NMU 2013 Off-Season Thread

Re: NMU 2013 Off-Season Thread

NMU vs. Wisconsin Tickets on Sale TODAY!

I just ordered my NMU vs. Wisconsin tickets today from www.uwbadgers.com for the opening series for October 11 and 12. They have the online feature to allow you to select individual seats in specific sections rather than "best available" (as they have in the past). I called the ticket office to verify the closest section to the visitor bench, which is Section 121. Plenty of seats available right now near the NMU bench for Friday night, not as many for Saturday. For those going, this would be great to fill in the section near the bench with green.

The Badgers will no doubt be looking for some revenge after NMU's sweep last season at the Resch in Green Bay. Oh, and the Badgers are picked in pre-season to win the new Big 10 conference (not that this means much, but a conversation point).

GO CATS!

Some interesting news from Minnesota:http://www.bemidjipioneer.com/content/st-cloud-state-launch-24-hour-sports-channel
Unlike St. Cloud State, Minnesota State does not have a broadcast journalism program, Allan said. The university relies on students from nearby Bethany College to produce the games along with two local professional broadcasters.

"It's all about trying to expose Maverick athletics to as many people," Allan said. "Expanding your footprint outside the greater Mankato area."

The reason I post this here is because of the quote. The Athletic Department and WNMU TV seem to be controlled by the ghost of former Chicago Blackhawks' owner "Dollar" Bill Wirtz, whose penny pinching ways were famously highlighted by his stubborn refusal to air his club's games on TV because it would "keep fans from showing up."

After his passing, his son almost immediately negotiated a local TV package and the Hawks saw immediate returns on their TV investment.

There seems to be his stubbornness haunting the NMU campus, because WNMU TV is unwilling to broaden NMU's brand across the whole UP (a region that TV13 covers pretty well with the combination of over-the-air, cable re-transmission, and local satellite spot coverage).

WNMU could easily turn one of the extra sub-channels into an NMU / Collegiate channel offering NMU sports, local news (which WNMU already does with "Public Eye News,") and even incorporate coverage of LSSU and MTU (obviously giving NMU the prime time though).

It's frustrating to continue to read stories similar to this Bemidji Pioneer article that are building upon ideas that were first brought to WNMU TV almost a decade ago.

Just wondering about one thing in all this:

In the past, I thought that NMU Public TV received a good amount of negative feedback from people because the hockey games preempted PBS "Primetime" shows... And this led to threats of reduced donations/pledges... I thought that was the main concern with going this route and why they stopped broadcasting games in 05-06... Nothing about reducing the paid attendance at games...

Obviously this was before the extra sub-channels were around, so is that part of things no longer a concern?

No, the program managers fear the verbal backlash when Lawrence Welk is preempted for fundraiser week programming and thus refuse to entertain the thought of airing anything but the status quo. With the switch over to DTV, TV13 has one main HD feed (that they currently utilize by airing the PBS National feed), and two sub-channels (one airing TV13 programming and the national feed, the other channel airing a three hour tape delay of the PBS National feed).

Donations to WNMU have been decreasing in years, and there is no push from WNMU to re-invent themselves. They're happy airing re-runs of Lawrence Welk, Mr. Rodger's Neighborhood, and John Tesh "Live" at the Red Rocks. There has also been a decrease in local programming produced by TV13.

Charter used to air the games back in 2000 and 2001, and the prior Athletic Director (may he rest in peace) felt that airing the games on TV hurt the attendance at games. NMU hasn't had games aired locally since 2002 (I believe this also co-in sided with a switch in the radio contract).

WNMU-TV should be a marketing tool for the University. Just like how NMU switched to the CCHA to be more marketable in lower Michigan, WNMU broadcasts across the whole UP and could draw potential students to NMU. With simulcasts in the Soo and Houghton, MTU and LSSU could be asked to underwrite some programming to promote their brands also (obviously maintaining an NMU bias).

It's just frustrating to see ideas that have been brought up to those at TV13 over a decade ago (and promptly shot down) are being utilized and praised in other regions. WNMU could have been the front runner with this, but they refuse

Great point, aparch. I love my alma mater, I hate the people who run it. Especially the AD. When I went to Northern, the AD actually FOUGHT our attempts to advertise the school and provide coverage of NMU athletics, filling the void left by the Clinton-era website they still had up. Me and my friend were actually the reason the NCAA game vs. SCSU 3 years ago was even televised locally because we approached ABC. Of course Northern didn't even think that people would want to watch that game. God forbid we attract any fans outside of Marquette County!

I hope the WCHA package is a step in the right direction and gets NMU hockey at least some much deserved attention.

Is it too early to let you guys know you suck?

Definitely excited for some rivalry games with a purpose and am glad to have the UP in one conference. :D
