But it also doesn't make them wrong. There's a difference between "I don't like that rule" and "They shouldn't have that rule". So again, why shouldn't they have that rule?

Absolutely. They're not wrong, the player is wrong. And I of course am laughing hysterically at any one person who attends a college with rules that might have applied in the 18th century.

Re: Obama XX: Maybe We'll Even Talk About Obama

You think those rules are bad? Google Bob Jones University. Holy crap.

By BYU rules, yes he is wrong. Of course you can laugh at them, just as you can choose to not to attend school there, which is what this kid should have done if he didn't think he could follow the rules.

Why anyone would choose to go there is beyond me.

I don't understand why you're arguing with me over this. I think it's a stupid rule and they should stay the hell out of the player's bedrooms. They have every right to make whatever rules they want. I'm not arguing that. I'm saying they were dumb to even have this for a rule.

Re: Obama XX: Maybe We'll Even Talk About Obama

I just don't get saying this:
They were supposed to be the feel-good story of the year. Now I hope those ******** lose in the first round. Sorry, Jimmer; better luck in the NBA.

Grrrrrrr. I'm so mad they have rules they actually expect their players to follow. Grrrr.

No...I'm mad that they have really stupid rules. Sorry you can't understand that.

Right, but they had these really stupid rules before yesterday, did they not? And you said now you are hoping they lose in the first round, which implies the problem is with the suspension, not the rules, or else you should have been rooting against them this whole time, right?

Before yesterday the rules weren't common knowledge. You, of course, know the rules for all 330-whatever Division I basketball programs, I do not.

I noticed a lack of snow and paint thinner...

You get credit for the lack of snow, but we were also looking for the presence of palm trees.

Yes, if there are two things Wisconsin is famous for, it's their tropical vegetation and lack of snow in the winter.

WWM, I'm curious how you'd feel if the rule broken had been one prohibiting inter-racial dating, as one of the Jesus Freak schools had on their books a few years ago. Just wondering if they can make any rule, no matter now abhorent, without losing your support. If it matters, in the current case I think it's a stupid rule that the athlete in question was aware of and he should be prepared to pay the consequences. I also agree with Priceless. Why in hell would anyone want to attend there?

The 18th century was pretty fast and loose, actually. All this crap really started to get going with the Victorians. Our forefathers understood you had to kick the tires before you bought the car. Heck, half the children born in the Puritan colonies were out of wedlock.

Don't try telling any of that to the crazies, of course.

I just find it hysterical that the morality police in this case are from a "religion" explicitly founded on a scam to get a bunch of old men all the teenage tail they wanted. It's as if the Scientologists had a university.

I doubt you can have rules that touch on protected categories like race any more.

As for why anybody would want to attend, I take it you don't live in the southwest. Mormonism is huge in Utah-Arizona-SoCal. Growing up in the east I thought it was a fringe cult, but it's the religion of choice of the local chamber of commerce in most SW towns. They're the western tanned version of well-scrubbed east coast Episcopalians -- come for the Jesus, stay for the business networking. I strongly suspect the vast majority of kids at BYU buy it all hook, line and sinker.

On the other hand, there is nothing on this earth wilder than a lapsed Mormon girl.

To play basketball? Why should it matter to you if someone believes in that crap and wants to be around others who believe in it also. Its their rule, he knew about it, he broke it, see ya.
