I think all thread are down,Platty has a HUGE game sat night vs Genny in Genny and zero on that thread....Oswego plays its first home game this sat night, besides the U-18 game and zero on that thread as well.....nothing much on the other threads either except the prediction threads...Maybe people are busy getting their Turkeyday lists together, otherwise I have no idea??
I wasn't able to watch the Norwich-Plymouth State game and therefore couldn't pick up any of the nuances of the various players so that I could comment on them. So, Let's talk about attendance. How many season ticket holders are there? Do they double sell these tickets for those that don't go to the game? How many students attended the Plymouth game? Are their seats paid for through activities fees? What is the actual seating capacity for games, not counting standing room? Does streaming the football games have a negative effect on attendance at football games?. How much does it cost to webcast each game? Has anyone done a study to see how many locals actually watch the streamed games, as opposed to those more than 50 miles from the Berg... I live 1200 miles away, and jet fuel has gotten too expensive for me to fly up for the games. There, fodder for the thread, will anyone step up aand continue the conversation?
Fans 1,200 miles away earn a mulligan. As to fans closer to home I think on rare occasions (bad weather nights) they might stay home and watch, but generally I don't think that is the case. Our videocasts are pretty good but don't hold a candle to being there!
Don't want to give too much credit to just one person, but it seems like that ever since NU Prof left for Colorado, this board became way too quiet. Maybe we miss his conversation stimulating abilities, or we have become complacent with our teams ability to win, I am not sure. However, the Cadets need our support this year more than ever as we start out the year with a very young team. The lack of activity on this board might reflect the low attendance at the games and again, I don't have an answer for either problem other than encouraging some of the younger fans (no, not the 10-16 year old ones, but they too are welcome) to get to the games and contribute to this forum. I have heard the jokes and comments about how old the average Norwich fan is, and we all know we are not getting younger. But as long as I am still breathing, I will be a proud Norwich supporter interested in watching the quality hockey the Cadets play. There are times that I will miss a game, but I always watch or listen and turn to this board to get more info about the team. Maybe USCHO and Norwich need to advertise to the younger (again, I am talking about the 20-30 year old group) folks, maybe hold some contests/events to get the interest going. Sound like a job for Prez as SID to push for a promotions crew. Lord knows he does a fantastic job and probably has little time to coordinate promotions. Maybe the Blue Line Club could do more in this department. I am just thinking out loud and don't want to ruffle anyone's feathers, but we really need to get the younger crowd invested in the hockey Cadets. I am looking forward to the game tomorrow night vs St. Mike's squad. Hope there is a good turn out. There, enough said. Good night and GO NORWICH!
Reported attendance was around 1250 for the Plymouth state game. There might have been a tad more there but not too much.
We had a great student turnout with probably 500-600 students there and LOUD.
I will say that this year's team, especially the captains have done a great job rebuilding the grassroots in the community and on campus making connections and showing their faces trying to get people excited to come to the games.
That's a great start. We've got some exciting promotions coming up this season that will hopefully help increase attendance and interest starting with the annual WhiteOut next Friday!
I'm looking forward to tomorrow's game to see how the young team does their second time out against an improved St. mikes team that could play spoiler this year in the ECAC east if people overlook them.
I'm back ... I had serious health issues and it wasn't as active as I'd like to be. But don't give me too much credit. Now as far as this season goes, I was disappointed not to get to see the Plymouth game.
Being back, I've got plenty of questions:
1. I'm curious about the goalie situation. Is the new guy going to be the go to guy this year, or was he given the start against Plymouth because of the calibre (or lack thereof) of the opponent and the fact that it was an NC game? Since McShane started at NU, it seems like the go to goalie seems to be an underclassman who supplants established players. This goes back a long way. Don't know if the seniors burn out, or what but going way back to Nate Eusko, it seems like senior goalies often fall off the radar in their senior year. Is Matic going to be the next one to be victim to that syndrome?
2. Now that exhibition games are allowed again is there any change that the NU/Dartmouth exhibition series can be renewed? The way the Ivy schedule worked and the the old DIII schedule rules work made it a natural. I always liked the idea of my alma mater playing a game against my adopted school (and the source of my paycheck and retirement income). Those games were fun. The last NU game that I saw in person was against DC, when I came back for a fall visit to the area.
3. Is there a forward who is going to step up and lead the team? Seems as though the last couple of years Norwich has lacked that standout player who could attract attention to himself and free up the other guys who were good as well, but not regarded as superstars. That presence helped the team, made everybody else better and then in a pinch he could do it all by himself. Just having players like Aucoin, MacLean, Kashirsky, Thomas, etc. created a different dynamic. Anybody like that on the horizon? Last years team (from what I remember) had a lot of good players, but not a big gun that drew everybody's attention.
4. Will the power play be better this year? Last years power play scheme was the weakest I have ever seen at NU. Too much passing that didn't get the other team to move their feet. In the past the success of the power play was built on moving the play from down low out to the points and creating chaos in the defense. Last year there was too many point to point passes and very few attempts to penetrate the defense.
Lots of questions
Comparing a game with extensive student promotion to attendance for an game with little promotion isn't a fair comparison as far as determining the effect of TV vs. no TV on attendance. When I was there, the few games I missed never had anything to do with whether or not there was video. I'd show up with my earphones in my end-zone seat and that experience was a whole lot better than the few times I couldn't get there and settled for watching part of the game on my computer (or way back when when trans-video would show the game on Channel 7). The Kreitzberg experience is just too much fun. Getting the community behind the team is a very important thing to do. It is good both for hockey and for the reputation of the school. Some Northfielders resent NU, and having a hockey program reach out to the community and show the good things about the school is so important. (I'm waxing very philosophical this morning, and looking forward to my first glimpse of the the team [but wishing I could see it from Section 22, Row 3])
Hope you are feeling better Prof. Maybe a good dose of Norwich hockey will help your health!
I usually watch NSN on the iPad because of the clarity. If I do use the PC I use Chrome.I did not have any problems with the NSN feed for either game, I use Safari because I have a Mac, and the only thing that was annoying was all the ads during the intermissions. I muted it and put on the DEV feed after the third time I heard that "you can't be a St. J. Subaru deal." That was annoying. Maybe there is a faster internet that runs to Colorado
As for the game, I was disappointed (again) in the power play - I know they got one late of a point shot, but the set up once again relied way too much of passing the puck back and forth without making the other team move at all. This has been a recurring theme. Lots of good things, but my goodness I don't understand the power play issues. Is it a question of personnel? I don't want to sound like a negative nelly like some posters for other teams, but I think the power play needs to be addressed. There is more productive puck movement when they are playing 5 on 5. Maybe they should just pretend they are even strength when they have a power play.
