Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

I don't believe Northeastern has the slightest desire to be "nice" to bu. Ever!

I don't think it's as much a matter of NU looking to be "nice" to BU as it is NU being wary of Durocher's allegiance to BU. Northeastern wouldn't want to hire him just to have him possibly leave when Parker eventually retires.

Even if NU did reach out to Durocher, I'm not so sure he would want/take the job because of his strong BU ties and commitment to the women's program.

This was my point not that NU is out to do any favors for Parker or the BU program.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Hiring LaPlants woud almost defintely keep all of the current recruits.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

I am surprised that no one is talking about Albie O'Connell. He seems to have the better college coaching resume.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Don't follow NU much at all, so I have no idea if this is true, but would hiring LaPlante be like West Virginia hiring Bill Stewart as their head football coach after thumping OU in the Fiesta Bowl post-RichRod bolting to Ann Arbor, because it was the "feel good" thing to do, and it turned out that he regressed the program into mediocrity and lead to a nasty exit that played out over the past couple of weeks? Basically, would LaPlante just be the feel good hire since he did fairly well while Cronin was out, he'd probably keep most of the recruits, and things would be kept in tact now, but down the line is uncertain since (I believe) he has no collegiate head coaching experience?

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Durocher has gone on record saying he has no intention of moving over to the men's game. Of course that could all change with one phone call and a big paycheck, but I don't see it happening here. I like the Hastings suggestion. Have heard nothing but great things from guys who have played for him. Have heard more than once that he might be the best juniors coach in the US.

Why not Albie O'Connell? Even a farther reach....and I have seen it before although I can't remember where...just that it was successful...promote Sebastien and Albie to "co-head coachs" and get the best from both! Add a couple of assistants and take a "team" approach. I know...sounds silly...BUT if Sebastien and Albie have a strong relationship based on respect...a "symbiotic" approach could have great results. Pay them accordingly and equally and have them work together "like rented mules". If anything...it would be fun to experiment with!

Mike Hastings has coached in Omaha, Nebraska in 16 out of the last 17 years - the last two as the Associate Head Coach at UNO. When he left the Omaha Lancers (USHL) after 14 seasons as Head Coach, he went to the University of Minnesota for one year as an assistant. He surprised the Minnesota staff by leaving after a year and returning to Omaha to assist Blais at UNO. Doesn't sound like a guy who wants to coach anywhere east (or north, south, west) of Omaha.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

..that's all well & good, but from an NU perspective.. hoping he can come back for 1 more year.
Would be great for his development & for our team. We have some solid 'D' coming & he would enjoy it..

Who knows.. maybe it's a package deal :).. Cronin & Oleksiak to Toronto.
Hope Coaches convince him to stay put 1 more season. Happy for him regardless, great find!

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

I know, I hope we get one more season out of him. It'll be for his own good. He's a long term project.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

From what I've gathered, Oleksiak made his intention to remain at NU quite clear. Now, whether that changes with Cronin gone remains to be seen. I think most teams recognize the need for him to mature before he comes to the NHL

He has indicated his intention to return. However, a lot will depend on which team drafts him. Furthermore, that particular team will have it's own idea of what will help him to progress. I think that Cronin's departure would hurt our case for retaining him, but I cannot begin to think like the PROfessionals who make the draft decisons - fortunately.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Congrats to Jamie O. on being drafted by Dallas. Hopefully we see at least one more year of him at NU.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Sorry guys. I would love to see Oleksiak stay...But...I think there will be a big push to send him to the Saginaw Spirits where he can play an 80 game season preparatory for the NHL. I believe there is little doubt that he will play in the NHL....a second year of college becomes kind of meaningless. And with Cronin gone...that could factor in as well. If he is going to get a new coach...a new system...etc., he might as well do it in the OHL. Or at least that could be one thought. Sure hope I'm wrong! MAYBE...if LaPlante becomes the head man...he might stay but I doubt it.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

I'm growing less and less optimistic about his chances of returning. Still, we got one year from him and he'll henceforth be known as Northeastern's Jamie Oleksiak so that's something to be proud of.

How cool is it that the entire hockey world was watching clips of NU hockey tonight?
