Obama XIV: President VISTA with SP2

Re: Obama XIV: President VISTA with SP2

Dems nominate the most viable liberal due to their primary process.
Repubs nominate the next guy in seniority.

Half right. When there's an old statue who has paid his dues and/or it's an obvious loser election, each party nominates that old soldier to go get killed (Humphrey, Mondale, Dole, McCain). When it's a toss-up election and there's no obvious time-server whose "turn" it is, the primaries shake out a guy on the party median, in no way radical or even original -- Bush I, Clinton, Dubya (the way he ran, not the way he governed), Obama. The last true ideological insurgent candidates for each party were Reagan (1980) and McGovern (1972).

Honest question...which state would be better in your opinion?

Diverse enough states that the results are reflective of a national electorate. Colorado and Virginia come to mind. Then again, why does any one state need to go first?

Well, I think it depends on what you want to accomplish. If the Republicans want a strong, conservative nominee, someplace like South Carolina might not be terrible. (It sure would be entertaining). Or like Kepler said, you could opt for a state more representative of the population as a whole.

Another thing I'd like to see the GOP work on is making sure primaries are closed, though I think that's more of a state issue right?

in 2008 the primaries started January 3 with the iowa caucus and February 5 was super tuesday. If you had 5 states have primaries twice a week starting January 3 and ending February 5, you get your 50. You could even have the dates of those primaries rotated to give different states the earlier date.

Or do 5 a week for 4 weeks and follow that up with 3 weeks of "super tuesday type numbers with 10 each.

I like the idea of regional primaries so that the candidate isn't spending all his or her time flying between tarmac TV appearances. As a rough approximation: super regionals for the North East, the Atlantic, the South East, the Rust Belt, the South West, the Prairies and Mountains, and the West Coast. Pair each with a debate and move the voting to a weekend to encourage turnout. Randomize the order each cycle. Get rid of the caucuses and, like WWM said, hold closed primaries.

I do like that idea. The only issue is, you have to start somewhere. If the Northeast gets to go first, you might have a vastly different frontrunner than in you started in the Southwest and so on.

What about starting on the first Tuesday in January with 4 states? A Northeastern one, a Midwestern one, a Western one, and a Southern one. (Or something like that). Then on the next Tuesday start in with the regional model.

Funny because The Economist had a puff piece about him this week.

Bottom line is, its Palin or bust (pun intended). Righties are not going to nominate another compromise candidate like McCain. They're looking for a true believer. You can't out-conservative Palin. Romney needs to save his money. Daniels is better off biding his time.

Re: Obama XIV: President VISTA with SP2

You can't out-conservative Palin.

It would truly be amazing if that is what they trotted out in 2012. Try to upend the "corrupt beaurocrat" with "the woman who resigned from her last office because she was constantly being investigated for ethics violations".

Re: Obama XIV: President VISTA with SP2

If it does turn out to be Palin 2012, then the Republican Party and I will be done, professionally (though to be honest, our relationship has been on thin ice since W's second term).

Re: Obama XIV: President VISTA with SP2

"the woman who resigned from her last office because she was constantly being investigated for ethics violations".

That's not how her supporters see her. If Palin went on TV and killed a puppy, announcing before she was going to do it and afterwards that she did and was proud of it, her fanboys would still say it was Teh Librulz!!!11! :p

I can't imagine the GOP being that stupid, but Obama would write her a check right now. Also, any state that she won should have their vote suspended for 20 years, like the Confederacy, not for sedition but just stupidity.

Re: Obama XIV: President VISTA with SP2

I'd say both take both those approaches at times. For example, John Kerry was the most viable liberal? Or Bush2 was the next guy in seniority?

John Kerry was the establishment liberal, backed by the powers that be so moonbat Dean didn't get the nomination.

Imagine if he had, right now we'd be sitting in the middle of his second term, with Obama in the wings for 2012.

Howard Dean? Moonbat?

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

Re: Obama XIV: President VISTA with SP2

I'm pretty sure whichever party occupied the White House in 2007 was going to be out on their ear in 2008. The GOP earned their exile, but it was sort of a fortuitous accident that the blame fell on the correct side.

Re: Obama XIV: President VISTA with SP2

Regarding Palin, ask yourself two questions:

#1) Why wouldn't she run?

#2) Who can possibly match her appeal amongst the party faithful?

Whether the woman thinks she's up to the job, or whether she just wants to line her pockets by hitting the lecture/talk radio circuit after the election, either way running for Prez is the way to go to accomplish that. A red meat, social and economic conservative will be the nominee unless they split the vote in the primaries. If she gets in, I see her clearing the field of likeminded candidates (Huckleberry, Jindal, etc). That leaves her against Romney, who's SOL the minute someone says Obamacare=Romneycare. I'm sure a guy like Pawlenty will jump in looking to get his name out there and maybe land a VP selection but he can't seriously compete in money or enthusiasm.

Now if she doesn't run I couldn't predict who'd fill that void. However, I just don't see her declining to make a bid. Its sorta like how you knew GWB would be the nominee in 2000 long before he even officially announced.

That should be interesting because on the one hand, I think most of us realize at least a conservatives, is that what a conservative governor does at the state level, doesn't really mean he would try and do that at the federal level...especially if he is conservative, believes in states rights and accepts that something like obamacare is unconstitutional. Now, I do agree that many people won't be able to make that distinction, especially if the media doesn't even try and explain the distinction (and I doubt they will).

We're forgetting the whole religion thing too. In 2008, there were wackos in town cafes refusing to speak to him or shake his hand because he was a Mormon and therefore had Mormon cooties. :p
