MediaMatters notes (and even if you hate that group, it's hard to argue with their logic)

I've yet to see them using any semblance of logic other than "how can we make Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, and Palin look bad today?" They have no shame whatsoever and are the kings of taking things out of context.

There are some races in which Palin has had undeniable impact. The AK Senate race is only the latest, but the other two major impacts off the top of my head were in the SC governor's primary and the NY-23 special election last year.

This is hilarious. How many of our portside posters can go one day, ONE DAY without mentioning the former governor of Alaska? Generally in the most condescending language possible.

We keep scorecards of her endorsements. We diminish the impact of some of those endoresements because the candidate "had already won." We make sick sexual jokes about her 14 year old daughter (or excuse the person who did). We tell ourselves (as is customary) the only people who support her are dunderheads or racists or both. Every slip of the tongue becomes a headline (like there are 57 states, oh wait, that was somebody else). We gossip about her private life (who really is the mother of her youngest son?). Some of us move in next door to her home hoping to get some dirt. We elevate the high school dropout boy friend of her 18 year old daughter into a political sage, whose every derogatory quote is carefully recorded and analyzed.

There is a demonstrable madness that has taken hold in vast precincts of the left in this country. Perhaps Palin IS an idiot, I don't know. Perhaps the left remembers the multiple stompings Ronald Wilson Reagan gave them and they're determined not to have it happen again. Certainly Reagan was derogated, made fun of, laughed at, and provided endless entertainment at the cocktail parties of the left. Then he kicked Jimmy Carter into low earth orbit and ground Fritz Mondale into dust. Only time will tell. In the meantime, the whining, screaming, bellyaching, nail biting, hair pulling and wee weeing will continue to entertain us all. But the nagging question remains: if this person is as inept as you say she is, why spend so much time talking about her?

We're not obsessed, really we're not. In the meantime, pull up the blanket.

If A happens at time t and B happens at time t+70days, it's tough to argue that B caused A.

Well, this being politics, I guess it's easy to argue it. It's just hard to do it and not be completely wrong.

Just another twist on correlation/causation. Back in the Jurassic era, there was a popular poster that proclaimed "9 out of 10 heroin addicts started out on pot." Almost certainly true. Did the pot "cause" the addiction? Because 10 out of 10 junkies "started out" on milk.

The "It Can't Happen Here" arguments that center on Palin's insipidity have already been demolished -- every sentient being knew Dubya was a stone cold moron before the first primary, and they still dug 50-ish% out of the saloons to elect him twice, the second time during a war. Don't depend on The People as a bullwark against idiocy -- there is always a way for the operatives to manage that ("the human touch," "she's just like me," blah blah blah), and as a rule, The People aren't all that fond of intelligence. "That guy thinks just because he has a fancy economics degree from a fancy school he knows about the economy better'n me."

Palin's real appearance problem is she combines stupidity, paranoia, and rancor, and that combination is a killer.

But hopefully for the good of the country this has all been a Beckesque cash dive for her, because the real money is made just outside the kill zone, taking pot shots with impunity. Palin was created for punditry -- she has every characteristic to be a Fox headline comedy act from now until she's an éminence gris.

Don't depend on The People as a bullwark against idiocy -- there is always a way for the operatives to manage that ("the human touch," "she's just like me," blah blah blah), and as a rule, The People aren't all that fond of intelligence. But never underestimate the hubris of political cognoscenti who think they can use a demagogue to pull the disaffected to the polls and then be the "real" power behind the throne. If the economy continues to sputter, there will be a deliciously huge, inchoate mass of voters up for grabs but repelled by the usual GOP Wall Street mouthpiece. All it takes is some Lee Atwater smartypants to con the party into taking a wolf into the fold.

If the economy continues to sputter, there will be a deliciously huge, inchoate mass of voters up for grabs but repelled by the usual GOP Wall Street mouthpiece. "every sentient being knew" that GW had graduated from Yale and Harvard, etc. but the cartoon image of him that has been perpetuated for the last decade by people that care more about the perception of elite sensibilities (I eat arugula for breakfast!) than actual intelligence, good will and common sense can get away with this "stone cold moron" talk just because it's been said so often that normal people half-believe it now.
I'd like to vote for Palin for prez just to see the bumper stickers and Canadian emigration that would result if she were elected. But no. There are real reasons not to, which aren't really discussed under the screaming, frothing bile from the left.

It reminds me alot of the Michelle Bachman bashing around minnesota. I even know moderates that make off remarks about her and I can't believe it because I know the guys politics and he leans right and just seems to take everything the left says about Bachman at true. For whatever reason the left is extremely scared of attractive strongly conservative women.

But you won't see Jim Miller getting the coveted party nomination either.

She's got too many serious headwinds that were evident when she came under scrutiny in 2008. None are a deal breaker but the sum is greater than the parts. I think after how quickly and intensely opinion shifted against Bush, many in the party may be afraid that she could turn out to be a female W from Alaska. Don't think that being a female or being a minority for that matter is not a disadvantage, cause they still are.

IMO she needs to be a wolf in sheeps clothing...and she's not, she's just a wolf or a sheep depending on your point of view.
