Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Sure, you can look at the OOC, but when it comes down to the end of the season, only Hockey East games count. We lost badly in our 4 OOC games because we have only one upperclassman d-man, a few upperclassmen forwards, and we played undisciplined, uncoordinated hockey. For whatever reason we played well against the Hockey east games. We've grown by leaps and bounds in terms of coordinating our gameplay from the Maine series on, and I'd argue we're poised to make some noise in Hockey East. How we play in this series will be a determining factor in whether or not we can actually make that jump into the middle of the pack.

And therein lies the difference. The OOC games don't matter for NU because they have no hope of making NCAAs as an at-large. Merrimack does. Therefore, the OOC games do matter for them.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

I'm going to be boring and predict a spilt with both teams winning at home.

Something like:

NU 3-2 on Friday and MC 4-2 on Saturday

Barton/Da Costa/Todd is one of the better lines in the league (33 combined points this year) and I'm interested to see how our defense will handle them.

While Merrimack is by no means a one-line team, I think that they are not nearly as deep as some of the HE teams we've played so far (UNH, BC, Maine). Therefore I'd like to see Cronin stack the defensive pairings and put Oleksiak with Element/Eibler/Bitetto and put them out on the ice every time 'Mack sends out their first line.

For those who are going to North Andover on Saturday, are you buying tickets in advance?

The last 4 years I've gone to Lawler and never had a problem getting a ticket at the door but the home team has never been ranked before.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Capacity of the Lawls has been severely deminished for this game. One side is now all chair-back seats, and they're replacing the benches on the other side with chairs over Christmas break. However, in order to get a jump on it they've torn out half the bleachers on the other side already. My guess is the place holds around 2,000 right now. It might be a good idea to buy in advanced.

And as for OOC...I never said they mattered...I said they can still be a good indicator of how a team is and what kind of fortitude they have. And losing three straight to Atlantic Hockey, including putting one point on the board against Bentley and Niagara each at home is very very weak.

That being said they've played hockey east teams tight as of late and certainly won't be a push-over win. I just don't see Merrimack losing at Matthews this weekend where teams like Niagara and Bentley have come away with wins.

I was going to buy at the door before Salvo1017 mentioned the 'redesign' on the seats ongoing. Your best bet..buy online, there's a $2 fee so your student/youth ticket will come to $12 approx (as opposed to $10 at the door). Not bad... section 11 is your best bet (more or less near ctr ice). g'luck

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

i think its funny that we have a couple merrimack fans in our thread beating their collective chest, that certainly hasn't happened in the past. i dont recall anyone saying anything negative about your team, in fact i believe merrimack will finish ahead of NU this season and i also think their success is good for the league. i'll agree with the rest of the NU posters by saying the team has been playing better as of late and it should be a good couple of games.

Bench side is all general admission so you can move around to your liking. 8, 9, 10 have been ripped out.

And I didn't intend my comment to be "beating my chest". I think these games are going to be hard fought and a great series to watch. Can't wait for the game at Matthews tomorrow, my fav. HE arena.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Key test tonight.. gotta get it done at home. Ranked team or not.. got to get the home advantage back. Worry about the road tomorrow :) Let's go NU!

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

NU should make it three wins over Merrimack in 2010. The first was last February (5-1 at North Andover). The present Merrimack team is not as good as the one that lost to NU in February, and NU's freshmen are not playing, like frosh and NU has their best forward, Justin Daniels, healthy again.

you love posting about this kid, whats with the fixation?

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

A certain player who took his ball and went down the green line when he didn't get what he wanted says Hello!

that freshmen outside of scoring in the first game of the season has spent more time in the box and stuck to the end of the bench then he has it doing anything else. We did that green line team a favor so far.

Pass out some more of that funny stuff at the door tonight. Thanks...

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

We came out flat in the first period & deserved the final result. Congrats to Merrimack.

I will say this.. we looked pretty good for periods of the 2nd & very good in the 3rd.. (better than 'Mack, in my opinion), but could not overcome the deficit.

If we can play like we did in the 2nd & especially 3rd periods tonight; - tomorrow.. we can still split the weekend. Anything else & Merrimack is too strong of a club & will sweep. Lack of discipline (another PP goal to the opponent)..is killing us this season.

Barton for 'Mack looked very good. Cannata made some outstanding saves. Matthews has been very good to opponents this season..

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

NU looked great in the 3rd. Their approach to the stretch is interesting...they just ignore it and play 5 on 4, it created some chances for you, but man that's an awful lot of confidence to have in Rawlings.

But they did the same thing that Harvard did and BC did in the final few minutes, shot yourself in the foot with the penalty.

I was sad to not see Cucci get on the board, scoring against your former team must feel great haha

Should be a good one tonight.

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

If the road is where some of our luck lies this season.. so be it.

Nice to snap Merrimack's home unbeaten streak. I like Lawler only because you are so close to the action & one can appreciate the hustle that goes on out there (both teams). I thought both goalies played good.

Split wknd.. take the 2.. on to BU who will be a wounded tiger after getting swept this wknd. No easy task but nice to go there with a 'W'. I gotta long drive.. night all.

Nice job NU :).

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

Now having seen NU twice, I think it's safe to say that Oleksiak is going to be a player when he gets stronger. He has terrific wheels for a guy who is 6'7"--and having seen 6'5" Kyle Bigos making dangle move coming across the offensive blue line--that says something. In any event, once the big guy adds some bulk he will be an absolute manchild.

McNeely, MacLeod and Silva played really well on the weekend and if this team turns it around--they are the guys to get it done. Few teams as a whole can come into Lawler and outwork MC--but NU really competed all night-- kudos to the Huntington Hounds...

Re: Northeastern Huskies 2010-2011 Season Thread

A solid weekend, Northeastern outplayed Merrimack in the 2nd and 3rd Friday, and played a solid consistent effort on Saturday. Rawlings looked excellent this week.

I was correct in my predictions of Quailer and Daniels, that line is getting better every week, even Ferriero's playing a solid back-checking role, all he needs to do is get on the scoresheet again. I'm also impressed with Oleksiak, he was maneuvering quite well despite his size, and cut through some defenders this weekend.

I hope Northeastern can take this solid play into Agganis on Wednesday and play well. That's all I can ask for against BU. A few predictions for Wednesday:

-Rawlings will play well again. He's been solid all year, and I think that'll continue

-Ferriero gets at least a point. Despite not getting a lot of points, I've been pretty impressed with him recently. He's a great forechecker, has an excellent shot, and is on an excellent line. I also think Vermeesch gets a point, he played well and I think he's due to start racking up some points.

Brodie Reid was not available for Friday’s game. He had a good gaome last night. He runs the NU offense like Justin Daniels. Both see the ice very well and are excellent passers. They are similar to a point guards in BB, they find the open player and deliver the puck. Now if NU can only find a few finishers that can locate the back of the net. Jamie Oleksiak is listed as 6’7’’and 240 pounds; he turns 18 this month! Hope the Bruins draft him next spring so we can enjoy watching him play in Boston for the next 20 years. Merrimack has a great player in DaCosta; two excellent lines; good goal tending and D men. Mark Dennehy and his assistants deserve a lot of credit.

Well GoNU5, NU was MORE than equal to MC this weekend. After 1st period Friday, the Huskies took it to MC. Rawlings is going to steal you a couple of wins this year. Disappointed that MC couldn't keep a clean slate at Lawler, but nice job by the Hounds. Continued good luck (until they play MC again!)
