Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

What about go west for a coaching candidate.

Get the current UofW women's coach Mark Johnson. Wasn't he discussed as a candidate for the Penn State job? Being a head coach for a men's team in HE would definitely be a step up for him.

An interesting idea. ? His whole life has been in or associated with Wisconsin (or the Olympic program). Does he want to uproot himself and his family to come to Boston? Would he be happy here?

You're right family could be a complicated issue. However this would be a great opportunity for him to try and compete on a bigger stage. As far as Wisconsin goes if he successful at Northeastern and Eaves decides to leave the mens program it would make him a stronger candidate for the mens job since it would prove he could coach and win at the mens level.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

If we go west I'm guessing we'll look to someone in the USHL, maybe the BCHL (does the Vernon Viper's coach want to move? He has several national championships with his team).

I just want the search to avoid retreads like Whitehead, MacDonald, etc. and focus on fresh faces. Look at LaPlante (I would love to see him there), Cavanaugh, maybe some other assistants of strong programs, and some junior coaches that have done well.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

The one thing that strikes me is that there doesn't seem to be a clear, odds-on favorite amongst us fans. I think a very important issue for NU, for this hire in particular, will be getting a coach that can hold up to and work well under Peter Robey. We've all seen how hard it was to make NU and it's hockey facility an attractive sell to recruits. It can't be made any easier to accomplish if you're at war with the AD. at first look, I think Mark Dennehy would best fit the job. He has already done a great job at another school with less than the best environment to sell. However, he recently signed a nice, long extension, too. He may not even want to leave the 'Mack. I'd like a coach who has proven he can be a Head Coach already, but that may not be possible right now.
Any idea of a timetable that the school may have in mind for getting a new guy in place?

I think LaPlante is the plurality favorite among fans, but most of us want to see due diligence done and a full search completed before anyone is appointed. I think Matthews is a better sell than a lot of places for recruits, especially if we get them here during a game, and Boston sells itself. What I've heard other fans hope is that we move fast and secure someone by mid to late July. I think it's safe to say by the start of next week we'll have gotten the resumes and information of most everyone who is interested, and we can start narrowing down from there.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

The feeling I have as well is that LaPlante seems to be the favorite among NU fans. Does anybody have the story on his background in coaching other than what is provided on gonu.com:
Before coming to NU in 2008-09, Laplante, 38, spent the two seasons as an assistant coach with the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He assisted in all aspects of the game, including offensive, defensive and neutral zone systems, penalty kill and practice management. He was responsible for pregame preparation, scouting opponents and players/prospects, and also helped negotiate and complete personnel moves. Over Laplantes two seasons with Moncton, the Wildcats went 60-59-9-12.

Laplante began coaching with midget and junior teams in Sacramento, Calif., in 2003. In his final season in 2005-06, Laplante led his Midget team to a California State Championship, a Norcal Youth Hockey Association title and a 39-10-1 record. He was also assistant coach of a Junior B team that season, helping it to a third-place finish in the Western States Hockey League and a 29-16-2 record.

While I love his NU pedigree and the fact that he bleeds red and black, it appears there are some other potential candidates with better resumes. If Seb was given a chance (assuming he isn't as seasoned as other available candidates), he could catch lightning in a bottle, win with the incoming recruits and maintain the rising stock of NU.

I'm a big no for Blaise and Whitehead.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

What has happened to all of the Whitehead fans in Beantown????...........

Methinks that our friendly Black Bear posters are trying just a bit too hard to interest in their coach.;)

Wouldn't it be ironic if their "great bald hope", Jim Montgomery emerged as a serious candidate. If we hire him, will we see the Black Bear fans have kittens?:D

I wouldn't be surprised if Montgomery looked into the job, and I think he should be considered. However, I don't want him if he's going to jump to Maine in a year or two, if Maine is his dream job then we can do better. Montgomery does have the advantage of having coached Saponari and Gaudreau, and won the USHL championship with an expansion team this year is great, but having this be his first year as HC in the USHL I wouldn't sound the trumpets for his arrival before we take a long look at him. I think Montgomery could be a great coach, but I think he has to be committed to Northeastern, and I think the relative lack of coaching experience may end up hurting his chances.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Montgomery (if in the mix), has to be looked at seriously.
He has also had some experience behind the bench at Notre Dame.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

..i'd like to add, if experience is what the U. is looking for.. Billy Powers just completed his 19th or 20th year at Michigan. Just solid all around.

Has ties to New Hampshire (the State not School) & he played hockey there.. just an excellent nuts & bolts guy and he's learned a lot from Berenson & brought success to Michigan.

Just speculation on my part.. but if the U. is going to go that route (heavy collegiate experience, right mix of academic/student athlete ).. right there is a solid candidate with the right mix Northeastern (Peter Roby et al), is looking for. As much as i like LaPlante.. i think with someone like that (if interested & available).. a lot of folks that love NU hockey (LaPlante himself) would go along with.

In the end.. i'd be very happy if Laplante got the nod.. but as some other NU faithful have (rightly) said, there are a few others with the right mix & some excellent depth/ experience at the college level.

Let's go Huskies! :)

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

My darkhorse candidate would be Mike Hastings from the USHL. He has college experience at Minny, but the move to a college HC could be a step down financially and he may not want to move back East. Of course, Ron Rolston is the most obvious other "outsider". BTW, it's nice to see Greg Cronin move to the NHL, both becasue it's a
step up for him and opens another HC job to keep breaking the log jam of quality guys waiting in the wings. Hey, how about Brian Durocher or Brian McCloskey from the BU & UNH woman's programs. Both have a lot of D1 men's experience.

It's not a bad idea but I don't think NU would consider Durocher with close ties to Parker and the BU program. Maybe I am wrong but I just can't picture them approaching Durocher about the position. He is a great coach and would do a great job but don't see it happening

They're going to go after the best coach possible. They're not going to avoid Durocher so they can be nice to BU.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

I don't believe Northeastern has the slightest desire to be "nice" to bu. Ever!
