Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Oh, you Maine guys! You're like Frat guys trying to dump a bad date at a party: "Go ahead, dance with her. She's a swell gal!"
No, thanks.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

most 'real' fans love tim whitehead. So i would just ignore the others.
He is a great coach and an educator. The players that have played for him have really developed as players and quality individuals. He is an excellent coach and role model. But i would be shocked if he left maine.

timmay!

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Do you have any knowledge or are you just reporting what USHR said? I would probably lose a whole lot of hope should he get the job, we need someone new, not someone going for their 3rd HC job

Someone in the AD would have to be brain dead to hire MacDonald. I don't think there is any chance whatsoever of this occurring unless the blogger happens to be employed in the NU Athletic Dept.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Kind of surprised that LaPlante and O'Connell are getting most of the talking up here. Does anybody else think that Mike Cavanagh, Mark Dennehy and (maybe) David Quinn are the guys to consider?

I agree with the three you mention as being the best candidates. Personally I think neither LaPlante nor O'Connell are not ready to take over a program like NU. No offense to either of them, they just aren't in the same league as the other three you mention. The reason I think Mike Cavanaugh is the man for the job is he will be committed to NU Hockey. Quinn wants the BU job and Dennehy wants the BC job, let's not kid ourselves. Although Cav has been at BC for 15 years, he is not a BC guy, he is a Jerry York guy. He didn't go to BC, and other than having a hand in providing them with 3 NCAA titles, he has no ties there. Furthermore, he has been the best, most consistent, division 1 college hockey recruiter in the country for the last 15 years. Being a natural recruiter and having Yorkie as a coaching mentor, the guy has all of the skills to take NU to an elite level.

Please confess: You were an English major at bu.

It happens that Cavanaugh interviewed for the NU position six years ago. While I can't claim to have been there, someone who was thought he did poorly. Time passes. Individuals grow and mature. You may be right that it is his time to shine. He certainly is a capable recruiter, but really, how hard is it to recruit kids to BC? Is he a "Xs and Os" guy. Is he the motivator and psychologist that is behind the BC success? Has he been allowed to develop those skills by Jerry? IMO, Of the three gentlemen you mentioned, he is the only one likely to be both an applicant and a viable candidate.

Between the two assistants, I don't think that Albie will be a candidate. In fact, he may be moving on to Harvard. While Cro has received credit for great recruiting, Albie and Seb have spent a lot of time on the road doing the spadework and introductions. A great deal of the work has been delegated to them.

OTOH, Sebastien, at 40, has been around the coaching for a while. He was a terrific player for us and was a four year Academic all star as well. The alumni know and like him, as do the people at the U. (including Roby, from what I have observed). The kids also like him, relate to him and, most critically, they appear to be willing to play hard for him. Lastly, he views the job as a lofty career goal and would probably grow old in the position if his efforts met with reasonable success.

I know this is not a "pat each other's back" site...but must say I enjoy Ryecheer's posts and find them very insightful!

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

OK, I've been missing from here for awhile but I did want to share my thoughts.

Firstly, I was a big fan of Cronin. I think he really brought our level of play and standards to a whole new level. I am dissapointed that he is leaving a little late in the game. Secondly, I do not like Peter Roby. He's a basketball guy. Its pretty obvious that he's not a serious AD and his department runs accordingly. He got rid of football, only after promising some very hefty donors that it wasn't going anywhere. He clashed with Cronin, one of the best things to happen to our hockey program in a long time, and he doesn't interact with the alumni young and old. Just check it out for yourselves. Go in to the Varsity Club on any given Friday or Saturday night in between periods. He's usually talking to the same guy every weekend, or standing there alone in the corner like a boob. I mean, com'mon guy, how about mingling and introducing yourself to some of the young alumni....you know, the people that are going to be contributing financially to the program for a lot of years if you play your cards right? How about asking some opinions from some people? How about learning about hockey and making an effort?
Lastly, I think I'd like to see LaPlante get the job. He has experience, kids like him, did a fine job last year with all the B.S. distractions and most of all, HE'S AN NU GUY! We need someone who is invested in the program. He's going to want to win and do well not only because he wants to be a sucessful D-1 hockey coach, but also because he has a sense of pride about the NU hockey program and his experience is a part of the man. Bruce Crowder= UNH, Cronin= Colby/Maine. Jerry York=BC Jack Parker=BU. Yeah I know people will say, well....this guy and that guy coached for the school they played at and they were awful. My response, lets give an NU guy a shot at being the head coach of the program. If it doesnt work out, it doesnt work out. Could it be that much worse than Bruce Crowder?

Am I crazy? Totally off base? Your thoughts?

Let's be fair to the guy. From what I read, that football program was going to be gone sooner rather than later and it's probably for the best. And second, can you blame him for clashing with a coach that violated NCAA rules in what I believe I read was already a very sensitive environment concerning this issue?

I think you should want the guy that is best for the job. NU grad or not. An NU degree is not going to make him a better recruiter, X and O guy, or motivator. If you can get that plus passion in the NU program from a non-NU grad (and God knows you should), then it shouldn't matter where he graduated from.

We have all seen programs suffer from going with the alum for the sake of going with the alum.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

From what I can gather...Sebastien LaPlante is a good guy....has paid his dues and I am sure has learned from Cronin...which would make for continuation in the growth of the program...and keep the team together along with the feelings of the new recruits. Afterall, from what I can find out...this is a pretty top-end recruiting class coming in. LaPlante is the best choice if NU fans and alumni don't want to start over again with possible years of low level results. Just my somewhat "uneducated" NU opinion. Now you can all "T-off" on me! (Oh...and I'm sure his "X's and O's" are just fine! He's 40...I don't think he has spent his years in hockey learning nothing.)

One other thought...there is no problem with LaPlante. The problem may be Robey!

Apropos of nothing but who brings a date to a frat party? Is this 1963?

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

FWIW I like Roby as our AD. I agree with his overall view of the role of athletics at northeastern. Does anyone think cutting the football program was the wrong move? I can see how his and Cronin's personalities would clash, but I have not seen anything to indicate Roby forced Cronin out. There has been just as much talk over the past couple seasons that Cronin eventually wanted to move back to the NHL.

I completely understand why people want Sebastien as the next coach, but having played for NU should be very far down the list of important qualifications for this job.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Agree with the comment on Roby.. i think he is a stand up guy & very smart (just my opinion as well).

Far as candidates for the Hockey job.. of course we should get the best candidate possible & i think Sebastien should be in the mix precisely because of that.

Who knows, perhaps he likes his current role & any new Head Coach (were it not him), might value his experience behind the NU bench, in the role he currently serves.

Still feel at some point (if not already), he'd make a good Head Coach.

Re: Northeastern Huskies Offseason (Discipline: let's find it)

Actually my support of LaPlante has nothing to do with him previously playing for NU no matter how good. I am not an NU alumni and I would base my decision only on what is good for the hockey team to the exclusion of all else. Considering the timing of this problem, smoothness in "transition" DOES carry some weight and how in h*ll do new Head Coachs come to fruition.... I am a Catholic...but having said that... head coachs are not part of the immaculate conception process...no matter what BC and Notre Dame believe! Sebastien LaPlante's time is NOW! And I hope Albie stays too...Harvard can't have him. These two coachs have been together for some time ...Cronin moves on as is the normal scheme of life....the proteges take over. Add another young assistant at the end of the chain and lets move on!
