Kepler

Did part of Mrs. K's research cover the number of two parent families then vs. now?

Just guessing that the communities that policed themselves had more stable family structure than those that did not.

It didn't, but that's actually another myth. Back in the good old days, people didn't get divorced... fathers just abandoned their families. And just as many unmarried women had kids. And just as many teenagers had kids. And so on.

The sepia-toned images of the past never stand up to research. Now let's burn the library so this will never happen again.

No conflict of interest here.

Whoa. Now this I have a serious issue with...

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

Never mind having food or living in conditions that don't make crime an appealing alternative, they just need that sense of achievement from overcoming adversity. Like I'm sure you had to do....

F&ck you

I didn't realize that stealing cigarellos and browbeating a shop owner was an achievement.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

The charge of "racism" is the modern equivalent McCarthyism. It's an argument stopper. Designed to shut up the target. Employed ironically by the off spring of 50s liberals who screamed bloody murder about "guilt by association," and "I only went to a couple of meetings in college." It adds nothing to our national discussion on race. Are there racists? Certainly (not all of them white). Were there Communists? Just ask Julius and Ethel and Alger. But these represent a microscopic minority. Perhaps we could stop the name calling long enough to see if we can find real solutions to problems.

Is that you, Pio--name caller extraordinaire?

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

I love that Jim et al insist that unless you believe there's been an injustice of epic proportions here you must be closed minded, selfish, unsympathetic, etc. I'd bet Gurt, burd and I have expressed similar ideals to the accusers far more often than not, yet suddenly we're ignorant heathen. I know where I stood on Martin/Zimmerman and it wasn't a scout first ask questions mindset.

Fact is I don't believe the police officer in Ferguson was negligent, I believe the kid got himself killed by his own actions, I don't believe there was any wrongdoing in failing to indict, the peaceful protesters are fine but misguided, and this isn't remotely reflective of society going to hell in a manually woven vessel.

Feel free to disagree with that and state why, but get over yourself thinking you're the only ones going Jack Handy with your analysis.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

No question.

Of 106 arrested, 12 were from Ferguson.

No question.

The arrestees accurately reflect the population of vandals? Cpt. Johnson said, in effect, we did this to ourselves. He talked about outsiders stirring up trouble last summer. But Monday's conflagration he placed squarely on the shoulders of locals.

If I were to come upon a group of rioters in the street and they start to beat on my vehicle and attempting to reach me inside of it, I'm invoking the "immediate fear of great bodily harm or death" rules.

Agree completely, but would you have been stupid enough to try and advance your car directly into a stationary crowd when there were other avenues to navigate? The crowd didn't swarm the car at the onset, but rather the driver put himself right in the thick of it not the other way around.

According to the Star Tribune story, the driver honked his horn ("blaring his horn" I believe was the exact phrase) and the protesters did not move. As for the white van, the Trib stated that protesters were trying to hop on said van as he was trying to move around the crowd.

Meanwhile, the driver has still not been detained, although he remains a "suspect" in the case.

As for the actual case at hand, I believe the cop's story, and I believe that a correct judgement was handed down. Grand Jury cases have very loose standards when it comes to evidence (hearsay, etc). That pretty much means anything goes for presentation. IMO, there'd be a lot more doubt and anger if it went to a regular jury case, and half the evidence (my uneducated guess) was disallowed, and the cop was found not guilty.

With you Brent, run the idiots over.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

Worthy of this president sending representatives to his funeral.

A guy died in a nationally covered case, in which the population is divided. It's worthy of representation of the presidency, IMO, despite what my opinion is.

Re: Nice Planet #8: You People Make Me Sick.

How much Crown have you had tonight?

Zero. I think Brown is a criminal, but I also mourn a lost life, even if it was justified (certain cases need not apply; see: serial killers, kid killers, etc). Given the national attention this story got, I think a presidential presence is alright.
