Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Kind of ironic all the Northeastern posters for these games feature Ferriero. The first three goals could all be linked to a specific failure: Rawlings was standing even though the puck was right behind the net for the first goal, Bitetto fell down and opened up an odd man rush, and Ferriero's penalties cost us that 3rd goal. Cronin needs to shake things up in a big way tonight, play Witt, break up some lines maybe, just something to get the team motivated. I hope they wake up at some point and realize the're throwing the season away. Daniels and Vrolyk can't come back soon enough.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

I don't know how "northeastern" feels, but this team looked horrible in all aspects tonight except goaltending. Witt stood on his head all night. It should have been 5 goals against.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

If the team plays like this against Hockey East teams, we are in for a very long season

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

In the event you missed it, about 1000 people took in a woeful performance against a poor team in a marginal league that was looking for its 1st win. The box score will show 2 to 1 final Northeastern loss in the Boston Sunday Globe tomorrow morning but alas, it could have been 5 or 6 nothing. Thank God, most of the fans were wearing Halloween costumes because you would not have wanted to admit you were witness to such utter crap on ice. What a poor showing and complete failure of both the players and coaching staff as the scheduling Gods were kind to Northeastern in October granting them six home games in their old barn and from that kindness they recepricated with not a single win and now the skies of November turn gloomy and the gales of December come early. Look at the schedule sports fans.

Although, I must add that Witt was tremendous between the pipes and could very well be the starter based on this performance. Who knows he just might have won the job. He has tremendous coverage area in the crease and made some sick acrobatic saves that Rawlings could not event attempt due to his 6 foot plus frame. Witt really made some highlight reel saves, trust me the best you and I have seen in quite a while even better than Bruce and Brad in some ways, you had to see him tonight; it seems that historically good goalies have a way of finding us and for that we can be thankful. Witt, in my view, was the lone bright and shining star in a sloppy game of puck. Bentley’s goalie was also on the top of his game tonight and equally up to the task.

The teams’ performance however, was perhaps the worst hockey I have seen in a very long time, certainly in the post “Flaman” era. So my thoughts to you are this, Newsflash, I am not thinking this is a fixable thing. Aside from the top line I don't think we were competitive. It’s the little things in hockey and the team is just missing on far too many facets of the game. Last year, I correctly predicted a 15 win season and this year I am sadly and realistically saying to you all tonight that we will be quite South of that mark unless a tremendous turn around occurs. Ten or less win is a viable possibility and more likely probability. So, we all need to prepare for it, and next week’s contest against a strong Niagara team will be another big test at home where we recently appear to have no advantage. They will skate circles around us if we do not step it up, and then it’s on the uphill road to road to the likes of Maine and the next thing you know it's Caity bar the door turn out the lights, the team is woefully unprepared and I don’t see a glimmer of cohesiveness here.

I do know this, when I got up form my comfortable seat at the glass in the normally packed husky club, the place was empty and you could hear a pin drop. Lots of ex. players far better then myself are scratching their heads tonight and the rumblings are not good sounds. I am going to just let Greg see if he can right the ship before it’s too late, but he has a lot of rope and he may just wind up hanging himself, if, this does not get this fixed real soon, of that I can assure you.

Thus, I have reluctantly decided that am not going to watch them for a while and will regroup after the December break, to reassess the condition of the team and any pending funeral arrangements at that time. Clearly they are in need of some form of life support. Monday, I will give the seats through December to the student union and the College of Arts And Science as freebies to a few deserving Co-op students.

Where is the real Rico Rossi. We sure could use him now.

I can certainly understand how you feel a this weekend's fiasco. You are spot-on concerning Witt's performance tonight. Without him we would have been routed. Perhaps we should have been routed so that the team and its fans can say that "we have hit bottom". Instead the team can say that they lost a close game. Who's kidding Whom?
The team's play so far this year represents the greatest regression I can ever remember seeing. We fans are left to wonder, what is wrong? The team can play BC and UNH and look like the competitive program we've been building, or it can look disorganized, disinterested and incompetent against teams that we should be able to handle. Offensively we are a huge mystery. Our Powerplay is powerless. Our PK is inadequate which is bad news for a team that leads the league in PM per game. OTOH the defense, which was expected to be our achilles heel, is holding the opposition to fewer than 2 GPG. Everything is bass-ackwards.

The best thing I can say is that it is still October -barely. We still have 28 games and 24HEA games left. The talent is there. Let's hope that this team's problems can be identified and fixed in the near future.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

This team needs to grow up quickly if we're going to have any shot of even making the HE tournament.

I don't know if its lack of experience or lack of stones but the most frustrating part of the 1-4-2 start is that we have had a lead in 5 out of the 6 games. More times than not, it seems as though we immediately relinquish the advantage a moment or two later.

Like Ryecheers said, the talent (although maybe not as much as we thought) is there. Cronin needs to kick their a**es this week in practice because right now they are an embarrassment to the program, the university, the arena and most of all themselves. A Rex Ryan "lets go to eat a snack" speech would be nice.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Congratulations to Holy Cross & Bentley.

Witt was outstanding. No question.

Nice to have 2 strong goalies in the line up... yet nicer to have a team that believes in themselves at some point.

For those of us who "live and die" for our favorite college hockey team, there comes a time when that is secondary. And that time came to Pioneer fans this weekend.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — University of Denver center Jesse Martin sustained three neck fractures in Saturday night's hockey game at North Dakota and was transferred to a Minneapolis hospital this morning where doctors are deciding if emergency surgery is required to relieve swelling of the spinal cord, the player's father said.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

A lot of you NU fans know me here, so I want to echo vizoroo and ask that the NU hockey community give some good vibes, prayers, or whatever you believe in, to Jesse Martin from the University of Denver, along with his family, friends, and the entire DU community. As a player for CC's arch-rival, he is a well respected rival, a great student, a hard working player, and by all accounts, he's also a great guy. He has a major neck injury that has not only ended his college hockey career, but threatens his very livelihood right now. You all are some of the best hockey fans I have ever encountered, so I know this is something that will bother many of you as much as it does me. Please send Jesse some positive vibes.

agree.

Unlike past yrs where we did have good beginnings.. this has been pretty ugly. Still.. i do have hope & expectation that also unlike past yrs ..this season we can gel & get it together for post January play.

Of course it has to start sometime, someplace (hopefully this Friday).. and it will at some point. Perhaps on the road. I still have faith in Coach Cronin. I did not see Cody skate against Bentley so its nice to see the coaching staff send the right msg as well. Hopefully he & others who have been a bit undisciplined get the message loud & clear. Again, all they have to do is look at tape of the NU-BC gm from a few weeks ago. That was an excellent NU team.. the same guys we have right now. They displayed speed, talent & some great 5x5 hockey against a solid team. We have that team (including 2 good 'tenders).. let's get it going once more. C'mon Huskies.. let's go :)

This here is exactly how people should be responding to this weekend.

This weekend was arguably the single worst weekend since the 80s for the program. Two losses to TWO teams in a lesser conference. Since I have been a part of this university (1999), we haven't lost ONE game to a team from the Atlantic Hockey/MAAC conference. To lose twice in a weekend to them? Unheard of. I'm disgusted with the way we played. The one thing that I feel needs to come out of this weekend is a call to action. By the team and by the fans and donors. I certainly let it be known after the game from my perch in the balcony. More people need to do the same.

Simply discussing the games on this message board isn't going to get things done. The University and Roby don't read this. But they do read the bottom line, and when the number goes down, the message is loud and clear. When an explanation/warning precedes it, then they listen.

Now you could continue to talk about how the goalies held us in there, but they didn't play great. They just played better than the rest of the 18 NU players on the ice. We could continue to talk about the little things here and there, or we can stand up as a fan base and actually try to help and fix this program.

I travel from the NYC area for games. I don't make it to every game, but I've been to 4 of the 7 games so far. I've seen enough to see that the BC and UNH games are the exceptions to the rule so far. It gives us hope, it give me hopes of 10 wins this season. This program has been a major part of my life for the last 10 years. It was what I look forward to come October. It gives me a reason to return to Boston. But right now, I'm enjoying the drive up and back and sitting at Uno's before the game a heck of a lot more than sitting in my seat. In fact sitting in the Varsity Club and watching college football sounds more enjoyable than what we witnessed this weekend.

Think of it this way. If NU was an SEC football team and we lost two straight games to Sun Belt teams, what do you think the reaction would be among their fan base and donors.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

you make very good pts, no question we're all disappointed.

If you look at Maine last season.. i think at the same point (approx).. they were something like 1-5 to start their season.. we may or may not have the same make up (character/ talent wise) as them, but perhaps we may. Players develop, blossom, gel.

I think more than any of us (fans).. the team wants to do better. I am sure they realize & feel (more than us)..what just happened. Sometimes you need to get kicked hard that way, to realize..wow, this sucks! If they have it (in them), they will right this. If not.. then that's the way the cards fall sometimes. I still think we're going to see more of the NU team we saw in gm 1.. once again. (Eternal optimist) :)

AMEN! Agree 100%. I urge supporters, season ticket holders and most importantly $ donors to call the Athletic Director to voice your displeasure with the effort on the ice and to make it clear that this is UNACCEPTABLE!

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

One, albeit crappy month, and everyone is looking to jump off the Tobin. Yes, the schedule was packed with easy teams in October and the team did not step up to the plate and win those games. But you know what, I have been following this team since 1996, and have seen more then enough brilliant October's turn into February fades. I am tired of this team peaking early in the season, having played their best hockey by January 31st.

All the good teams, the bu's, the BC's, use October as a see what we got month, and start to make adjustments accordingly. Heck, most of those teams use the first half of the season to get things figured out.

Take a step back and look at the talent. Its there. Probably the most talent up front this team has ever had. At least going back to 1996. Some injuries have hurt. Tuckerman-JDaniels-Vroylk, those 3 would easily have started every game, and pushed some guys down to make other lines better. Injuries do happen, and they have adjusted the best they can, but all 3 of those guys are major minute guys having to be filled in with the likes of Morra and Dongara, nice energy guys, but they aren't going to score goals or kill penalties either.

Hell, the loss of Newton has been huge, being stuck with Guizor in the back along with Maley being hurt and Meunch done forever. Couldn't know back in the summer those two were going to be useless right off the bat.

I am not saying that everything is ok, its not. If the effort continues to stink, they we will know the team has tuned out Cronin. But I am willing to wait out this season before I join the bandwagon of moving on from Cronin and Co. 6th season in for him now, failing to make the playoffs in back to back season would mean time to go. So would 7th or 8th place. Make the playoffs, have a nice run, have the team show some energy, and its all good again for a 7th season.

So lets relax, hope the effort is ramped up on Friday, i personally do not care about the result, and hope that the team can go to Maine, a place where they have played well under Cronin, and get at least a split.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Agreed, Huskies01

let's not jump ship just yet people. It's early, and we got a hell of a lot of young talent out there. Look at the roster: 18 freshmore and sophmen (ha ha).
We should have expected a rough start. There have been glimmers of home out there (BC, UNH) and the issues are teamwork and effort. Teamwork is something Cronin can/should definitely work on. Effort? I can only hope it will come with confidence.

Refusing to come to games won't help this team grow any. See what it did to the football program? For the issues of effort, they need support, not neglect. Lets be loud and present like always at Matthews, and we'll come out on top in the end.

The difference between a NU fan and a BC fan? We show up. Always. Let's not change that. (Anyone seen what their football attendance has been this season? Kids escaping left and right after the first quarter...)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

I agree with choog. Plenty of time and although very dissapointing thus far, jumping ship is for quitters. I've been a fan and supporter(when I have the cash flow) since 1987. I've seen a lot worse. Trust me. The talent is there, it's just not hitting. Probably the most raw talent offensively in a long while. I know that doesn't mean results but the players representing the school are solid players. They just aren't playing as well as a team as their individual talents might have us thinking they should.

I'm probably going tomorrow night and I'll catch another ten plus games or so this year. As choog said, we show up to games. And stay too regardless of the outcome. At the Beanpot 1st Monday two years ago, end of the game, maybe 2000 plus NU supporters, maybe 50 BC. Support needs to be there, win or lose!
