When the NRA said the ATF and FBI are jack-booted thugs?

I'd rather people didn't eat the processed crap for sale at McDonald's.

are you being a hypocrite here?

Re: Obama XXIII: The Muslin Anti-Christ Wages War on the forces of Christianity!

The NRA's just another business group, I wouldn't expect them to do anything but pressure for gun companies. I also wouldn't believe anything they said, ever. It's like listening to media conglomerates talk about SOPA/PIPA.

When they peddle political conspiracies, it's to drive their business strategies, nothing more.

In the words of Cheryl Wheeler (in her song, "If It Were Up To Me")...

Maybe it's the movies, maybe it's the books

Maybe it's the bullets, maybe it's the real crooks

Maybe it's the drugs, maybe it's the parents

Maybe it's the colors everybody's wearin'

Maybe it's the president, maybe it's the last one

Maybe it's the one before that, what he done

Maybe it's the high schools, maybe it's the teachers

Maybe it's the tattooed children in the bleachers

Maybe it's the Bible, maybe it's the lack

Maybe it's the music, maybe it's the crack

Maybe it's the hairdos, maybe it's the TV

Maybe it's the cigarettes, maybe it's the family

Maybe it's the fast food, maybe it's the news

Maybe El Nino, or UV rays

Maybe it's the army, maybe it's the liquor

Maybe it's the papers, maybe the militia

Maybe it's the athletes, maybe it's the ads

Maybe it's the sports fans, maybe it's a fad

Maybe it's the magazines, maybe it's the Internet

Maybe it's the lottery, maybe it's the immigrants

Maybe it's taxes, big business

Maybe it's the KKK and the skinheads

Maybe it's the communists, maybe it's the Catholics

Maybe it's the clearcut, maybe it's the ozone

Maybe it's the chemicals, maybe it's the car phone

Maybe it's the fertilizer, maybe it's the nose rings

Maybe it's the end, but I know one thing.

If it were up to me, I'd take away the guns.

saying you'd rather that people not eat McDonalds or other processed foods, but I don't think you are exactly the poster child for healthy eating habits.

Re: Obama XXIII: The Muslin Anti-Christ Wages War on the forces of Christianity!

the gun people have done a great job positioning this matter, if you suggest any type of modification you are A) suggesting the elimination of the entire constitution B) helping gun toting bad guys take over the entire country (because right now the only reason they haven't yet is the private gun owners).

They can outlaw the sale of prohibited baby strollers or cribs...why not public sale of assault weapons? Gun stores, private sale and gun collector shows too (or whatever that loophole is called).

Do they already exist in the US, yes. Could they be shipped in illegally, yes.

Is that really the rationale we use when making new laws on safety...if it already exists here (why would be want a law if it didn't) and it could be shipped in illegally, then we just shrug and continue to allow the legal production and sale of new items?

Seems not to be the case with cars and seatbelts, homes with smoke detectors and a hundred other items but in this one instance, unless the change would eliminate all existing inventory, and ensure nobody was ever the victim of gun violence again, we shouldn't make the effort.

Anybody that can find the clip: There is the old All In The Family scene where Archie and Gloria talk about hand guns and she laments the number of people killed in that manner...Archie responds "Would you feel any better if they all got pushed out of windows?" It is a funny line, in 1974, I just didnt' think that summed up our current policy in the US.

I suspect Zimmerman would have had a tougher time pushing the young man out of a window.

I used to eat at McDonald's and other fast food venues on a regular basis, but since the surgery I've stayed away from that crap.

Re: Obama XXIII: The Muslin Anti-Christ Wages War on the forces of Christianity!

The gun people would argue that baby strollers, cribs, cars, seatbelts, smoke detectors, and windows are not explicitly mentioned in the Constitution.

I don't know anybody who wants his neighbors to have a Howitzer. The all guns / no guns argument is a false dichotomy; we need to find a public consensus of where the dividing line on the spectrum of weapons is, and I think that line varies depending on whether you live in the city or the country.

What do you have against Howitzers? Communist!

Personally, I am glad my right to own a nuclear arsenal is protected by the Constitution.

You obviously missed the stories in the Boston paper(s) last summer about baby Brady sans diapers.

Who says bipartisanship is dead in Washington? House Republicans played the dastardly trick of putting President Obama's budget proposal to a floor vote on Wednesday, and the verdict was a unanimous defeat—414-0. Fifteen Democrats did the White House the favor of not voting on the measure that would raise taxes by $1.9 trillion.

Re: Obama XXIII: The Muslin Anti-Christ Wages War on the forces of Christianity!

Are you just trying to score points or do you not understand what's behind this?

I put forward a serious budget proposal that has some unpopular things in it.

You have the majority and so are assured it won't pass.

So you put my budget up for a vote in order to get people you are trying to defeat in the Fall on record for supporting the unpopular things, without ever having to swallow any compromises yourself.

Crow all you want, but that's the game your GOP was playing Wednesday.

And it's why (with Health Care at the forefront) we are going bankrupt.

Re: Obama XXIII: The Muslin Anti-Christ Wages War on the forces of Christianity!

And all we have to do is look in the mirror.

If the public were not so easily led around by the nose, then when one party pulled crap like this the other one could vote for their budget straight up. Then when the first party tried to make hay on it in the Fall, the voters would roll their eyes, or even better, punish the manipulative party for not being willing to compromise or documenting the hard choices they would make.

But as it stands, there are so many "low information voters" that politics becomes a game of who can appeal to the lowest common denominator in the electorate. Any time anybody makes even an attempt at a reasonable suggestion, the other immediately retreats back over the line and screams, "look at the ghastly things the other side wants to do!!!" Then when pressed for their own proposal they airily talk about "eliminating waste" and "cutting pork." Funny they never tell the voters what that means, though.

Don't blame the politicians. They're just following our lead. The problem is us.

That's funny, it sure looked like a campaign document.....

Crow all you want...

What a strange choice of word, there...."crow." It really trivializes the situation, and it reveals how superficial some people are (not you necessarily, moreso the mindset that is so widespread such that this word choice seemed appropriate to you in the first place). Why are some people so myopically focused in regarding our situation primarily as a political contest for partisan advantage?

We live in difficult times and Harry Reid won't even bring a budget to a vote for 1,095 days and counting, and you are saying, what, exactly? That the Democrats shouldn't be forced to vote on anything substantial because it will make it more difficult for them to get re-elected?

At one time, politics meant people stood for something substantial and you asked for people to vote for you based on what you stood for. Now you ask for people to vote for you so that you can bring home money from Washington to your district? Vote for me because the other guy is even worse?

There is something seriously wrong with our situation, and you use the word "crow" when someone points out a symptom of the problem: that few people are willing to take a forthright stand for anything meaningful?

Yeah. Why are "some people"...?

You posted a BS talking point and you got called on it. If you want to talk seriously, great. But don't play those games and then raise your skirt and shriek. "And why behold you the speck that is in your brother's eye, but consider not the beam that is in your own eye?"

Re: Obama XXIII: The Muslin Anti-Christ Wages War on the forces of Christianity!

If you want to talk seriously, great.

Obama has not presented a credible budget in several years. The last time the Senate voted on a budget presented by Obama, it was voted down 96 - 0. The Senate has not even voted on any budget over two years since. Now Obama presents another budget that is voted down by the House 414 - 0.

and your response is "well government is hard?" how is that serious? To me it is extremely serious when our so-called "leaders" in the Senate won't even bring a budget forward for a vote in over two years and when our President won't even present a budget that will garner at least one vote from his own party in the House of Representatives.

C'mon man, get real. People every day have big blowout fights with their spouses over household budgets, and yet they find a way to work it out*; yet the Senate and the President won't even engage in a conversation about it because they are concerned that the Republicans are trying to embarrass them in front of the voters?

Suppose what you say is true, and the Republicans are trying to force a vote on a budget so that the Democrats have to run against their own record? So what? Why is that a big deal? What is it that the Democrats are trying to avoid? It sounds to me like they are saying something like "vote for me even though I won't even let you know where I really stand on budgetary matters because the other guy is trying to make me look bad." Nice message they are sending to the voters instead of a vote on a budget! Wow, that will really show up those nefarious Republicans, won't it.

Now, how "serious" a response is that from the Democrats here? I'm no fan of the Republicans, but in a contest between a raging anal sphincter and an undependable sociopath I'll very, very reluctantly side with the raging anal sphincter, holding my nose the whole time.

What I REALLY want is some credible counter-offer from BHO and the Senate. That would be a "serious" response from them. Instead they come across as "do whatever we need to do to get past the next election and then we'll do whatever the heII we feel like after that." and that seriously troubles me.

PS I'd like to find video of the ad they ran about Ryan's previous budget. Someone actually hired a Paul Ryan look-alike to push an elderly lady in a wheelchair over a cliff. Nice constructive counter-proposal there, eh?

* even people who are getting divorced because they can't agree on a budget hire lawyers to negotiate a budget for them! The absence of a Federal budget is beyond absurd, it is downright shameful.

What's wrong with putting a bill to a vote? Isn't that what Congress is supposed to do? We aren't paying them to sit around and argue with each other.
