Norwich Cadets '13-14 - A New Look Forward

Re: Norwich Cadets '13-14 - A New Look Forward

Don't hang your heads low Cadets, there is a lot of hockey left to this season. You have some work to do, but your potential is great. Get to it!

Unfortunately, the let themselves get sucked into playing retaliating against a very physical UWS team. They needed to play their own game and just skate away. Instead, they chose to confront them. Bad choice and it took them out of their game. Typical mistake of a young team. They have to learn. As I said elsewhere, the one thing that is missing (so far) from this team is the one (or usually more than one) guy who is able to pick the team up on his back and lead them out of the doldrums. Going all the way back to Marc Bellemare, Keith Aucoin, etc. and forward there's always been at least one "superhero" (usually more than one at time) who had that quality. I haven't seen that guy step forward yet. He may be on the roster, but he hasn't stepped up yet, given the St. As game, the Midd game and the UWS game. I think there's a lot of talent there, but somebody needs to become the take-charge guy. (This observation should be tempered by the fact that I my observations are taking place 2,000 miles away and it was hard to see exactly what was going on due to the poor quality of the webcast.

Courtesy of some nice detective work from Tanner (Cadet Color Man),

The last time a Norwich men's hockey team scored only one goal on a two-game weekend was during the 1981-82 season. Norwich lost 3-0 and 4-1 to Alaska Anchorage.

The coach was Don 'toots' Cahoon, we were still in Taylor Arena with no sign of Kreitzberg Arena on the horizon, Norwich was transitioning from Hart to General Todd as the President, Ronald Reagan had just taken office a month ago, Charlie still had hair ;), I wasn't even close to being born.

RR took office on 1/20/81.

Exactly when did the 81-82 season start??

(Correction - it was "Toot" (singular, not Toots))

I was in the middle of my second year teaching at NU. I was an Assistant Professor of Mathematics and my rank in the Vermont State Militia was Captain. Andrews Hall and Shapiro Field House were far in the future. There were no women in the Corps of Cadets, all male students were in the Corps, and there was a very limited number of women students who lived on campus and were referred to as "VC girls."

I was watching more Dartmouth Hockey than NU - went to a few NU games, but Rupert Thompson Arena was a lot more comfortable and I knew the opposing teams better. Eventually, I realized that proximity to home and knowing the players from having them as students was an even bigger draw. The big name from of that era was Frank Simonetti. who later played for the Bruins. I had just bought the house I would live in in Northfield for 31 years until I moved to Colorado.

Bottom line --> that was a looooong time ago.

Again, way too quiet on this thread! Cadets, you can beat Castleton only if you play with more intensity and crash the net. Stop passing the puck on the power play and take more shots and crash in for the rebounds. Granted Skidmore's goalie did an amazing job last night, your power play was very lacking. You dominated in the forecheck and your speed was great. You also did very well on the taking penalties side, Hale's penalty was very questionable, they called it contact to the head on the radio and roughing on the stats but all I saw was a clear check. Then again, I am not a ref, but have seen hundreds of mid ice checks like that over many years. Good luck today, go for it!

Good finish last night. Gorman and Janke did what I said needed to happen after the UWS game. Upper class leaders stepping up in a big spot to get the job done in OT.

I'm still concerned about the power play, it just looks way too static on video. I'm not a big fan of the umbrella, but that's a fan's perspective, but it seems like the teams with the most success on the PP are the ones who generate movement down low to create openings. Looking at it geometrically, it's just too easy to maintain the defensive box if all that is happening is the puck going around the outside of it.

Gotta move the puck down low then fire it back to the point, you will catch the defending forwards in no mans land....It's really simple but a lot of power plays forget to move it down low and just fire the puck back and forth at the point....

Exactly - low to high, back down low, low to high, not round and round and round. Need to take advantage of the fact the you've got the extra guy to go after the puck down low.

I've been watch a lot of NHL games this year (go Avs!), and even though the skill level is higher, its still the same thing. The teams that can consistently start the offense down low and go to the point or the high slot are the ones that score the goals.

Washington Capitals Power Play
1. Pass Puck to Ovechkin
2. Ovechkins shoots
3. Did he score? If No, go to 1. If yes. End.

Re: Norwich Cadets '13-14 - A New Look Forward

That last ppt was a classic low to high with a great set up

The seniors are stopping up today

Re: Norwich Cadets '13-14 - A New Look Forward

Good win tonight over Caselton, 6-2. Cadets pick up 4 points on the weekend, while Babson loses to UNE 3-1 (WHAT???), and only takes 3 points. That gives the Cadets a very slight amount of breathing space in the ECAC standings. Duszynski gets his second hat trick of the season and the power play got some power... 2 for 4 with better cycling of the puck from low to high and more shots on goal.

According to my calculations, the Norwich defense has scored 7 goals and 27 assists in 10 games. I may be wrong, but I think that is a lot more scoring then there has been in the previous few years. Am I right, Prez? I think Hale, Whitell and Smith are # 4, 5 and 6 in point scoring, and # 3, 4 and 5 in assists. Hopefully that will continue for the rest of the season.

Today was the first time this season for me to see a game from the seats at Kreitsberg since I had some back surgery this fall. It was a great homecoming for me!

Meanwhile, in Oswego, they go into OT tied 3-3 with Plattsburgh. And thats the way it ends, 3-3 tie. A great day of games in Div III!

That darn 2 is so close to the 3 :)

That is even better! Norwich now has the space to take a fairly big breath in the ECAC standings. (Just don't relax totally though).

From my Blog on NSN Sports.net ...

Tip of the hockey helmet to the Norwich men … playing eight or nine freshmen every night the Cadets finished off a 7-1-2 first semester yesterday with a solid 6-2 win over Castleton at Kreitzberg Arena. This is a very young team and there were nights when they looked like it, but a strong all senior first line and a deep defense helped them weather the storm most nights and the net result right now is a three point lead in the ECAC East standings. A long way to go and a tougher schedule after the Holidays, but NU fans have got to be encouraged.

Great Blog
The Team has done well and has improved and I think will continue to imprrove while leading ECAC EAST which is doing well in non-conference competition also.
