Unlike St. Cloud State, Minnesota State does not have a broadcast journalism program, Allan said. The university relies on students from nearby Bethany College to produce the games along with two local professional broadcasters.
"It's all about trying to expose Maverick athletics to as many people," Allan said. "Expanding your footprint outside the greater Mankato area."
Just wondering about one thing in all this:Some interesting news from Minnesota:http://www.bemidjipioneer.com/content/st-cloud-state-launch-24-hour-sports-channel
The reason I post this here is because of the quote. The Athletic Department and WNMU TV seem to be controlled by the ghost of former Chicago Blackhawks' owner "Dollar" Bill Wirtz, whose penny pinching ways were famously highlighted by his stubborn refusal to air his club's games on TV because it would "keep fans from showing up."
After his passing, his son almost immediately negotiated a local TV package and the Hawks saw immediate returns on their TV investment.
There seems to be his stubbornness haunting the NMU campus, because WNMU TV is unwilling to broaden NMU's brand across the whole UP (a region that TV13 covers pretty well with the combination of over-the-air, cable re-transmission, and local satellite spot coverage).
WNMU could easily turn one of the extra sub-channels into an NMU / Collegiate channel offering NMU sports, local news (which WNMU already does with "Public Eye News,") and even incorporate coverage of LSSU and MTU (obviously giving NMU the prime time though).
It's frustrating to continue to read stories similar to this Bemidji Pioneer article that are building upon ideas that were first brought to WNMU TV almost a decade ago.
Just wondering about one thing in all this:
In the past, I thought that NMU Public TV received a good amount of negative feedback from people because the hockey games preempted PBS "Primetime" shows... And this led to threats of reduced donations/pledges... I thought that was the main concern with going this route and why they stopped broadcasting games in 05-06... Nothing about reducing the paid attendance at games...
Obviously this was before the extra sub-channels were around, so is that part of things no longer a concern?
