Obama XVI: Muslin curtains in the White House!!!

Re: Obama XVI: Muslin curtains in the White House!!!

Which is why I compared NPR to MSNBC...glad you skipped right over that one.

NPR is, generally speaking, to radio what the Economist is to magazines and the NYT/WSJ are to newspapers. All generally have higher standards than their counterparts.

Now I suppose you'll try to tell me that The Economist and WSJ are liberal.
I'm not sure that comparing NPR to the New York Times is doing it any favors! :D

And yes, I understand that you are referencing reporting quality, not whether the NYT has a bias or not. Of course one could argue that the NYT' heavy liberal bias impacts the quality of what they report.

Re: Obama XVI: Muslin curtains in the White House!!!

Didn't dispute the NYT's editorial leanings, nor the WSJ's.

The fact remains they're both written 2 reading levels higher than the average newspaper (which I believe is 4th grade, by the way - NYT and WSJ purportedly are both written at a 6th grade level if I remember right).

Edit: ok, some sites say 6th grade , some say 8th grade for a standard newspaper; either way I know the NYT and WSJ are a notch above the rest.

I said it was impacting his analysis. He can be as straight-laced as he wants on NPR, but if he's running his yap in another public forum, that doesn't work because he represents NPR's journalistic integrity even when he's not on the clock.

That is presicely the reason why a news organization like NPR forbids their employees from editorializing on their own time - that activity will color their professional work, even if that work is of the highest caliber.
In other words, you think it might have been impacting listeners' PERCEPTION of his analysis, which is what you should have said from the beginning.

While we're slinging moonbats and knuckedraggers at each other, did anyone else notice that we're past the 1,000 post mark with no sign of stopping?

What levels were Jayson Blair and Walter Duranty writing on? Lofty no doubt. I'll be watching the returns on MSNBC. Fully expecting somebody's head to explode or at least an aneurysm. It ought to be hugely entertaining. It'll be interesting to see if they can rationalize this butt kicking like they did after the special elections. "Well we got crushed in Virginia and New Jersey (two states "the one we've been waiting for" carried) but we won NY23!"

Actually I agree with you on the writing in the Times and Journal. I think Dorothy Rabinowitz of the Journal should be on Mt. Rushmore.

1. If Williams had uttered the "offending" words on, say, PBS in an interview with Gwen Ifill. This presumes she'd find the time, given her propensity to advertise her ignorance and mendacity (at least when it comes to Sarah Palin). So ask yourself, and be honest, if he'd told Ifill of his jitters at flying with Muslims in full garb, do you honestly think the little lefties at NPR would have canned him? I don't.

I honestly think it had much more to do with the CAIR people coming after NPR than the channel Williams said it on. If he had said it to Ifill, I think those same CAIR people would have been all over them just the same.

It's hard to know for sure. You've got two things to consider here: the actual statement on Fox and the long term association with Fox. I don't think NPR was comfortable with either. Certainly we know that libs everywhere are unanimous in their view that there can be no criticism of Islam, period. Call it the "Goldberg/Behar/Bloomberg/Obama Principle." So the odds are you're right.

Rich Lowry agrees with you:

In this case even someone as far left-wing as Whoopi Goldberg says that NPR blew it by firing Williams. But in general you're correct. Maybe it's because Williams has pretty solid liberal credentials over the years that people like Goldberg are coming out in his defense.

Re: Obama XVI: Muslin curtains in the White House!!!

Good news! More Wiki Leaks Docs, on Iraq this time.

Those documents include evidence of state-sanctioned torture by the Iraqi government, new evidence of Iraqi government death squads, and Iran's involvement in funneling arms to Shiite militias, according to several international news outlets that were able to review the documents before their release.

Perception is reality, particularly for a journalist.

NPR STATEMENT REGARDING THE TERMINATION OF ITS CONTRACT WITH JUAN WILLIAMS

On Wednesday night we gave Juan Williams notice that we are terminating his contract as a Senior News Analyst for NPR News.

Juan has been a valuable contributor to NPR and public radio for many years and we did not make this decision lightly or without regret. However, our audience is simply not sophisticated enough to recognize the difference between the analysis he provides for NPR and the commentary he offers in his other endeavors. We regret that we do not have the intestinal fortitude to stand behind Juan at this time.

We regret these circumstances and thank Juan Williams for his many years of service to NPR and public radio.

This issue perplexes me. People that regularly listen to or watch NPR are generally bright (many of those I know who listen or watch hold advanced degrees). Assuming that to be true of most NPR listeners / viewers, can we not also assume these people should be able to distinguish between someone rendering a personal opinion and offering up fact-based analysis or coverage of news events and reporting?

If we're going to claim that rendering opinions publically on one's own time somehow colors or taints their analysis, then where is the line going to be drawn? What about voting? Something like 90% of reporters vote Democrat. That's a public expression of support for an ideology that some would certainly argue colors their professional work. Should all reporters be stripped of their right to vote while working as journalists?

You know, that's great. I was just thinking it would be a good idea to get the Bush family some more face time before this election.

Also, George should write a book and release it near election day. Oh, he is doing that?
Excellent.

Are people still talking about a corporation executing its right to fire an employee for poor performance?

Post of the thread.

Thats a pretty broad generalization. Id consider myself a liberal type person (at least left of center) and I criticize Islam quite a bit. Of course I do that with religion in general. And I was raised Catholic and was an active participant in church related activities into my early 20's (currently 27). I think a more fair statment would be "the fringe vocal libs are unanimous in their view that there can be no ciriticism of Islam." Just as many broad statements about conservatives would be more accurate if the "fringe right" phrase was added.

Or am I missing some sarcasm here? See why I said I dont usually get involved in this stuff.

I didn't say all or even most liberals. I said liberals everywhere. And it's certainly true that our political discourse in this country tends to be dominated by the extremes. However, in this case, the President of the United States, the Mayor of New York City and some other stalwarts of the left have made it clear that they won't brook any criticism of Islam, which in their view ipso facto, is evidence of "Islamophobia," whatever the h**l that is. The fact that many Muslims (tens of thousands? hundreds of thousands? millions?) believe in this savage interpretation of their holy book is of no moment. What's important is that we don't offend them, by pointing out that Muslim extremists are killing and have killed and advocate killing thousands of people in the name of their religion.

If we object to the construction of an Islamist victory arch as close to GZ as they can get, and call it the Cordoba Project, we're to pay no attention. And we're not to speak out against this triumphal thumb in the eye. Nope, we're just supposed to take it because the President and the Mayor told us to. This may come as a surprise to Obama/Bloomberg/Goldberg/Behar and all the rest, but WE have free speech rights, too. WE are permitted to call this obscenity what it is and to condemn those who support it.

ME? Be sarcastic? Surely you jest ("don't call me surely")
