Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

The only legacy I can think of prior to the 08-09 season is filling up a section or two at the Garden for Beanpot games, even the championship in 05, and visitor attendance numbers at Matthews for BU games that came close to outnumbering the people in the balcony behind the opposing goalie. Just because there was a banner hung there doesn't equate to this supposed legacy.
Maybe they've slipped in the last few years. I thought they sounded good on TV two nights ago, and I know that the reputation as a good and creative group (if not necessarily as large as some other teams' fanbases) was very real in the early part of the decade.

And FWIW, having been to sold out games at Yost and Matthews, Yost is an absolute snakepit, and also an awesome barn to see a game in.
I've been to Yost too. I'm not saying that Matthews is anywhere near Yost, just that I think the ingredients are such that it could be if it could be filled with NU fans consistently. More than anything else, I think that requires winning.

Well, there were about 15 other people in the entire place, so there was literally no other noise the TV mics could pick up other than the cheering NU students. If I listened closely from the balcony, I might've been able to hear some loud discussion on the ice it was so quiet. Monday would be a better test since the place will be mostly full, and both BC and NU seats are directly below the main camera mics.

Attendance for all home games from the USCHO stats page. Matthews capacity is listed as 5,900.

Somewhere in the middle part of the decade, that was forced to be revised downward by the fire marshal—we'd always known it was wildly optimistic relative to the actual number of seats, and it turns out that you can't squeeze 1500 SRO customers into the building (shocking, I know). I'd assume USCHO hasn't gotten around to updating their figure.

Not sure when, but there was a sellout in '05 at 5402 and the next sellout in '08 was 5407. Talking with Gruppo, 5407 was the max allowed by the city. The change came after the renovations.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Ah, that's right. Still substantially less than 5900.

I forget, why did capacity go down after that? Are the seats wider now so that there are even fewer of them than there were before? Even with a crowd of ~5400, I think 800 to 1000 of those would have been SRO.

I am assuming that Vrolek has ben hurt all year? I forgot all about him. Little guy but seems to make things happen

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Not to burst anyone's bubble but why is having a better attendance percentage better? More people at games means more fans at games. If you bring in 2000 to a 2050 seat stadium, that's worse than bringing 4000 to a 6000 seat stadium. Now if people were turned away at the door that's one thing. But arguing over attendance % is dumb unless it's at 100%.

As for Lowell...Don't know where they learned to count but definitely have never seen more than 2500 people in that building. Been there probably 5 times.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Whenever i've had the chance to visit Tsongas over the years.. they seem to do better with attendance on Saturdays v/s Fridays. Friday attendance is low there i agree.

I have seen 4000+ people in the building a couple times but it was Saturday games (only speaking of NU gms).

One time they had Vader & the Storm troopers (whom i had the pleasure to meet in the elevator, luckily i had my lightsaber :)).. and i think for that gm v/s the Huskies, they had close to 6000.. again, i think it was a Saturday gm. They had a spaceship parked outside.. which i took back to beat traffic thank god. :)

There were 6k in the building for UML vs. BC a couple of Saturdays ago. Of course, about a quarter of those were BC fans.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Om a non-Beanpot note, for the HE playoffs I'm hoping we get either BU or Merrimack. Avoid UNH, BC and Maine (if they get home ice which isn't looking good) at all costs. No problem trying our luck at Agannis or Lawler. We'd probably lose either way but our chances would be much higher.

Vader and all those guys are coming back the 25th vs. PC.
