Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Cody and Randy should be able to play this Friday.
From Sebastien:
"In perspective, earning 5 points out of a possibility of 6 for the regular season series against one of our Hockey East opponent is a very nice accomplishment. Especially 3 out of 4 on the road against the Minutemen. We also were able to create a greater gap between ourselves in 6th position and UMass in 7th as they are 5 points behind us.
A huge game looms for us on Friday night with important playoff implications as we will be hosting the Merrimack Warriors. The Warriors sit 2 positions and 2 points ahead of us in the standings. Being in 4th position, MC holds the last of the coveted home ice playoff spots at this point. In the first two contests of the season against the Warriors, each team earned 2-1 wins on enemy ice in the fall.
We certainly hope our students and fans show up in large number to give us the home ice advantage. On NESN this past Friday, the commentators established that overcoming the crowd was the key to the game for the Minutemen. Our Dog House’s ability to intimidate opponents can be a phenomenal advantage well known across all of college hockey!"

Watching parts of yesterday's Merrimack-UVM gm.. we should be able to skate with them ('Mack). What amazed me was how good they were (and have been lately) on the powerplay. Good movement on the blue line & down low.

Grant it the Vermont 'D' looked atrocious & pretty much let the passing go on all night.. something i'm hoping our D does not let happen. I do have a feeling if NU takes too many penalties.. that might be the difference.

Play disciplined & we can beat this 'Mack team even strength Friday. They have been on a good run lately.. we've not done too bad ourselves.

Let's go DogHouse.. let's go Huskies!

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Chickens, where have you been?

Here and there. Had surgery in Dec. and the Mrs. had surgery at the end of Oct. Been keeping an eye on what's going on. We made it to both UVM games but with our work schedules, the Friday games are tougher and tougher to get to. Still been following the games and such. We're not even going to the Pot this year. (I know, it's sac-religous)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Looking forward to tomorrow's match up. Missed the NU win against 'Mack at Lawler (Volpe).

Merrimack is much (even more) improved since then. In a way, this is going to be as tough a match-up as our gms down the road against the top of HE (BC, UNH). This Warrior team is legit. Friday's gm (win or lose), should serve us well for Monday hopefully. Go Huskies! :)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Big game against the Warriors tomorrow. The Dog House probably won't be as full as last weekend but it will be more full than it has been since the UNH and RPI games early this year. Gotta stay disciplined and if we do I think we will be OK. Rawlings is steaming hot. The thing that holds this team down is finishing. They don't, at least not enough to be a threat in Hockey East. Too many wasted chances from the slot and top of the circles. Only MacLeod is a consistent finisher. Someone else needs to step up and put the puck in the net more than once every other week. We'll be as loud as possible up in the Dog House.

Let's get big momentum going into Monday. Jerseys will be out all over town!

Welcome to the forum..

hopefully we have a good gm Friday regardless of score & the roof at Matthews holds up (just kidding) .. with all the weather lately.. i do wonder about the old barn at times. Regardless, i'd rather be there than under a flat top (pun intended) :)

Why do you think it'll be a smaller showing of (Doghouse) fans than last week? That was awesome to witness. You guys really made the gm enjoyable & (my opinion), got under Dainton's skin a little bit.

No free t-shirts. Ha. But the hockey team is creating a buzz around campus. Only one loss their last 8 and winning 3-0 in front oa a bunch of new fans is great. The basketball team is also on a four game win streak and knocked off CAA #1 and top 35 team in the nation VCU.

It'll be a packed house though with the Beanpot on Monday plus it's a ranked opponent.

Nothing though, compares to last year vs. BU when Rawlings pitched that magical 43 save shutout. Insane atmosphere.

Thanks for the forum welcome. I am hesitant to join new forums cause I'm so used to being a veteran on the other forums I'm on and being a noob is overrated but had to sometime!

In case you didn't see it, don't let the score deceive you. It simply was not that close. Huskies out shot in the game perhaps 2 to 1 and out hustled in the loss, just my opinion. However, they had leads and then kept it close, but in the OT they just plain Sucked! And you have to keep asking yourself is this a program that can only reach the, Oh so fing important top 16 but once a decade. Merrimack is a good team but let’s face it they are not going to win a national championship hell this is their best year since they entered DIV 1, but they are not a top 10 team and thus I guess it is what it is. I could do into depth analysis on the mistakes but why bother. You have to ask yourself, is the issue, the basic talent.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

We handed the game away. Aside from the large power play time wasted in the first period...aside from Merrimack having control most of the game...When it was 2-0, to let them score a second later on a horrible miscue...that determined it was gonna come down to the wire. Can't believe Rawlings who has been sensational gives up that awful goal with less than half a minute to a point. We had the closing goal on our sticks multiple times but again, no finishers. If it's not a perfect pass to the slot or a rebound in front, nobody finishes other than MacLeod. Sometimes you gotta be able to create your own opportunity. We do the first half very well but the second half of that solution is as usual, incomplete.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Very physical game last night. I thought NU looked very good in the first & played with discipline. Then we decided to move away from 5x5 hockey (which at that point was working just fine) & started to emulate the Warriors. Quailer taking a tripping penalty behind the MC net.. ugh, just not needed.

Being up 2-0 & playing undisciplined cost us (The ref -Keenan & crew also let the gm get a bit out of hand). Good for Merrimack.. they kept battling & stayed close. Then seized the opportunity on the multiple powerplays we handed them.

Cucci used to skate for NU.. he is quite a player, can't believe we let him go. I think he had a hat trick last night - ultimate payback.

Rossi i respectfully disagree with you.. i think Merrimack is def a top 10 team this season. They have taken the season series from us, BC, BU & tripped up quite a few others. They are not going to win the Nat'l Championship that i give you.. but they battled hard all night (on the road) & found a way to win. All DNA of a top team.

The OT goal.. yes, it was a softie & actually caught Rawlings by surprise how soft it came in. That's why they coach you to - throw that puck on net.. you never know what will happen. Rawlings has earned a lot of good wins for us & let this one slip by. He will re-group & recover... hopefully the rest of the team can as well.

Our nxt opponent also lost a close one last night so its going to come down to who wants it more Monday.. regardless, great gm to watch last night.. just hard to swallow the last seconds in OT.

I still think the team has improved much since just November & will play some good hockey down the stretch. They actually were playing good hockey the last 7-8 gms. Hit a roadblock last night. They played a very good team last night & almost had 'em. We have a good bunch who will continue to improve.

G'luck against Harvard. Go NU :)

i always first to jump in after a loss.

... irony after last night's gm.
(quoting myself from last wknd ..that not being the ironic part) :)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Just a brutal loss all around. Merrimack really got going after they scored thier first goal. Oleksiak should have stepped up and poked that puck up ice, instead, he falls back, and Merrimack scores a too easy goal to get them going. Secondly, the soft OT game winner was just unacceptable. Our team can not allow these type of goals when points are so precious this time of year and also knowing the schedule for the rest of the year. Not for nothing, how many times does this team have to get burned by a man sitting on the far side and scoring on the back door? Having said that, Merrimack should not have had the opportunity to even handle the puck late in OT. There was a very clear obvious penalty against MC that the referees outright ignored. This lead to the break out and game winning goal. I noticed that our coaches were very upset with the refs, but I think the coaching staff needs to contact Hockey East and Joe Bertangna directly to discuss this game.

The ironic part about the play youre referring to is it was Cucci, who scored the OT winner, that interferred with one of our guys on a scoring chance. Its a tough call because the refs don't want to make a call that decides the game, but in a way the no-call did just that.

..you are absolutely right.

It was at the 40 odd seconds (remaining) mark in OT. Would have been a call any other time in favor of NU, were it not for OT. I think certain HE refs would have called it regardless..

last night's officiating crew did not have their best gm & that was apparent to everyone present.. even MC fans i am sure.

The key is to play with discipline when ahead. We might get another opportunity similar to last night on Monday itself. Hopefully the kids learn fast :).

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

boy, he called that right, huh? but how do you explain only 1475 in the house last night?:confused:

..they're all waiting for BC on the 19th.. :)

In all seriousness.. attendance has been off this season (obvious reason being our record), but i think last night's opponent even more so.. they are a quality team & fun to watch but few (other than a few diehards) want to watch Merrimack. I still think they deserve their ranking & success this season.

they certainly do and thanks for the response. good luck to you guys monday......hope to see you the following monday but what ever happens, it will be fun hearing the NU section at the Garden

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Less students last night but it was way louder than vs UMASS because it was the diehards who understood how important the game was. Also, Hockey East has to have some of the worst hockey referees I've ever seen. It makes watching the NHL a treat discipline wise and that's bad. Horribly inconsistent, giving players the softest penalties...how are these kids going to fare in the NHL if they expect to get a joke call every time they flop? Also, how many times are we going to see them say the goalie has the puck when it's two inches to the left of him? Honestly, if I was HE Commissioner I'd be embarrassed for last night (and the Maine game for allowing a goal with 7 players on the ice).

Also found it funny the MC players grabbing their jerseys and gesturing to the NU fan section...look we know you haven't even made an NCAA Tournament since 1988 but please, learn to handle success.
