Norwich 14-15

Re: Norwich 14-15

These things cost money. Some programs don't have that kind of budget.

True, but some certainly do, as evidenced by Norwich last night. I know the Norwich women have had camo jerseys for a few years now. While I suspect Norwich has one of the higher budgets, I doubt it's in another league. While not an alternate, I noticed Middlebury has new jerseys with the panther logo on it instead of the traditional "M".

On a separate note, the way this Sap Bucket game is going I wish the hockey game was on NSN to wash this taste out of my mouth. Welp, good thing I have this case of Michelob.

Re: Norwich 14-15

I know in college football that alternate uniforms have become a pretty big tool to lure recruits. It started with Oregon and now seemingly every team has a lineup of modern alternate uniforms. I liked the Norwich winter-camo jerseys last night and began wondering if a similar trend is starting to make its way into DIII. I'm not suggesting that a single alternate jersey is going to persuade a recruit to choose one school over the other (at least, I hope not), but it could symbolize a message that the program is forward-thinking and trendy and that could influence possible recruits. Thoughts?

I guess I'm old fashioned enough to really dislike all the alternate uniforms. I think it weakens the "branding" aspect of a consistent uniform appearance. Would the U.S. Army/Navy have alternate uniforms? I just don't like them. A team's identity is what they wear. I get the idea of a special event special sweater such as wearing pink for breast cancer, and similar causes. Why not wear the alternates during warm-ups and the real uniforms during the game?

I actually agree with you. I just noticed the jerseys last night and threw the idea out there for discussion. Then again, going to Norwich and having grown up in Big Ten Country, I am perhaps more beholden to tradition than most of my peers.

Interesting discussion, the Navy "camouflage" uniform is a prime example. I was told that it saves the Navy money as if a sailor goes overboard, they don't go look for him as he blends in with the ocean and the fuel savings far outweigh looking for him. Personally, I like the Camo uniforms and think they should be the Home uniform.

Interesting. Two years ago the rumor was that those navy uniforms turned orange when touched by salt water to make a sailor easier to find. That's false, but it's interesting to see how rumors change.

I don't like them -- too hard to see the numbers on TV anyway (assuming we ever get to see games on TV any more). As for the Navy wearing camos, I was told it was a cost savings measure if all services had the same BDUs (or whatever they call them these days - I know they changed it to XYUs, but I forgot what X and Y are).

axis on a graph.

Re: Norwich 14-15

I am not sure how long the Cadets are going to use the Camos but it is almost impossible to pick out the numbers when the game is faced paced. How much longer are they going to wear them???

In all likelihood, not as long as it will take for you to make good your wager.

Re: Norwich 14-15

The names on the back of the Norwich camo sweaters show up fine. And i think they would make a fine home uniform, adding a bit of branding to the military tradition of the school. (IIRC, West Point wears (or wore) their camo football uni's during the Army-Navy game.

Don't mess with a winning streak.....

As a play by play guy I NEVER want to see the camos again! Names don't help much from 150 feet away!

As the primary statistician, I've found the camos to be a little more trouble than the traditional white or maroons...However, they aren't too bad once you get used to them. I really like the look of the jerseys, they are sharp and I'm all for the team continuing to wear them while they're winning in them.

You need a handicap. Play in BDU's.

As I said somewhere else, I don't think they are called BDUs any more. Three letters, ending in U, but they called them BDUs after they stopped calling them fatigues, and since BDU, I think there have been two more designations. I don't know why we keep renaming things that are really the same...

From what I gather on Wikipedia (I know it's not a valid source for any academic reference, but it's use is justifiable in such casual circumstances), the Battle Dress Uniform (BDU) - which was shared by Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force - has been replaced by the Army Combat Uniform (ACU), Marine Corps Combat Utility Uniform (MCCUU), Airmen Battle Uniform (ABU), and the Navy Working Uniform (MWU).

This leads me to 2 conclusions:

1. The reason for the renaming of it wasn't just because the pattern was changed, but also because it was no longer uniform across all of the armed forces.

2. The reason you can't remember the new acronym is because there are FOUR new acronyms!

They are all fatigues as far as I'm concerned. :D
