Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Not surprising that you missed the point of his question.

He's asking if letting them in due to the fact that they are minorities implies that they can't be proficient enough due to the fact that they are minorities. He's not talking about the causes of their deficiency but rather the assumption that many will be deficient due to race.

Would seem to fit the broad definition of racism that so many ascribe.

I'm sure it will be pointed out though how it's somehow different.

See below. The question itself is a classic example of "assuming the consequent." The factual way to think about the issue is laid out below.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Personally I don't believe that it's racism but rather lending a helping hand where a helping hand could be used.

I don't believe that many things that are now called racism are in fact.

The racism police have got their hands on some awfully broad brushes these days...

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

How is it racist to say, "given the difference in resources, a 700 verbal in Detroit equals a 740 verbal in Grosse Point"?

I'm with you when you suggest racial set asides were a mistake. It should all have been class-based, right from the start. The affirmative action system we have now just gives upper middle class whites' slots to upper middle class blacks.

You are dodging the question, which is typical for you. It sounds like the question should be, "can they perform up to standards, or not? and if not, what do we do about it?" to me proficiency-based remedial eduation is the way to go, and you sort of elliptically allude to that as well. I'm going to take your non-response to be a reluctant concurrence, "if only I had phrased the question in a way that fit your biases".

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Well you have to ask yourself why they're not as academically proficient and a lot of it has to do with education not being equal for white suburbanites vs those in poorer communities.

What part of "I certainly do understand the benevolent impulses behind the concept" is so hard for you to understand?

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Some are portraying a culture, not "black culture," because there's no such thing as "black culture," that's just a marketing label used to elicit either approval or fear. Plenty of gangsta rap glorifies a dumbfukc lifestyle the way plenty of country glorifies a dumbfukc lifestyle, and for the same reason -- all dollars are green. Though I'd mention that gangsta rap made much of their money off dumb suburban white kids shopping for an edgy culture to help get them laid. Those artists and producers were really making their cash by feeding back the idiotic expectations of white people about the "black culture" they were terrified of / lured by. The kids who bought that music were just the flip side of the people who cower behind their tower of back issues of American Spectator peeing their pants with excitement at the thought of reenacting Thermopylae and saving Western Civilization from the hordes.

Little Richard once said white suburban kids put the Pat Boone version of Tutti Frutti out on their dressers to reassure mom and dad. And kept his version under the pillow.

I'd prefer to see more black faces on the Ferguson PD (and other similar jurisdictions, too). But I think we shouldn't dismiss entirely the difficulty that a small department might have in attracting and keeping sharp young black candidates. Higher pay, better benefits, more opportunities for advancement in St. Louis are not inconsequential concerns. Plus, we don't want to cross that line into race based policing.

I once hired a young Latina right out of Iowa State as a general assignments reporter. She had no broadcast experience but could write like h*ll and was very smart. I told her she was not my "Latina" reporter, but that there might come a time when her background would enable her to get a story that the rest of us couldn't. She understood.

You are dodging the question, which is typical for you.

"You are dodging" equals "I have no instructions on how to respond outside of my limited scope." Got it.

This is the problem with coming into an open environment after being in the hot house of Freep or wherever you guys are spawning these days. The facts don't agree with your canned narratives, so whenever you try to jam reality into one of the three or four categories you've trained yourself to regurgitate talking points to, either your tape repeats or what comes out has no bearing on the discussion.

Answer the question. How is it racist to say, "given the difference in resources, a 700 verbal in Detroit equals a 740 verbal in Grosse Point"? Further deflection will be regarded as admission of defeat.

Concern trolling. It's a classic talk radio play: "Maybe liberals aren't evil, but just stupid -- maybe they think they're helping the poor with their foodstamps and AFDC when actually they're hurting them with paternalism. The hand that you hold is the hand that holds you down. They're the real racists!"

I guess it's how they sleep at night, but still... obvious projection is obvious.

Because it assumes facts not in evidence and begs the question?

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Where had law enforcement confirmed shots were fired from behind?

The nytimes posted that in an article. Of course I don't know whether that's confirmed or not so that's why I've mentioned that detail in most of my posts. Obviously if that's not the case and the eyewitnesses change their stories, then that would affect my opinion.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

I saw one of those two lady Missouri state legislators who've taken up permanent residence on CNN this morning (don't know which one, their views are interchangeable). And she was telling Don Lemon that it was a good thing the tensions were diminishing and that the National Guard was drawing down. Then she predicted (threatened?) that if there was no indictment and subsequently no conviction, then we'd see more violence in the streets. She didn't even offer a boiler plate suggestion that that would be wrong and would hurt the community she allegedly represents. Just the naked threat of street violence. And Don Lemon, racial propagandist that he is, didn't ask her to clarify her position or to denounce the potential for violence. IMO, he's worse than she is. CNN has almost completely sold itself out over the past two weeks. The attraction of racial unrest is like catnip. And any standards of objectivity they may have had have been abandoned.

About that picture of "Michael Brown" that had been making the rounds to show what a "thug" he was...

Completely agree - one of their yappers (not sure which one) was going on this morning about the spot where Mike Brown was "gunned down." As if Al Capone's henchmen had executed him, St. Valentine's style.

BUT IT WAS ON THE INTERNET! IT HAS TO BE TRUE!;)

The public opinion on this case has been decided one way or the other, and I fear any facts will cause outcry by the "losing" side. Quite sad, actually.

I don't expect these cheap a*s local politicians, playing to the mob, to exercise anything approaching responsible leadership. But wouldn't it be nice for "network" anchors to provide a little context and balance? Prior to this racial explosion, CNN had been flogging the case of the kid who died in a wrestling mat in Valdosta, Georgia. Hard. Now it may be that two white boys (who just happen to be the sons of an FBI agent) murdered this kid in broad daylight in the middle of their school out of racial animus. And the local cops know all about it, but because of racial animus are letting the boys slide. But I rather doubt it.

How much economic damage has been done to that community after two weeks of this nonsense? How many black owned businesses have been damaged or destroyed? How many jobs held by black folks in that community have been eliminated? And if that economic activity ever resumes, when will it be?

All the more reason for network anchors to be very circumspect in what they say.

I'll repeat my anecdote about the late Frank Reynolds. On the day Reagan was shot, Reynolds announced Jim Brady had died and ABC showed WH staffers in tears standing around a monitor. Their reaction wasn't confirming what Reynolds had said, it was in reaction to what Reynolds had said. The "death" of Brady was news to them. This prompted a visibly angry Reynolds, in a very loud voice, to suggest "we get this right." Editing on the fly, which is what's going on in wall to wall coverage, requires balance, confidence in your sources, and willingness to admit you may not have it locked down. And it's much tougher to do now than it was back then. I remember the night Bin Laden got clipped, somebody posted a picture they said was him. It wasn't. The Palestinians and their media pals regularly provide photo shopped images of alleged Israeli "atrocities."

We have much better thug shots of him cuffing that clerk around. Or are you still clinging to the notion it wasn't him in that convenience store? Interesting, since his family, or their platoon of lawyers or his accomplice or his lawyer don't deny it was him.
