North Dakota 2016 Off-Season Thread

Re: North Dakota 2016 Off-Season Thread

Actually, here is one that will explode the Gopher mind. If they just recruited from the state of California, they would definitely be better than 5th in the state of MN. :):)

Re: North Dakota 2016 Off-Season Thread

I want to apologize to the dedicated UND fans here. Having played the game for a good portion of my life both in the US and overseas, I have strong opinions about USA hockey, and I realize some of them will be challenged by those who disagree. However, I'd like to backtrack a bit and say that my personal opinion and commitment to USA hockey should not overshadow the fine work of Coach Berry and the commitment and tenacity of the players and coaches of the UND hockey team in winning the national championship. It's very difficult to win a NCAA national championship and it's a tremendous accomplishment.

So it's fine for you to go take some players spot overseas? What about the natives of that country? You just swooped in and took away the opportunity for home-grown talent. I'm sure you didn't feel nearly as angry taking their spot as you do about UND giving Canadians the "rightful roster spots" of Americans.

Re: North Dakota 2016 Off-Season Thread

Minnesota has a marvelous high school hockey program that feeds D1 programs all over the country, and having 5 D1 teams in the state is very impressive. AND (while I'm being nice and possibly laying the foundation for my expulsion from the Sioux Order), I've know a lot of very knowledgeable gopher hockey fans who know how to have fun with the rivalry stuff. A lot of them.

But some are so fragile (I don't think it's arrogance, I think its fragility) that they will grab onto just about any excuse, no matter how pitiful, and they cause all gopher fans to have this rep as a result.

Sioux fans, on the other hand. You can bet your Aunt's Taurus that the next Siuox fan you meet will be handsome, intelligent, and modest to a fault. I suppose if NDSU got a D1 hockey program and managed to beat UND several times, Sioux fans would start to behave like those few gopher fans, but I like to think we are made of stouter stuff.

Just a few thoughts, since we are on the subject. Could I be wrong? Ahhh, no.

From a poster at ss.com so take it for what it's worth:

I have heard from a very good source that Nick Schmatlz is indeed coming back next year. Apparently he and Gage will be roommates. It won't be official for a while because he doesn't want to go public yet.

This source must be a real close to Nick if he's making public what Nick does not want made public.

But as you said, ice, for what it's worth.

A ton of clown shoes on that site.

Re: North Dakota 2016 Off-Season Thread

Great. We finally win another title, after 16 years, and our reward is to re-fight the "Canadian" argument. Happens every time. MN can't trash the play so they gotta trash the player.

I have heard many Gopher fans say it's more important the Gophers win with Minnesotans than win national championship games without them.

So these "many" fans would be OK with never winning another national championship? IIRC it was a guy from Grand Forks, ND that scored the GWG in 2002 or 2003, and a guy from Europe that scored the GWG in the other year. It has been 37 years (and counting) since an all Minnesota team won a national championship. These "many" fans would be OK with that?

Those same fans never lost a recruit they really wanted.

I guess those fans will be petitioning the school to give back the national title that Thomas Vanek was so instrumental in helping them win. After all, not only was he not Minnesotan, he wasn't even North American! :D

Those fans are few and far between and is that somehow supposed to make anyone feel bad about those titles? For every overly provincial Gophers fan that likes to crow about locals on the roster there's a Fawker that will wring their hands over it like Pavlov. Here's your halo. :)

We're just removing the rivalry rust as we prep for next year and a return to UND-UM on the ice! :) Fans have to stay in shape over the off season too. :D
