Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Our nxt opponent will come out flying the first 10 mins especially.. given their performance over the weekend. We came out flat ourselves Friday.. but looked very good on Saturday.

If we can match the intensity Wednesday, (w/out unnecessary penalties), might be a pretty good hockey game.. even if its mid-week & the game thread for this matchup is non-existent. Go Huskies :)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

From Sebastien Laplante:
"Our young D-men played extremely well throughout the weekend; Anthony Bitetto and Luke Eibler played very well together as they have all year and continue to look more and more comfortable in D-1 Hockey. Jamie Oleksiak also continues to improve as he nears his 18th birthday on December 21st. He also continues to bring unprecedented NHL “scout-traffic” in every rink we play as the experts continue to predict he will go in the first round in the June 2011 Entry level draft. We even had two NHL General Manager at Friday night’s home game."

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Oops.. did not realize there already was a NU-BU gm thread (i'll try delete the one i started few days back).. although the other out there is not much of a gm thread either.. i'll just re-post my comments here..

..short rest for both, NU coming off a much needed 'W' but still no consistency. BU with a great start to the season, but exhausting weekend with no points.

BU with one win in their last 8 gms..(several ties).. i think they're due..

Wednesday gm..yeesh! I'll be at the one(s) in March. G'luck Huskies!
:)

If we are a to be 2nd half team this season (fingers crossed).. hopefully we can continue play well, especially heading into winter break .. (would've loved to see this early matchup, too much work mid-wk). Play disciplined..play 5x5. Go NU :)

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

From NU:
Northeastern rookie defensman Jamie Oleksiak has been named to the preliminary roster for the 2011 U.S. National Junior Team for the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship taking part in Buffalo, N.Y. from Dec. 26 – Jan. 5.

The roster was unveiled at a press conference at HSBC Arena in Buffalo. The 29-man preliminary roster will participate at training camp in preparation for the 2011 World Jr. Championship. The training camp will take place in Albany, Troy, Rochester and Jamestown, N.Y. from Dec. 16-23 and will include pre-tournament games against Rensselaer's men's ice hockey team (Dec. 19), the Czech Republic (Dec. 21) and Norway (Dec. 23).

The final 22-player United States roster will be announced exclusively on USAHockey.com prior to Team USA’s pre-tournament game against Norway on Dec. 23.

Oleksiak is the first player in Northeastern history to be named to the preliminary roster for the 2011 U.S. National Junior Team. He is not, however, the first person in Northeastern history to associated with the national junior squad.

Head coach Greg Cronin was the Associate Head Coach of USA Hockey’s World Junior team in 1996 and ’97. The 1996 squad won the silver medal at the World Championship in Geneva, Switzerland and placed fifth the following year. It marked the best back-to-back showings for the United States at the time.

They got it wrong. Willie Levesque represented for NU in this tournament in the late 90's. He played and was the roomate of the goalie from that team that wears red and white on comm ave and who went on to be the #1 pick in the draft for that team on that Long Island in NY that never wins. Now maybe Willie did not make the preliminary roster, but he was on the team. Perhaps they did not do preliminary rosters at that point.

bu 5 nu 4 final

listening to the 3rd period on radio.. sounded like a good (but crazy gm). late penalty cost us again.. announcers were saying that nu did not take that many penalties though.. but timing is everything. what happened to rawlings? hurt? poor play?.. hopefully there is something good going forward from all these gms. 1 goal (loss) gms this season are just a killer for nu so far.. hopefully we can turn it around.

well, happy holidays everyone.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

This comment showed up in the BU newspaper live blog during the game, any truth to it?

[Comment From HuntingtonAve Insider]
Heard an ugly hazing scandal is about to break at the huskies. you guys hear nething/

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

four straight goals... only 9 saves from 13 BU shots... I'd put that in the suck column.

..ugh, that's too bad. He'd been pretty solid this past wknd against Merrimack. Probably a good thing it is time for break. Just reading.. blowing a 2-0 lead & coming back from a 2 goal deficit, all in one game... not a bad gm for those who witnessed i'm sure. Tough to give up the last one on a late powerplay (again)..

Unlike past seasons.. if we are to do anything positive (& i do believe we have a decent team).. pray it take place post December. I know what i want for Christmas. :)

I was there. You guys skated circles around BU for 90% of the game. I doubt Rawlings got hurt. He looked shaky and got pulled IMO. Tough loss for NU and fortunate win for BU.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

yargh, well i was entertained and had fun for most of the game... we look light years better than we did 2 months ago, let's hope that trend continues.

Sounds like we're getting screwed on bad bounces and bad luck, hopefully we get some more fortune and start winning some one goal games of our own.

Rawlings was due for a bad game, he's played well up until now, a slump game was expected. From what I heard and read, we were the far dominant team for most of the game, which makes the outcome all the more frustrating (though against BU the default result is a loss). I hope they don't let this loss get into their heads and move forward positively.

Two major pluses from the game: We scored on our first five-on-three, and we only take 3 penalties

Also major plus: our next 5 games are UMass, UML, UVM (x2), and Harvard, and all but the UMass game is at home. A solid showing through those games would be great, if we could pick up all those Hockey East points we'd be in a solid place.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Overall it was a good game played by NU. We went into the agganis and took over the flow of the game. We doubled BU's shots. Aside from about a 10-minute stretch from the end of the 1st and into the 2nd period, we dominated the game. Of the 4 goals BU scored in that 10-minute window, Guzior was on the ice for 3 of them, and he was way out of position for 2 of them. Rawlings could have made some big saves for us, but most of the goals they scored happened after he had made the initial save. We went up 2-0 and then decided to stop playing defense and allowed them to crash the net. I think Cronin pulled him partially due to sub-par play and partially to tell the defense to wake up, and it worked.

Quailer continues to look better and better each week. He is great on the PK, and his 2nd line has improved nicely too. The only problem I have with the 2nd line is that Vermeersch constantly tries to make moves around defensemen instead of passing the puck and it continues to result in turnovers.

The biggest disappointment of the first half has to be Ferriero, and the biggest surprise has easily been Oleksiak. I have also been very pleased with this freshmen class as a whole, and I expect the team to continue to improve in the New Year.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

From Sebastien Laplante:
We had a rare mid-week game against BU last night at Agganis Arena as I had shared with you earlier this week. Unfortunately, the end-result was not a reflection of the game as many observers would tell you we were dealt an unfair ending. However, no one said hockey was always fair so we’ll have to work harder and find a way to play a full 60 minutes, which ultimately was the cause for our shortcoming. We took control of the game in the early parts with a very aggressive forecheck. We were able to sustain several attacks and cycle-possession leading to several very good scoring chances. Brodie Reid (Delta, BC) would open the score for us at the 6:49 mark on a NHL-quality shot! The play started when Anthony Bitetto (Island Park, NY) pinched in from his blue line spot to keep the puck in the zone. Anthony moved it to Mike McLaughlin (Seaforth, ON) who skated aggressively behind the net and towards the corner to create a passing lane in order to find a well positioned Brodie in the slot. Brodie received the puck on his backhand, with the stick skill of a natural goal scorer, he adroitly pulled it to his forehand and let go a rocket top shelf on the glove-side. Brodie was terrific last night multiplying the scoring chances. Brodie has been spending lots of time on his own working on his skating, his edges and agility skating, as well as his shot. His performance last night, including his goal, is a direct result of his individual efforts. It was Brodie’s first goal of the season while on a 5 on 5 situation on the year. His first tally had come on our first game of the season at Providence late in the game while our goaltender was pulled for an extra attacker.Shortly after Brodie’s goal at the 8:00 minute mark, Garrett Vermeersch (Macomb, MI) would double up the lead on a rebound from a Randy Guzior’s shot. Steve Silva (Tyngsboro, MA) had found “Guz” coming down from his right point position and Randy had taken a back-hand “spinarama” shot on the BU’s goalie’s pads. It was Garrett’s 2nd goal of the season, and second in 2 games. Even though we started like lions as illustrated by the shots which were 14-1 at one point in our favor. However, it appears we let up the pressure and allowed BU to get back in the game on a couple of costly mistakes. The first goal came on our own odd-men rush when one of our players missed the BU net wide on a slap shot. That slap shot jump started BU’s own odd-men rush which led to their first goal. Their second goal came after BU had us pinned in our zone for a while. One of their forward had changed and his replacement charged into the zone. He would get the puck at the blue line at full speed charging towards our flat-footed defenseman. He used our D-man as a screen shooting the puck, got his own rebound and went around Rawlings to find the bottom of the net. End of 1st period, NU2-BU2. Our second period did not start on the right foot as we allowed BU to score 2 more goals in a 47 seconds span as the Terriers were now on top 4-2. It was then that we decided to play the way that had gotten us the 2-0 lead. We quickly started to apply the same forecheck we had applied earlier in the game to regain the advantage in puck possession. Cutting down on turnovers and valuing each possession. We outshot the Terriers 16 to 8 in the second period while Garrett Millan played very well in front of the BU net. With 2:04 left in the second, Braden Pimm (Ft St. John, BC) would solve Millan also scoring his second of the game on a rebound shot from the glass behind the BU net. Cody Ferriero (Essex, MA) had moved the puck to Jamie Oleksiak (Toronto, ON) who took a good shot who reflected off the backboard. End of 2: NU3-BU4.That goal would motivate us to come back from the intermission determined to get the lead back. After taking the play to them, BU was forced to take 2 penalties on the same play giving us a 2-men advantage for a full 2 minutes. Wade MacLeod (Coquitlam, BC) would tie the score at 4 on a beautiful wrist shot after several good scoring chances and good puck movement. Assists were given to Brodie Reid and Anthony Bitetto. Tyler McNeely (Burnaby, BC) did not collect an assist but did a good job providing a screen in front of Millan. We had several more chances to score, including a point blank shot from Garrett Vermeersch, but no luck. The Terrier-skaters did a very good job all night of getting themselves in the shooting lanes blocking several shots before they made it to Millan. We attempted 88 shots on Millan on the night with 41 making it to him.BU would score the game winner on a PP of their own with 3:27 left in the last period on a nifty play from behind the goal line. The main lesson from Wednesday night’s game is never to change your style, or drift away from your game plan, when you take a lead. Evidently, we did Wednesday night after we took the 2-0 lead, cutting corners and trying to play an “easier” game. We paid a heavy price for it.Garrett Vermeersch continued his strong play, which is direct consequence of his enhanced dedication to work ethic. Cody Ferriero also played a strong game after watching the last Merrimack game from the stands. Our 3 freshmen D’s, Bitetto, Eibler and Oleksiak, all played top minutes in this game and looked terrific for us overall. Our next game is not until January 7th as we will travel to Amherst to face the Minutemen. Before I say goodbye, I must correct a mistake made on the press release announcing Jamie Oleksiak’s selection to the USA World Junior Selection Camp. Jamie is not the first Husky to be selected. Another illustrious alumnus, Willie Levesque, actually played in the 2000 WJC. We apologize for the oversight. Just like Willie was 10 years ago, we wish Jamie the very best hoping he will also be selected on the final roster which will be announced December 23rd.

I've got to say I like Laplante's messages, they're a nice insight into what the coaching staff is seeing. An overall strong game by most of our team, with plenty of time off to practice and work on improving our game. Our next games are UMass, UML, UVM (x2), and Harvard. No reason not to explode on offense in that stretch.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

I am certain that this young team is improving! That's really all we can ask. I ordered my Beanpot tickets today. Anyway, Happy Holidays to the lot of you. See you in January.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

First Semester Analysis of Fr.
Luke Elber-pleasant surprise. Was to play another year of juniors until Jake Newton left.
Anthony Bitetto- very talented, has been playing better and better.
Jamie Oleksiak- fantastic potential.
Jake Hoefler-have not seen him play. Was supposed to red shirt.
Braden Pimm- slow start has been playing much better lately.
Brodie Reid- Best frosh forward so far.
Cody Feriero- Teams best for checker. Like Pimm, has been playing better as the season goes on. Scoring will come. Ron Dongara- exciting talent, terrific speed. Needs to shoot more.
Clay Witt-I hope to see him play more as the season progresses.

Eibler and Bitetto have been increasingly impressive, they've cut down on the penalties that hurt us early in the season and their offensive increase has coincided with our strong last few games. If they keep playing strong they could make up for Newton's lost production. It also helps us that we could run 2 d-men on a PP and still have the scoring threat from the blue line. Oleksiak's added some nice offense as well, and has been solid on defense, despite doubts due to his young age.

Hoefler will likely not touch the ice again, he was on for 2 shifts against Merrimack, got a TMM penalty, and didn't play again.

Pimm and Ferriero have been great backcheckers, lots of skill there. I think Ferriero's disappointed in that we expected a guy like Kreider who could put up lots of goals and we got a more 3rd or 4th line checker with some scoring potential instead.

Reid's been great, nice to see him play so well after the winding journey he took to get here. I hope Reid stays a few years, if we does he could hit 100 career points.

Witt's been solid, I bet we see him in the Harvard game in January. If Rawlings does end up leaving after this year we'll have a very capable backup.

All in all another solid freshmen class, definitely one of the best recently. I think we've gotten some solid classes the last few years, with Quailer, McLaughlin and Tuckerman in 08, J. Daniels, Rawlings, and Vrolyk last year, and now this group for this year.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

I have been very impressed with Rob Dongara as well & did not see his name mentioned in the (freshmen) names below.

Anyway, seems every shift... 100% hustle. Just a treat to watch & solid worker.

Now i will go back to my holiday slumber.. seasons greetings & drive safely all :).
