North Dakota 2012-13

Re: North Dakota 2012-13

This weekend's sweep over UMD was huge! With Karv back, our overall game has stepped up. passing was outstanding especially Saturday's game. A shame that both teams played better than the officials but oh well. I was also really impressed with UND's discipline. not taking the bait from the typical UMD extra curriculars and finishing the game off!

You guys picked up 43 minutes in penalties on the weekend. Then again, that is showing unusual discipline for the Whioux . . .

Hmmmm...what?

Re: North Dakota 2012-13

did you watch the game?
No. My post was meant tongue in cheek. Faux confusion if you will. I didn't need to see these games. I know what you're speaking to with your comment I bolded. However...Idalski himself has said "we play a physical game." I wouldn't disagree with him on that.

Re: North Dakota 2012-13

Yes both UND and UMD seem to play physical. I thought (for once, finally) the Green & White held their composure better then the Bulldogs. Seemed like the 3rd period all UMD do is go for the body and not the puck which is sometimes a UND trait!

Re: North Dakota 2012-13

With the talent on the Sioux how is it they are .500 in the WCHA. My guess. Coaching.
Not sure I would agree with you assessment on talent, after the Lams there really isn't a lot of talent on the team compared to other top teams. That will be pretty apparent next season when the Lams are gone, that said their coaching isn't all that top notch either. Personally I think he tends to burn out the Lams reducing their effectiveness.

Besides the Lams, at present I think they have an edge in talent over a few other WCHA teams. One thing I honestly think has hurt UND is penalties. Too many, too often and too often of an undisciplined nature. I think the Lams have reduced their own effectiveness in this way. They need to be on the ice for UND's best chances of winning consistently. I think they do their opponents nothing but favors with their fairly frequent trips to the box.

Before the current coach arrived, UND couldn't even see .500 from where they were. I agree that UND has talent, but most of it is at forward. Strong offense, very average defense.

I think North Dakota has top end talent besides the twins. Karvinen, Jakobsen and Dufault all impress me quite a bit. What they seem to lack to me is any depth. No one else on the team has more than 8 points and when watching them, Becca Kohler and Tori Williams are pretty much the only ones I've even noticed. Some of that likely stems from only watching them against the Gophers, who have made a lot of players disappear this year. It's possible that some of it stems from a lack of ice time, as my impression is that those seven plus Slavin and LaShomb are on the ice constantly. So, someone might step up given more of a chance, but I have no idea who it might be.

They could also use some better goaltending.

Coach Idalski underestimated the need for high end goaltending.

Re: North Dakota 2012-13

Discipline (penalties, defense) and consistent goaltending have plagued this team for over a year now. Lexie Shaw is coming in next year from Honeybaked and Ive heard good things about her. I would say the coaching staff is well above par- check credentials. The Lams can bail us out or lose it for us, and I'll take my chances..

Discipline starts at the top. Lams have been undisciplined since they got to UND and it has hurt the team on more than one occasion yet they still get double shifted on a regular basis. Coach needs to have a set and sit their butts on a shift or 2 after a stupid untimely penalty. Probably to late for that now as he should of put the foot down right away when they first arrived in Grand Forks.

Credentials are one thing, but Idalski's ego overrides common sense and the ability to lead and treat the team as a unit. Not all players are treated equal, and I'm not referring to ice time. The Lams have hurt the team more than they have helped. I find it quite fitting that U of MN won the title after ridding themselves of the twins.

My intention is not to speak ill of the twins, they are who they are. Idalski attempted to take a short cut, and in doing so sacrificed the team. You can't build a winner when one (or two) players are above the team. Coach Frost also took his chances with the twins, and after two seasons realized that the inmates shouldn't run the asylum.

I sincerely wish UND luck down the stretch.... For the sake of those that are the future of the team.
