connolly, Popko, Zach Cohen, and even Joe Pereira (although he's often unable to participate in PKs ). But with the losses of Gilroy and Strait, increased pressure will be put on offensively oriented guys and freshmen to play fundamental shutdown roles, and that will be an adjustment for some of them.

The National Championship banners looks quite wrinkled. $26 a ticket and they can't afford an iron? :)

hmmm. it clearly reads "all" fans. what piece of chit kind of athletic department would advertise this, then not have something set up to make sure "all fans" get a poster?!?!?

do the bruins have a table in north station with bobbleheads to pick up on bobblehead night??

They hid a bunch of extras upstairs in the Guest Services booth, I had to ask them to get one. It was ridiculous. Of course, I did see several people take more than 4 when they were set out on tables. That will dent the supply more quickly. Can't replace the handing out one-by-one method it seems. Of course, that only works with a slow steady flow of people such as when they arrive, and doing it then for posters means lots of wrinkled posters by the end of the game.

No easy way to do it except print tons of extras.
