Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

He's insinuating that we'll be down by a lot and our fans would be leaving by then.

Let's one up it and see how many bc fans there are when we are counting down the last seconds of every minute in the 3rd :)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Oleksiak wins it with 14 seconds left in overtime!

8-8-5 in Hockey East, 10-11-6. Good to get momentum going into Monday night and we have overtaken Maine for 5th in Hockey East.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Last week, I got blasted for my post game comments, again most likely by a vast majority of peeps who have never suited up for perhaps anything more major than a funeral. I guess many felt that I didn’t give Merrimack College their fair shake and tonight they won at NH which is never easy to do so hats off. However, Merrimack Collage a flash in the pan program who is having their best season since a banner year lifted them from the ranks of Div 2 to Division 1 in 1984. I remember it well, as I too, was looking for a place to call home in 1985 and my uncle sat on the NCAA board that season, a summer during which I worked a at the fledgling HE league offices in the basement of a private home in Wakefield, it was a season that almost put Babson College in DIV 1 instead of them, after that season DIV 2 was fairly dismantled and some schools like UMASS Lowell and Merrimack went up and others like Babson went down to Div 3, also to win a national championship at that level. So why the history lesson, because I see Merrimack as playing well with 20 players who will never play a day of pro hockey in North America and NU as doing perhaps the same but grossly underachieving in contrast, OK perhaps Stephan DeCosta actually might get a minor league contract.

I am not saying MC are lucky, they are having a good season, but let’s face it they are not supposed to be building a National powerhouse in hockey, a school of slightly> 2000 enrollment with a endowment made up of little more than what it costs to pave a Wellesley driveway, is anyway you slice it going to both need and make their luck. So I really could not give a fat rat’s ***, as to how they are doing. Newsflash in the event your ears are not on the track if they don’t find a way to field a woman’s program and I do mean relitivly soon we won’t have to worry about them much longer. Ah can you say Title 9. I really dont care, but....

What I am concerned about, is a top tier nationally ranked academic university with a nearly billion $$ endowment whose value of it's physical plant alone may make it perhaps one of the most profitable institutions in the nation, but yet can yet continue to field an un inspired mediocre program. The idea here, I thought is to be building a program that can compete for a national championship year in and year out, just like BU and BC do. We are now into year five or six of what is kind of shaping up to look like of Rich Rodriguez kind of outcome. Yes I know the NU of hockey is not the Michigan of Football, they $$ and media can’t compare them, but step back a bit and it’s a damm good analogy. The issue is not the coaching, it’s the talent. We are simply not recruiting it!

The goal is to build a team that can win and beat bad teams hands down, not have tough looses against Bentley. That is the goal right, if anyone on this blog does not get that, then you need to spend night out at an alumni fund raiser. Oh we tied, we did well, we finished in 5th this year are not any different than the first 60 years the program was in existence when nothing at all was ever expected of it. Who out there does not understand where I am coming from? Tonight, we were lucky to get 2 points against a poor UMASS Lowell team. So, ask yourself, with the pending loss of both Tyler McNeely and Wade McCloud to graduation and pro hockey, who is going to be replacing those points next year? My God, you need to have 3 strong lines that can put up 30 points per line to win a national championship every year with no holes. You need to recruit guys who are not only drafted but are not drafted # 257. Call this what you like, but it’s the truth, and the truth hurts. So if you happy that Merrimack is doing well you’re the kind of kid whose parents likely saved his 5th place trophies and proudly displayed them with some sort of false pride, and that, without a doubt, is just wrong. Yes they are playing better since the slow start, but every year is just another excuse. BC, North Dakota and Michigan dont have to many excuse seasons, or excuse decades for that matter.

So here we are, with the opportunity to end 23 years of futility, down to the stretch run with 3 games against BC, 2 with BU and 2 with UNH. Time to see what they are made of, or if they are made of anything at all. Can they win the big one ?, who knows, it's hockey and clearly anything can happen. However don't bet the house on it.

geez Rossi.. i wonder what you would've said if they had lost tonight.. :) (i do understand your sentiments)..

Wasn't a pretty win tonight, but the goal in OT was. Rawlings (i thought), did not have his best night far as puck control.

Hey, nice crowd Lowell.. i thought it looked close to 5K but i could be wrong. Quiet bunch.. except for the NU section across from us.. not that many, but certainly noticed (and heard) throughout the gm.

On to Goliath on Monday.. Go Huskies!
:)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Gosh, if i had a penny for everytime a former player of ANY sport goes with the old "never suited up line" i could fund the entire NU Hockey program by myself. Especially when its fomer medicore at best players, i would have enough left over to fund Merrimack too.

NU has never been good at hockey. Yeah, nice stretch in the 80s, much like what Merrimack could be building towards here, minus Beanpot trophies. But, to think, everytime I show up at Matthews, I am missing seeing those National Championship banners banners back from the good old days.

Merrimack has a bunch of guys who will go on to play in the minors. Some might even get a cup of coffee at the NHL level.

As for NU, I am still undecided if they have overachieved or underachieved this year. Fact is out of all of their wins, only one has come against a team with a winning record, Merrimack. Time to see what we are made of against good teams back to back to back.

I like where this team is headed, not as much for this year as for next season as I do for next, especially if the main guys on defense come back for another run. Who is going to score, I put my money on the guys not doing it this year. #9, #10, and #11 I think will all come back and have strong years, especially since there minutes will go up. #15 looks like a guy who will put up points, and having #91 for a full season will certianlly help. There is also some talent coming in next years class down the middle, which is this teams biggest weakness, no true playmaking centers, not like those guys grow on tress to begin with anymore.

Future is bright. This team is right where it should be, middle of the pack. If guys come back and dont jump, there could be real growth going forward.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

We can do something this season. Right now it's looking like either BU or Merrimack in round one. Neither team is unbeatable. We clowned BU last time we played but the inexperience of our D killed us and they made them look silly on every rush. We haven't beat any elite teams but we tied Maine which would've been a win if the rule of not having more than 6 on the ice was enforced, tied UNH, lost to BC by one goal (second was an EN) and lost to BU by one goal. All really close games that could've gone either way. I don't think it's out of the question to push our round one series to three games and hope fate gives us a push.

A Beanpot could really bring this team together. Who cares if we only beat Lowell by one, a win is a win. This isn't college football, you don't have to run up the score to get points in some stupid bowl system. Just win.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

i think people need to separate what they expect from the program and what they expect from the team (as in this years edition).

i think last years team pretty much met expectations. they should have made the playoffs, but finishing with a .500 record was about all i expected considering the players lost from the previous season. as for this years team i think finishing 5th-6th sounds about right and if they happen to make it to the garden that will be overacheiving.

from a program standpoint i say thats heading in the right direction. historically NU has had very limited success, a few beanpots and a HE championship. going 3 seasons in a row with a .500 record or better would be an improvement. why would someone expect a program like NU's to go from mediocrity (thats even generous) to winning national championships in 1 or 2 seasons. because they threw a couple million dollars at matthews? the renovations brought the facility to about the same level as others in the conference. recruits are not going to chose NU over BU or BC because we have better facilities (because we don't). if that was the goal the university should have put up the money necessary and built a new arena

i do think Cronin is bringing in more talented players and the program is headed in the right direction. the expectations for next years team should be higher than the expecations for this or last years teams.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

last years team pooped the bed, from the coaching on down. There is no excuse for going from 2nd place and a NCAA tournament, to the last 4 games of the year when all you need is ONE point, and have a better shot % wise to make HOME ICE, then to be out of the playoffs going into the last weekend of the year, and end up in 9th. It was a complete failure.

This years team is right where they should be.

i agree about what happened at the end of last year. my point is about what was expected going into that season. i dont know about you, but 16-16-2 is about all i was expecting form that team
