Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

What a lackluster effort tonight from the hosts. Vermont came out as i thought they would. After a tough loss at home themselves.. they responded quite well.

Rawlings did not have his best night (first UVM goal was as weak a goal i've seen him give up all season), the 2nd Vermont goal was a beauty (horrendous D on our part)..

NU had their chances (Dongara had a breakaway..but could not capitalize). Vermeesch came so close, i thought they would review that.. MacLeod as well.. but overall team intensity was missing.

Let's repay the visitors tomorrow & salvage 2 pts. Go for the corners with Madore.. any corner! Let's go team!

Very disappointing effort to start a weekend where if things fell correctly we could have been right in the home ice race. I thought Quailer played a very solid game but other than that the team played poorly.

Tonight was the third straight game that Rawlings has been shaky. I would go with Witt tomorrow.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

I actually thought the team played fairly well. Besides those first two goals i felt NU controlled most of that game. If it wasn't for the play of Madore and maybe some bad puck luck we could have had 4 goals. Like NU, this Vermont team is not as bad as their record.

That being said its still a disappointing loss. These are games the team needs to win if they're going to climb the standings. If they get the W tonight and split the season points its not a disaster.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

That's more like it.. i wouldn't call it a dominating performance.. but close. Northeastern outworked & out hustled Vermont the entire gm.

Finally paid off in the 3rd. I am actually glad Coach went with Rawlings.. we need him to be solid down the stretch & i am sure he wanted another crack at it after last night. Earned a well deserved shutout.

The entire team stepped up tonight. Officiating was a bit 'off' ..(is Shea from Vermont?) :). Perhaps Witt gets the nod for Harvard. Nice effort tonight Huskies!

Saw Wade at symphony market last night getting a 5 hr energy drink before the game.... Talk about instant advertising... he was the only one who scored! Go Huskies!

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Gotta love the "C Low" chant after he had the UVM player pinned down, but Shea in particular was making bad calls all night.

I'd say it was a pretty dominant game by Northeastern's defense, not so much our offense. Defense absolutely shut down the UVM offense. We allowed only 1 or 2 legitimate scoring chances, and were able to clear away any presence in our side quickly. Rawlings never got tested but was solid, good rebound control. I was glad to see him back, giving up a shot he never saw and a breakaway goal can't entirely be blamed on him (didn't see the first goal). However, our offense needs to play more unified, it's very frustrating to see just one player of ours in the zone with the puck and no support. They pass it a lot without putting shots on goal which won't work for a lot of teams. The offense made no real mistakes or turnovers, and with better bounces they might have scored another goal or two.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Good win last night. 19 passes Jim Fahey on the all-time NU points list. Congrats to Wade, a nice accomplishment for a solid 4-year, first line player.

If I were Cronin, I would healthy scatch Veermersch on Wednesday against Harvard. How many times does he have to turnover the puck before he realizes he can't deke through three guys at this level? His refusal to back-check and play defense only when he feels like it has led to his team-low -11 plus/minus and is infuriating to watch.

On a more positive note, hopefully Rawlings can build up some confidence with the shutout. You gotta love 17 save shutouts...haven't seen too many of those at my time at NU. I would still probably go with Witt against Harvard which is a pretty meaningless game, so Rawlings will be well rested for a big game against Maine on Saturday night.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

On a side note.. what's up with the fans at Matthews? (as in.. where are they???)

We're 3-1 to start 2011 & it seems the crowds have thinned quite a bit. Perhaps it was the weather last wk (far as alums).. but least on campus i think the Doghouse, RAs, others who drummed up the hockey team/ fan support can perhaps kick start things a bit.

I expect another light crowd for Harvard.. but let's get it going for Maine & beyond!

Athletics dept/ tic office/ Doghouse leaders.. you guys listening? :) (a concerned Husky fan)
Peace

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

..those polls don't matter right now anyway.

Harvard at NU tomorrow.. does anybody care?

Trap game? I'd rather beat them in the Beanpot than tomorrow. Of course i'd rather we beat them both times.. but that may not happen given our inconsistent play.

Harvard is winless in the Ivy League so far & are coming in with a 4 gm losing streak. I think they will be trying to get out of that slump.

Tomorrow HU 3 NU 3 (strange feeling HU might even win it).. but then i think we play a good, solid gm against Maine Saturday.

Sure hope the team is not looking ahead.. just me :)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

What does everyone think about the change in the top line between Friday and Saturday? Do you think it is a permanent switch or just a one game change to send a message after the lack of production on Friday? Personally I liked the switch because I think the Quailer-JDaniels-Vermeersch can skate with most of the other top lines around (and this is presumably our top line for next year too), especially when you consider how well Bitetto and Eibler have played. I also think it creates a big mismatch in our advantage when we can play our senior line against other team's 2nd lines. My feeling is that it was a one game, maybe two game experiment, but when Maine comes calling this weekend the senior line will be the top line again.

I think the Huskies should be able to handle Harvard tomorrow night, and I think we should be able to give Maine a good game too.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

I liked the change in the line. We were a different team v/s Vermont Sat. Of course our D was solid. We'll need that Saturday (and tomorrow!).

Yeah it's ugly right now as far as fan support goes. Hopefully the Beanpot can get people excited on campus, but the students (minus the diehards of course) can be such a fickle group to please. Either you win or they don't show up.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Talking about winning.. all of Northeastern's wins so far have come in conference (HE). We do not have a single win out of conference. Remember the good old Holy Cross, Bentley etc gms earlier in the season..? I don't either.. :) (but hopefully our club does & not want to go there again).

The Crimson, on the other hand, do not have a single win 'in' conference. They've earned their few 'W's so far.. all out of conference. Hopefully they do not add to that tonight. I know Ted Donato is in the spotlight (unfavorably), over in Cambridge & is on the hot seat. This game means a lot more to them (him) & Harvard will come out flying.

Go Huskies!

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Well.. came out flying they (HU) sure did.. glad Rawlings was up to the task.

I can see now the rationale of starting him since he'll be the go to guy in the 'Pot. This way he gets a good look at Harvard & hopefully can repeat (not necessarily a shutout) but with a 'W' on the big stage. For now.. 2nd shutout in 2 games.. nice going.

I thought Quailer's goal in the 1st with just 50 odd secs left was a big momentum changer. Harvard was outshooting NU 2 to1 until then..

Harvard was (is) a fiesty bunch!

I've never seen Beiga get so aggressive so many times. I think Ted Donato might have lost his touch (he's a great guy, but i think HU might need some new blood..).

Northeastern was fortunate a few times in front of net as Harvard can't seem to score right now.. even if the puck just sits in the goalie crease. However.. same can be said about our chances tonight.. that could have been a 6-0 NU win.

I don't think we were as sharp, but got away due Harvard's lackluster skating.. Maine will not be so kind. It's nice to go into the wknd with a 'W'. Pimm looks great last couple games. Dongara is fun to watch always.

Big gm coming up Saturday.. we need that discipline back, then i think we'll be okay.
Nice going NU :).

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Any season ticket holders get their 'pot tickets yet? I feel like it was so long ago I got charged...

nevermind - they came yesterday! Let's go Huskies tonight vs. the black bears!

the dogs need to come out swinging in the first period. start strong, end strong. let's get the W tonight.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Missed tonight's gm..

tying a quality Maine team (good).. then i read we were up 2-0 & gave that up.. (bad).. then i read we came back in the 3rd down 3-2, to tie it (good). Then i came upon the part where it said Qualier got a misconduct penalty in OT (bad).. but we got a point out of this one (good).. but we should have never let it come to this at home (bad).. wait.. we're 4-1-1 in 2011 (oh, good !) :) Let's keep marching!..

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

First goal by Maine was ridiculous, there should have been a TMM call there, mix up between the goalie coming out and players led to Maine having the extra man with the goalie in. Having said that, a good game I thought, certainly good to tie against Maine.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Good tie against a formidible Maine team. We had the momentum after those 2 quick strikes in the 2nd but lost it after Fyrer helped Maine tie it up by giving them a 5 on 3 and another PP right after. On another note, can anyone explain to me why Hewkin is still playing, especially in key situations and on the PK? Sometimes he seems to be lost out there and turns the puck over half the time he handles it.
