Obama XX: Maybe We'll Even Talk About Obama

Re: Obama XX: Maybe We'll Even Talk About Obama

So...? Why shouldn't the rule be there? It's BYU's right to have such a rule. Just as it would have been the kids right to pick a different school to play basketball for. He didn't, and he now he gets to bear the consequences.

My brother allllmost went to BYU on a volleyball scholly, but ended up choosing Pepperdine instead. One of the determining factors was indeed BYU's code of conduct. It's no secret BYU doesn't play around when it comes to violations thereof. Don't like it...don't go there. Simple as that.

Re: Obama XX: Maybe We'll Even Talk About Obama

I doubt you can have rules that touch on protected categories like race any more.

As for why anybody would want to attend, I take it you don't live in the southwest. Mormonism is huge in Utah-Arizona-SoCal. Growing up in the east I thought it was a fringe cult, but it's the religion of choice of the local chamber of commerce in most SW towns. They're the western tanned version of well-scrubbed east coast Episcopalians -- come for the Jesus, stay for the business networking. I strongly suspect the vast majority of kids at BYU buy it all hook, line and sinker.

On the other hand, there is nothing on this earth wilder than a lapsed Mormon girl.

You must have thought it was Christmas morning when you first heard about this case. Freddy is protected by the First Amendment, as is Bob Jones and the LDS Church.

Speaking of BJU, you'll recall Bush was pummeled by libs for making a speech there. Subsequently, Al Gore and Bill Bradley appeared at a panderfest at the Apollo Theatre sponsored by (wait for it) Al Sharpton. Crickets from the left, naturally. Tawana Brawley approved.

Re: Obama XX: Maybe We'll Even Talk About Obama

This all makes me want to go with some friends to around BYU campus and be drunk/lewd/crass/everything else I've been accused of being, just to see the horrified looks on their faces. Even better if we could import some strippers from Vegas to party it up with us. I may never be allowed in the state of Utah again, and I'd be perfectly OK with that.

Re: Obama XX: Maybe We'll Even Talk About Obama

WWM, I'm curious how you'd feel if the rule broken had been one prohibiting inter-racial dating

Yeah, that would cross the line my mind. But this is nowhere close to that.

As for why someone would want to attend there, it's actually pretty darn good academically, a top school in terms of value, all that stuff. Plus there are people who really believe in the teachings, and as such want to be around other people who do as well. Not that much different from someone who's had a conservative/liberal upbringing choosing to go to a conservative/liberal college. (Delete as appropriate). It's hardly unheard of.

I don't know if you've seen their TV ads, but they actually tout being the soberest campus as a selling point.

Also, I don't know what you mean there aren't any palm trees in Madison:

I'm old and married, so I'm gonna trust you on that one. Having read Krakauer's book on the subject, I readily admit to being creeped out by all things Mormon.

As to Walrus, I should have known I couldn't direct a question to WWM without you crawling up my arse. You must like it up there.

Re: Obama XX: Maybe We'll Even Talk About Obama

That is akin to bragging about being the nerdiest 35 year old virgin.

To many, many people yes. But the point is, they make no bones about saying, "Hey, we're a strict Mormon campus" and there are actually a bunch of people who want to live that way, so more power to them.

I think Pat Forde nails it.

Nice, got nothing in response I see

I know you're trying to pick a fight here and ordinarily I'd oblige, but I have no idea what you're on about. Could you spell out your outrage for those of us who are a little slow this morning? (I would put the confused emoticon but I don't know the code, and why did they take the little doohickeys away anyway? -- they were useful)

Edit: this one maybe? :-/

Edit2: nope. Those are the yahoo emoticons. This one? O.o

Edit3: Hmph. I give up.

Edit4: Winning! (Duh.)

Years ago, before we had kids, the wife and I decided to go to visit her mother and stepfather, brother etc in Utah, they had moved there a year ealier for employment.

First thing we did was go to the local target. I got a case of beer, carton of cigs and a large can of coffee and loaded it onto the checkout. The cashier lady was in fact mortified and had a look of disbelief on her face. My wifes stepfather chimed in, "he shouldn't be buying all that should he", and she repsonded with "no he should not!"

I got a huge kick out of that and told her to just ring me up and I would deal with the consequences. :D

Re: Obama XX: Maybe We'll Even Talk About Obama

This is ridiculous.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has issued a letter instructing state police to release the names of authorized gun owners in Illinois to the press, the Associated Press is reporting. State police had initially denied the AP's request for a list of Illinois residents with a Firearm Owners Identification card on the grounds that disclosing the names would violate the privacy of gun owners. The wire service explains that police officials have not indicated whether they will comply with Madigan's ruling, and that there are currently Republican-sponsored bills in the Illinois House and Senate that would prohibit disclosing this kind of information.

I support them in this too, but that's such a lazy column to write, right down to the affected cadence of the language.

Here is a different take on the matter from an alum.

To understand what happened to Davies, you have to understand the purpose of sports at BYU. They're a missionary tool. I think there are certain people in the administration who want to kill athletics altogether. After the 2004 gang rape case, there was talk of doing just that among the Quorum of the Twelve (the church's governing body). It hurt the ministry. That's why they make these guys shave and cover up their tattoos. Michael Loyd Jr. last year had a pretty good tournament run. He's a pretty decent player. But he had this little mohawk, and that's one of the reasons he was forced out of the school. (It came out later that he'd gotten popped for underage drinking.) Despite what Jim Rome and Pat Forde might think, the school wasn't making any kind of serious sacrifice here. This kind of politicking is so much more valuable than a Final Four run. BYU can say: "'Look at us. We're not like the rest of the world. We're not like other universities. We stand by our principles." It's all a part of spreading the faith, and Brandon Davies is being used to that end just like a kid at Kentucky is being used to win basketball games.

It is in fact very difficult to separate what Mormon institutions do from their evangelical mission. It's almost impossible for easterners to appreciate just how all-consuming it is. Some people are creeped out by that -- personally I've always found it a positive that at least one group of people has escaped the loathsome, superficial irony of modernity. It is sincere. But don't for a moment think it's not also calculated.

Assuming this is a serious question, when you click on "reply", then click on "go advanced". All the emoticons are to the right of the window where you type in the text.

I just don't trust them, at all. They're up to something, why else would they have commercials and billboards basically saying "I'm awesome! and I'm Mormon" (not sure if others have seen them, but there hs been a billboard on my way home from work for about 6 months and I hear the commercials on the radio regularly). Plus any group of people, my mom included, that tell me its wrong to drink and have relations with random attractive females is immediately at odds with me.

The only time I've ever been really creeped out by Mormonism (other than the whole genesis of it as a scam of course -- that's not the Believers' fault, and probably a lot of other religions have started out like that) was driving through Utah and listening to a children's radio program where the message to girls was "end your friendships with non-Mormon boys because you can't ever marry them and that's the only reason you'd be associating with them." That was creepy and wrong on about five levels simultaneously.

But generally speaking, my main reaction to Mormonism in the west was their kids were always well-behaved in restaurants, and that end pretty much justifies any means.

Huh, that's an interesting take. Still, if we are to have double standards (and I guess we shouldn't really), isn't that the type of double standard we want to have?
If so, then I think Forde's point still holds. In the same week people are working themselves into a tizzy about the CBS/SI "investigation", shouldn't we be happy that athletes (probably the most notable representatives of many universities) are held to higher standard?

Sure, I'm fine with it. Essentially they signed a contract and both sides have to honor it.

Like say Wisconsin teachers... ;)
