Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Tuckerman and Muench will not be back this year.
Justin Daniels should be back in November.
Maley might play again this year.
Will Hoefler play?
Jamie Oleksiak was the best NU player last night. I was told that there were a dozen NHL scouts present to see Oleksiak play. Could be one and done at NU, but I hope he decides not to turn pro next year. He is only 17! Will be the best D man in HE by the end of the year. Could be first D man selected in next springs NHL draft.
Rob Dongara had another excellent game. NU has only scored 4 goals this year and all by frosh! Lack of offense is a major problem. Defense and goal tending have been superb, only allowed 6 goals in 3 games. All 3 frosh D men are off to an excellent start. Wade MacLeod has been terrible. McLaughlin and Silva not much better. Must find a way to score goals.

We agree on most points, but I'm not quite ready to annoint Jamie as the next Bobby Orr. He is far better than I expected him to be at this point and I will enjoy watching him develop and improve. As for turning pro next year, I expect a lot will depend on who drafts him and what his experience is like at NU. If Kreider can spend two years at bc, Jamie can also benefit from an extra year in college. Just in case we have another offensive D recruited for '11 or '12.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Steve Morra skated pretty well. I was impressed with his effort. Oleksiak was amazing & Rawlings was very good.. solid in OT. Cody had a bad night. We could have put it away on that 4x3 had it not been for his (lack of) play. It happens.. let's keep improving.

UNH will be like BC.. fast & hungry. Can't afford to make mistakes like we did last night. Guzior needs to chill a bit. Someone give him a hug :)

Haha, I'm sort of wondering why Guzior is back this year, besides to take penalties and skate backwards very badly.

And like everybody else here, I keep waiting to see Quailer do something special. It's been frustrating to watch because at times it seems like he's right on the verge. We so badly need that offensive boost. Hopefully once he gets his first, the flood gates will open...

Exactly. Kreider, even as a freshman last year, was unbelievable and I was actually a bit surprised he didn't go pro after his one season. And it is usually easier for forwards to adjust to the pro-game than d-men. Granted, no, I have not had a chance to see Oleksiak, other than what I read. And yes, Jake Newton left after his freshman year, but he was also 21 years old, IIRC.

PP and PK are horrible. They smell like wet dogs. 5% on the PP and 72% on the PK???? That's pathetic. We've scored 4 goals and given up 6. 5 via the PK and 1 via the PP. Net of -4. The empty net was technically a chcc pp goal. 5 vs 5 and it's 3 to 1. We're winning the even strength battles. We suck on special teams. Nothing new. But that needs to change and quickly.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

PP and PK are horrible...

As much as i like Coach Cronin.. special teams have been his achilles heel. I don't know if its the sort of drills they're doing/ not doing.. but he has got to try something different. Its still early in the season & this needs to be addressed. We have great skaters.. we need to get the most out of their abilities. A good coach is able to harness that and i think Greg Cronin is a good coach.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

So I know we have yet to win a game, and I know our special teams is probably the worst it could possibly be (except hey, we're one for 19 on the PP right? we got one...)

But I'm still excited/hopeful about this team. We've really got some skill out there and if NU can manage to keep a game to five on five, hey we might just win some games.

Speaking of skill... I couldn't wait to see the highlights of the RPI game just so I could find this clip...

Like I said, there's some real talent out there.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Nice clip.. our opponent tonight has multiple skaters who can do that.
(i know.. so do we, but they're hiding :) ).

Hoping our D has a huge gm. Rawlings has been doing everything he's been asked so far. I still give the advantage to UNH until i see offensive effort we've all been waiting for.

Either way.. we need Hockey East points this weekend! Go Huskies

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Maybe today will be the day we score more than 2 goals in a game...

Rawlings has been too good for this team to be 0-2-2. The offense needs to step up and it starts with the seniors, McNeely and Macleod.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

(-) we can't score on pp or 5x3 (c'mon Cody that's 2 wks in a row now)..
(-) we never have anyone in front of net when someone is behind the net (maybe this is a bit harsh.. but honestly looked that way last night)
(-) we let our opponents back into the gm too many times by giving them the PP right after we just scored
(-) we don't play with discipline even when ahead
(-) did i mention we can't score on the pp

(+) we got our first point in HE
(+) we scored a SHG
(+) we continue to skate awesome 5 on 5
(+) we have an amazing goaltender (i know he'd like to get that first one back from last night)
(+) our freshman look very good

Let's try make this a 3 pt weekend, let's go NU :)

Just some quick thoughts I had, as well:

McLaughlin reached his goal quota for the year, and it couldn't have come at a better time. Good stuff from him last night, and I'm actually hoping to see more of a presence from him this year.

Dongara has got some speed - can't wait to see how much time he gets when Vrolyk and Daniels are back.

I was waiting for Silva to draw a penalty with a minute left in reg. Way too close, and the guy NEEDS to maintain his composure. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'm really glad he's a senior. If it weren't for the lack of depth right now due to injuries, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Cronin bench him.

That early whistle on the goal when Oleksiak was called for the penalty was tough to swallow.

Rawlings looked really good, and I'm usually pretty rough on him. Like you said, I'm sure he wishes he got that first one back, but the defense hung him out to dry a couple times and he came up big.

I'm not quite as sold on Oleksiak as other people seem to be. All I can think of when I watch him is Jon Awe Version 2.0. I must be crazy.

Nothing more needs to be said about the PP that hasn't already been said. Yikes.

I'm still really excited about this freshmen class, but that's all from me for now. Here's hoping for two points tonight!

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Don't look now but the huskies are 1 for 1 on the PP!

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

yea...:) win, lose or draw.. that's forward progress.
now if only we can play with discipline.. we've got something :).

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Good to go into the Holy Cross, Bentley wknd with a 'W'. Neither of those teams will be a cakewalk. Last two home gms.. two ties. Good to see team get the first road win. Would love to see us get our first home win this weekend.

Coach Cronin should reward guys who do not take (unnecessary) penalties this wknd.. win or lose. Disciplined play would be a big step in the right direction versus HE opponents further down the season.

Also, if given the chance.. would like to see team take more shots on goal on the PP. Perhaps Rawlings gets to rest one of the gms this wknd? (i'd choose the Holy Cross gm). He played Bentley very well last season in a close gm. Would like to see Witt in net on Friday. He looked pretty good in the little that i saw of him in the exhibition gm. HC & Bentley will both be hungry for 'W's as well.

Let's get the fans out (especially Sat home gm with no classes) & let's go Huskies :).

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

What an atrocious show tonight (halloween on ice!)... with no tricks nor treats, (well maybe 1 treat in OT for the visitors!)

if the home opener was the ceiling (effort wise)... tonight's gm was the floor (to quote from Versus).

D looked horrible giving up 4.. including PPG, SHG (with bit of bad luck) & that poor (back check) giveaway in OT. I am glad Cody Ferreiro was 'cooling off' in the 3rd tonight. He should be benched for the nxt gm & ponder a bit. He took 3 penalties tonight (at last count).. one of them costing us the 'W' i feel. His play on ice was lackluster as well. Team did not show up.. opponent deserved the 'W'. Rawlings tried hard again..but i don't know what's with him & first goals.. still, prob the best Husky on ice tonight.

Is this gm an eye opener or a knockout for the season?... we'll find out soon enough (like tomorrow).
C'mon NU.. LET'S GO!!!
All for now..

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Wow boy’s that was ugly! Over the years, I have been bashed at times for being negative on this thing and critical to the point of contention. As a past player and coach, I have always felt I had some insights on the team due to my proximity to the game. I am at a loss to fully describe tonight's loss at home to a winless team. I am sorry, but the team appears to be talented enough to overcome the freshman jitters and lack of exp. I don't know what's not working but in a 30 game schedule after you play six games (20%) you should be able to smooth out some of your rough edges. I am really worried because the team, to Greg and his staff’s credit is in many ways recruiting for more highly regarded players then it ever has in the past under any coaching tenure.

BUT

The bottom line is the team is undisciplined and there is no excuse for that at this level, PP, PK are simply not good. I understand that it takes time to gel the team. I just don't see this team as clicking very well. The schedule will only get tougher and this is now likly going to be one of the poorer starts in school history. Here is the thing, “yes” we have some injuries and “yes” we will now continue to lose kids early to pro contracts offered in North America, Europe and the Eastern Block, that’s the face of the college game today, but man we have to learn to overcome it. Easier said than done I suppose. Anyway, I am hoping that they snap out of it, and who knows we have a lot of season left, but if you look at the kinds of little things they are not doing, you might just be asking yourself do I really think this team can do anything this year. In my mind I am clearly unsure but in my heart I know the likely answer, a total turn around will likely only result in some form of tolerable mediocrity, which really is kind of what we usually get! Dam, here I go sounding negitive again.

Rossi.. good pts.

Although will say this.. we've had good starts in the past.. only to fizzle down the road. If this is being reversed.. (hopefully).. then its worth bearing the pain right now.

Hopefully they will gel... but Coach needs to come down hard on the undisciplined players.
