NMU 2013 Off-Season Thread

I'm all for burying that 4 year old thread for good.

Anyway, who do you think will make a bigger impact as a frosh, Sooth, Siemer, Dahlstrom or Shine?

That's very tough to judge, not having seen any of them in game action at this level. But Dahlstrom has to have success if this year's team is to succeed. I think each of the others has a chance to do well and hope the Shine and Sooth can be impact players as first year players.

Party at the Wooden Nickel and Howard Schultz is buying.

The Nickel didn't make the list this year (not a place that I frequently frequent, but always fun when I do) and Howard had other commitments. However, a good time was had by all!

There seems to be one relatively new poster he** bent on keeping that four year old thread alive. I wonder why.

The second half of last season I thought I might have seen Gerard Hanson at the Berry a few times. Is he still a possibility to join the team or has that ship passed?

I don't have an answer for you specifically on Hanson, but I thought I'd post the names that CollegeHockeyNews.com shows as NMU's 2013 and 2014 recruits, and Hanson is in the mix. Others (davyd) would know for sure who is still committed on this list:

2013
Dahlström, Mathias G 6-0 180 2/26/91 Smedjebacken, Sweden Chicago (USHL)
Dun, Derek G 6-0 170 11/29/93 Surrey, B.C. Nanaimo (BCHL)
Erkkila, Levi C 5-8 160 3/11/95 Calumet, Mich. Marquette (NLHL)
Hanson, Gerard F 5-11 176 7/28/92 Lidingo, Sweden Dubuque (USHL)
Hofford, Cal D 5-10 165 3/1/94 Woodbridge, Ont. Hill Academy (HS-Canada)
Kaib, Barrett D 5-9 190 2/7/93 Upper St. Clair, Pa. Green Bay (USHL)

He should be available. I don't think Erkkila will join the team this year.

I figured Erkkila and Cal Hofford would be 2014. I wasn't aware of the Fin Salminen.

I would not be surprised if Hofford is 2014 with only 2 D lost this year and Eibler and Kaib coming in as transfers plus Maschmeyer starting out as well.

I'm jealous that you guys are getting Denver Pierce on the coolness of his name alone, my goodness what a fantastic name for a hockey player!

Re: NMU 2013 Off-Season Thread

Forrest Karr has been on the job for only 10 months. He has said on different occasions that he wanted to observe how things were run around the athletic department so he could then make changes where they might be needed. He's already fired and hired a men's basketball coach.

He also mentioned he's been working on getting a video board to replace the old scoreboard at the Superior Dome. After that, a video scoreboard to replace the one at the BEC. It all takes tons of money but he has been working on it. I got this info from listening to the coach's show that was hosted by Davyd and Ryan Beckman on the radio this season. Davyd would be better at remembering what he talked about.

Karr might not be a guy looking for face time in the local media but he is working at turning the NMU athletic department in the right direction.

Re: NMU 2013 Off-Season Thread

Obviously the poster currently known as Pink Pony has a reason he`s keeping that other post alive. Plus his post/delete game on the half dozen threads he's dive bombed makes it clear his current title isn't his first.

I suggest ignoring him on that other thread. Let the four year old thread die. Actually, just ignore him period.

Re: NMU 2013 Off-Season Thread

Through the gravepvine of local jocks, alumni and PEIF work out dudes, Karr is going a great job. As mentioned, he's not some flamboyant kind of guy who roams the halls of the PEIF or around downtown, but gets it done. Give him a few years, assuming he wants to stay around, and things are going to be looking up.

Re: NMU 2013 Off-Season Thread

I don't post here much, but I do appreciate all the information you guys provide on Wildcat Hockey. It keeps me better informed than just looking for articles.
Schedule looks like we still might get some TV games with Wisconsin and North Dakota, which is great for those of us way outside the area.
Real excited to hear positive comments about the new AD. My concern about the new conference aligment is small market-small schools might lose their programs due to poor revenue. Northern never did have a grand following from the community or student body, (back in my day was old Lakeview Arena), and just judging from what I have seen on the TV, they still don't pack em in at the Barry. Any reason to be concerned? I figured you guys would have a feel for this issue.

Sooth played for Dubuque; it must be the "Iowa" connection with Kyle, perhaps. (?)

NMU has recruited and scouted the USHL pretty strongly. The fact that Sooth has played for a winner under an outstanding coach makes him an attractive candidate to help the Cats. He could be an early impact player.

Those California kids like surfing in the snow.

Re: NMU 2013 Off-Season Thread

There have been several Cali boys at NMU. A few Texans too.

Davyd the non traditional recruits are the type of kids I would target.

The Gophers will get the top Minnesota kids. The Wolverines and Spartans will get the top Michigan kids. The Eagles and Terriers will get the top Boston kids.

But is up to the WCHA teams to get the top non traditional kids.

Is that why NMU has had so many from Texas, California, Sweden and Finland?
