Voting for the lesser of two evils isn't creating an association with a group. I did no campaigning, contributing, or otherwise for anyone. I voted a split ticket (as I've done every election since I turned 18). I'm technically still a registered Republican, though whenever I get around to re-registering here in Iowa I'll do so as an Independant.

So make of that what you will.

Maybe today is exact right day to worry about anti-Muslim bigotry. The guy is sentenced -- the legal system works (disproving that we needed an extra-legal mechanism that threatened all our liberties) and our protections worked (although I personally agree with your earlier assessment that we have been lucky so far).

But it didn't. Maybe that's the reason our system works, we actually try to educate people? That and we don't have to rely on idiots with explosives? (what, am I being elitist again?)

For the sake of argument, though, even if it had, our criminal justice system would've still worked fine. He'd just be on death row instead of serving a life sentence.

I'm not going to argue for a draconian surveillance system... but saying that our system worked because some idiot was incompetent is foolish. You can't say the system worked... the best you can say is that these are the pluses and minuses we take with our system and that the pluses out weigh the minuses.

One failed bombing attempt is luck. Multiple failed bombing attempts is a trend.

At this point, we're not getting lucky when one doesn't work. They're getting lucky when one of them does. Our system works, theirs doesn't.

We've been lucky because it's a nearly impossible problem to stop a crime if the criminal doesn't care if he gets caught. This situation is not just dangerous because of the possible damage but, since 50% of crime prevention strategy -- deterrence -- is irrelevant, a successful strike is very likely. So maybe it would be a good idea to enlist the aid of the billion plus Muslims who don't want to kill us.

In other news, England has an actual conservative party. The GOP should try to stop any news of this from reaching the states -- people might start thinking.

the Muslims community has been less than outspoken against terrorism and this leads to the perception they support the terrorists. think hatred and bigotry against the Israelis. think Hamas. think Iran. who openly admit they want to wipe Israel off the map and kill the population.

Islam, by its very own precepts, does not advocate free speech, freedom of (or from) religion, womens rights, gay rights or free governments. it advocates for Sharia law. think stonings, beheadings, birkas, female mutilation.

yes there are moderate Muslims out there. but they need to start speaking up and condemning these violations of basic human rights.

The difficult question is not what should we look for (as you put it) and its not what actions make us feel better (what some seem focused on). But rather what should we do based on getting to the future we want to see. IMO treating Islam itself as the problem makes things far worse. The solution is closer if we if we welcome Muslims to western society first and silence and shut down the fraction of Islamist extremists one way or another second.

Another reason to embrace if not the TP than at least what they are ostensibly aiming for: the completion of the banishment of the neocons, the only actual fascistic movement in American political history. The Dems kicked them out of the government and now it's up to somebody on the right to kick them out of the GOP with a finishing move. To think they actually controlled the most powerful military on earth for the better part of a decade is enough to make you sick.

All the things we are trying to do to protect ourselves worked this time, and there was no sacrifice of our basic values in the process -- nobody was tortured, no weddings had drone attacks, no thugs demanded library records, no companies folded like the Mets bullpen and released our private information.

Today is one small battle win in the overall war. If we keep winning battles like this, we will eventually win the war. So today is a day to prevent the overreach that could eventually bring the whole thing down in flames -- the clan instinct to make sweeping generalizations about "the other," thus tainting a huge group with a tiny group's motives and multiplying our enemies a thousand-fold. That instinct leads nowhere good. It gave us the two hundred years of religious wars that directly preceded the founding of the United States and our separation of people's private beliefs and public rights, and our tradition of tolerating religious difference. People who advocate a return to that mindset SHOULD be challenged -- the irony is their thinking is exactly what was sentenced today, and its defeat is what we are celebrating.

In your optimistic assessment you forgot to mentiion "the system worked" because the asshat in question had the planning abilities of Stan Laurel. Not all future terrorists will be so helpful.

I don't see how you missed this (unless it's over 3 pages back), but the Washington Post is reporting that somebody is floating a trial balloon on Obama-Clinton in 2012 with (hold on to your hair piece) Biden taking over as SecState.

As an obvious ploy to move HRC to the top of the ticket in 2016, the thought came to me that I should buy stock in every company that hosts conservative talk radio. Heads would be exploding and ratings will be flying.

Biden in Foggy Bottom would be food for the comedy circuit......
