NMU 2013 Off-Season Thread

Re: NMU 2013 Off-Season Thread

I heard a rumor that the ghost of Dollar Bill Wirtz is roaming the halls of the PEIF, helping guide some decisions for the athletic side of the University.

This doesn't make me happy.

Also heard that WNMU-TV refuses to air any games (even tape delayed).

While this discussion isn't directly related to the NMU hockey off-season, it kinda is related. With three channels available, WNMU-TV refuses to even entertain the thought of airing hockey (or sports of any kind) on their channels. One channel is the their programming channel (13.1) that airs the national feed, along with local programming. 13.2 is strictly an HD feed of the national PBS broadcast, and 13.3... that's an SD WEST COAST Feed of the PBS national broadcast.

Really disappointed that WNMU-TV is closed minded on this issue. The rebuttal for trying it is "well, what programming do we bump?" Surprisingly, they have a WHOLE channel they can pre-empt for this. Or even try it during fundraiser time. What's the worst that happens, the phones stay silent, like they already do for the rebroadcast of "John Tesh Live from the Red Rocks" for the 19th year in a row?

Also a beef I have is that WNMU-TV, which is available thanks to satellite and cable across the whole UP, refuses to look beyond just the MQT area. WNMU is in prime location to be the UP's WCHA broadcaster, partner with MTU and LSSU, have all three schools secure sponsorship across the whole UP, and get a weekly WCHA game from one of those schools broadcast per week!

If Bemidji can get their games on Minnesota Public Television, and the Wisconsin Badgers have been doing it for decades... it really frustrates me how closed minded WNMU-TV is.

Ya gotta pick me up a pint glass from McGuire's!

They have a couple different styles of pint glass. Take a look on their website to choose your style. Please remind me in February to pick one or more up for you.

NMU needs a big kick in the rear. They gotta start treating the Wildcat hockey program like a prize possession. Not too many small schools get a big time D-1 program in a town of 20,000. Everything should be first class all the way...from TV's to the facilities, etc. They need to get fired up beyond belief and take this program to a new level and give Walt the boost he needs. No more lamexcuses!

Now where do the funds come from to do that?

Yes it frustrates me when you have the capabilities and they don't utilize what they have.

Re: NMU 2013 Off-Season Thread

Smart man.
You obviously missed my attempt at sarcasm Donkey. I'm sure billionaires get talked out of millions by decent Yooper salesmen every day. No sense beating a dead horse on this one. The NMU fans who know the situation have explained it quite well.

Yes because the Rangers were formed so the owners kid had a place to play. Once the owners son was done playing for the Rangers the team was sold and moved to Flint.

Plus the Royals have three Marquette kids who just might be Wildcats someday.

Really? When did NMU start recruiting kids who can't make an NAHL team?

Duh, because NMU is missing out on the Goberts, Jacksons, Kinnunens, and Lehtinens... all local kids who went straight to NMU*.

* After successful stints in the USHL or NAHL. And not through some low level pretend development league.

Did you also know that the Rangers were a complete financial disaster? If the owner didn't have a kid on the team, it would have gone under in two years or less. But hey, why let facts get in the way of your horse sense? Oh, the Rangers also skated some locals too.

Marquette has tough times supporting hockey teams .

Not really. It's just a matter of market size, demographics and saturation. Marquette High School, Junior hockey and NMU have always been adequately supported. It's simply a matter of market size. Feel free to list all the places where an NCAA D-1 program and USHL or NAHL program successfully have co-existed. Kalamazoo's NAHL team folded. The USNDP teams are lucky to have a couple hundred in the stands in Ann Arbor. Madison and the Twin Cities have been failures as well. Yes, Omaha has done well. Of course the Omaha market has nearly three times the population of the entire Upper Peninsula and more than twelve times as many people as all of Marquette County. A crowd of 3,000 in Marquette is equivalent to about 63,000 in Omaha. Marquette supports hockey quite well.

Soo has an OHL team and NCAA D1.

Erie, PA has Mercyhurst and the OHL Erie Panthers.

Fairbanks, AK. not sure you would consider Grand Forks and Fargo since they're not the same, but they're relatively close.

To Davy's point, there aren't many.

Soo Canada has the OHL. Big difference between the two. You don't see many Canadians cross the bridge for LSSU games unless they have a relative playing. Population Erie: over 100,000. Population Marquette: 21,584.

Re: NMU 2013 Off-Season Thread

USHL. and former coach. I see a pipeline.
Yep. Sure thing. Let's take a gander at the collegiate commitments the Fargo Force have had over the last five years:

University of Minnesota-Duluth 6
St. Cloud State University 5
University of Nebraska-Omaha 5
Minnesota State-Mankato 4
University of North Dakota 4
Miami University 3
University of Minnesota 3
Western Michigan University 3
Colorado College 2
Ohio State University 2
Air Force 1
Bemidji State University 1
Michigan Tech 1
Notre Dame 1
Princeton 1
University of Alaska-Fairbanks 1
University of Massachusetts 1

More Fargo players have committed to play for Jan Brady State than NoDak. Also, Fargo is a Tier I program. Not some sh*t Tier III team.

Yes and the USHL is two levels above the Tier III team that's about to play in Marquette and hopefully send players to Finlandia or NMU's club team. North Dakota pipeline? Marksie is a UND alum and they are USHL. He has a much better chance than anyone T-3 if getting someone on a D-1 scholarship. The chance of anyone of the league getting a d-1 ride is like a kid at St Olaf getting a spot on an NFL team or a Pink Pony winning the Kentucky Derby.

Maine and. New Hampshire. are playing non league games in middle of the season in Portland and Manchester.

NMU, LSSU and MTU should consider doing the same thing at the Puller, Dee and. Lakeview.

Why? You would see a huge decrease in your ticket revenue. NMU plays one non league home series. Lakeview, since renovation has about half the seating of the Berry and the seating area behind the bench has lousy sight lines. Oh yeah, then you have to pay the City to use the arena and staff it while your barn sits empty across the street. Why would Michigan Tech play their only home non conference series at the Dee? They can sell 3500 or more tickets at the Ice Arena when Michigan State comes to town. Yeah, why not cut that down to 1200? Deny your fan base the chance to see that game. What a brilliant plan. Tech plays a scrimmage at the Calumet Armory. That's about as far as that idea goes.
