You know, I don't get the big deal on whether the cops have body armor and scary looking guns and Kevlar helmets. Seriously.

They can wear all the crap they want. It's what they do with it that really matters.

Edit: Bring 50 fully armored tanks for show. If it's for just a show of force, so be it. If they actually USE them....whole 'nother story.

Re: Nice Plant #7: Get me off of this planet

Although the narrative by the "witnesses" strikes me as incomplete, let's take a step back and try to put ourselves in the place of these 53 officers in Ferguson. Got no idea whether this is a top rated force or not. But even if they are, suddenly they find themselves in the middle of a national media firestorm, with "journalists" from all over the place participating in and possibly inciting riotous behavior. It has long been a standing joke in TV news that the "demonstrators" will wait 'till the TV cameras show up before beginning their demonstration. Or will gladly repeat it if necessary. And joining those "journalists" are demonstrators whose motivations may extend somewhat beyond what most of us would consider appropriate, protected speech. And may include some folks who would be happy to see more police shootings (NBPP?).

The Ferguson cops have a responsibility not only to protect the rights of those who are demonstrating, but for the vast majority of tax payers of Ferguson who aren't demonstrating, to protect their lives and property and to enforce their ordinances. And taunting police, challenging their authority and playing at revolution is never a good idea. And can lead to tragedy. Kent State comes to mind. Of course, that's exactly what some folks probably want.

This protest tonight...the PD doesn't know what will happen. So they take preventative measures. Having said that, did they over-react? I think they did. But they did not escalate the current overall situation. The protesters (some of them, not all) did by rioting. Any rise in activity due to the previous rioting WILL cause a reaction. And if you do not do what the police tell you to do (and it's not martial law, they said 'protest in daylight') then it's all good. The protesters didn't do that. Just sayin'.

Cops are the referees of life (somebody has to be). And they can be wrong. And frequently are. But when a cop tells you to move along, you move along, or prepare to suffer the consequences. You deal with bad, over reacting cops later. But when they blow the whistle, somebody heads to the box.

Bingo. Video, eye witnesses, etc will sort itself out later.

I'm sure they were trying to avoid another Waco or Ruby Ridge, but backing down only emboldens the anti-government folks.
That it does. Unfortunately, all another Waco or Ruby Ridge does is embolden different group of anti-government folks.

The only thing that is clear to me about this is that while Ferguson PD is equipped to handle situation, they are not trained to, and it shows.

Oh you're cute. I was asking a serious question because I wasn't sure who the journalist was referring to with he or they in the tweet you posted. There was no context.

Was it the kid who was shot? Someone who was teargassed?

The bigger question is why are you defending the destruction of the first amendment?

How is aiming weapons at peaceful demonstrations during the daylight not escalating the situation? And peaceful demonstrations can only happen in the daylight?

I'm not condoning any rioting, but that whole situation is a big **** sandwich and the police sure need to take the overwhelming big bite of it.

The report of tanks being shipped to Ferguson were inaccurate. The tanks were on a train but they were being delivered to a nearby military installation.

The Department of Justice gave the Ferguson PD a grant to get two dashboard cameras and two personal cameras that officers would wear. These were delivered at some point this year, but still sit in the police station, unopened.

And no one is blaming the initial rioters/looters for putting the police on edge. Now, when a group gathers in that area...guess what? The police are going to prepare for the worst. Again, the police over-reacted yesterday with the actual firing of rubber bullets/tear gas, but frankly, they are getting sh* on more than they should, in the public eye.

I would hope that most police agencies would be able to tell the difference between a riot and a peaceful protest. But since the Furguson police cannot tell the difference between an unarmed person with their hands in the air and someone who needs to be killed with deadly force, well.....I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Wow. Considering there were reports of bottles, rocks, and molotovs being thrown at police...

And then you finish it up with that last line, yeah, everything the witnesses say is gospel but the police don't get the time of day.
