Norwich Cadets '13-14 - A New Look Forward

I think both NEC and ST. Anselms will make great home games before the Thanksgiving break. Maybe being home will help the Cadets, I certainly hope so. NEC can be a very physical team, we will need to stay out of the box by not roughing them back. If I remember correctly, they spend quite a bit of time in the penalty box and that can only help out Norwich. It's going to be a great weekend!

We could use a STRONG fan turnout this weekend ... students will be bailing out of town for Thanksgiving break on Friday so it is up to you fans to Keep Kreitzberg Krazy!

Friday? - half of them will be gone by Wednesday unless things have changed an awful lot since 2010 :D

Re: Norwich Cadets '13-14 - A New Look Forward

After watching Middlebury outplay Bowdoin last Saturday in a 2-2 tie the Primelink first game with Middlebury should be very tough. Middlebury staked all out and contested the entire ice sort of like the old days for the entire game. They forechecked 2 or 3 guys in order to maintain puck control. I was surprised that a team could skate all out for the entire game on such a large ice surface and they sure looked like a top 10 team.

We're going to find out a lot about this young group of Cadets over the next three weeks. We've got six games in a row against quality to top notch competition.

And St. A's BEFORE NEC.
But I like these young Cadets a lot ... Get out there this weekend and check them out!

Re: Norwich Cadets '13-14 - A New Look Forward

What has surprised me, year in and year out, is the chemistry that this team has. There always seems to be 4 or 5 (or more) skaters that can put the puck in the net. And they are generally a very unselfish bunch. I give all that credit to Coach McShane, as he's done this with every iteration of the roster since he came to the school.

15 skaters to be exact have put the puck in net through four games! :)

Lets give a lot of credit to Coach Mattson for finding skilled players and selling them on coming to NU.

I agree with Puck Voice who I believe said earlier on this board, "I like this young Cadet team....."

But on last night’s Fan Forum with its posts and announcements about Friday's DIII scores .... there were a number of post game remarks from fans about the NU/St.A’s game. Lots of chatter about too much passing, too many missed opportunities and of course a power play that is no good? Surely with some validity.

Face it folks, every opposing team in the ECAC-E comes into EVERY game against Norwich with the dream of knocking off the king. Ever note how their fans go crazy when they score on the Cadets... but even crazier when they take the lead in the game.

St. A’s came to play. They did their homework, they had a plan and they stuck to it. It has happen to Norwich before and like night follows day…it will again. Actually, NU was lucky to have come away with a tie. Prezde--was right when he predicted a tough game last night and again today.

No doubt McShane will make adjustments but congratulations to St. Anslems. They played a great game of hockey last night. Now lets move on….as I am sure our coaching is already working to make sure that last night contest was a mere anomaly for this new NU club and they will not allow it to become a trend for the season. Go Cadets—beat this NEC team because as Indiana Jones once said about some proper villians, "I hate those guys...."

Don't like NEC at all. Never have. Just want to see more from some of the guys. It's different, and I don't want to sound like an Oswego fan, but this is new not having a big core of veteran leadership. Good potential, but need to grow. I know this is going to be a different kind of year.

Hey NU Prof. You and I have always shared the same opinion of NEC as long as I can recall reading your insightful posts. You don't in the least sound like an Oswego fan. This is that transitional year that we knew was ahead of us the moment those four horsemen graduated last year. Better to suffer a wake up call with a St. A's tie than a whipping by a more skilled opponent. That would not be good for the ego.

I do believe if we get off as many shots today as we did last night (47)--that will settle the issue. But we must best those NEC guys now before they start believing their own press releases. I don't even want a close game--I want a crushing.

Well said and I am sure all the players are willing to crush. It is easy to be an arm chair coach and make comments on what needs to improve and what is or isn't working. I have confidence in the Cadets coaching and the players willingness to always improve and do their best each and every game. Norwich is a great team to be a fan of because of their desire to be the best. Good luck today!

When Thomas, Mulvey, etc. showed up there were also a lot of other frosh as well (11 in all), but 5 or 6 of them stood out and took the team with them (The big 4 plus the the Schroeder twins), and there didn't seem to be as much uncertainty as to roles. That being said, we just have to watch and root for them. My Samsung/Apple combo is getting ready for today ...

Re: Norwich Cadets '13-14 - A New Look Forward

They're back! Norwich 3-1 vs NEC at end of the first. Pichette very cool move and shot for a shortie, Duszynski in front of the net from Gorman and Janke on the PP and a sweet steal from Surowiec for the third goal. I think the Cadets have recovered from last nights tie to St. A's!

I think they got some wisdom from McShane. Everything looks more solid. Still too many defense men taking risks. That can burn if you don't cover up

Re: Norwich Cadets '13-14 - A New Look Forward

Yes, still some defensive lapses, but much less this game. Even Travis Janke made a bad pass, so mistakes do happen. I am feeling more and more confident in Ryan Whitell, he has settled down quite a bit, and I am very impressed with the combo of Hale and Smith. Good things are happening and will only get better on the Norwich Blue Line.

Offensively, all 4 lines scored again, some great individual effort on the unassisted goals by Surowiec and Pichette and the first line of Janke, Gorman and Duszynski continues to click. Gorman is on fire, 2 goals and 3 assists for the weekend and Janke 1 goal and 3 assists. Another two Freshman get their 1st Norwich career goals to make it 17 players who have scored and it is only the 6th game of the season. Also, the 1st line accounted for 8 (3 goals, 5 assists) points out of the 14 total earned today.

Goaltending, he may not face as many shots as other teams, but Matic is staying alert and plays with confidence. I think it must be hard to stay alert when you don't see many shots and Matic seems to always be ready.

Penalty kill looked great, we took less penalties and the Power Play was more effective. More shots on goal, less wasted passing and player's crashing the net really made a difference.

I am interested in finding out what other posters think about this weekend. I thought St. A's played a better game than NEC or... did Norwich not play as well as they did today? Have NEC and St. A's played each other yet? If not, I think St. A's would win if they played the way they did last night.

All in all, pretty happy with how this young team is playing and hope they continue to mature at the pace they are currently doing. They kind of remind me of the freshman group of 4 years ago, only this year, there is more depth and 4 strong lines. Never thought I would say that and didn't anticipate topping that freshman class of 2010. I hesitate to make predictions, but four years ago at this time, I thought that Norwich had great chances of going all the way. This year... "I am just not saying" because I don't want to jinx them!

Happy Thanksgiving to all and THANK YOU to the team for a very entertaining beginning of the season.
