Re: Nice Planet 2010

http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/02/02/michigan.school.threat/index.html

Public schools and Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan, shut down Wednesday after police learned of a threat, school and university officials said.
Cindy Paavola, the university's director of community relations, said officials decided as a precautionary measure to close the university at 8:20 a.m. Wednesday.
Paavola said campus police were alerted to a threat made by telephone that they are "taking seriously."
"The caller threatened that there would be harm to students, faculty, staff and administrators," Paavola said. "They didn't identify particular people, but it was a wide-ranging threat and we are taking it seriously."
"We don't know the seriousness of the threat because we haven't caught up with this person. Rather than be sorry, we're going to be safe," Paavola said.
State and local law enforcement authorities are assisting university police in the investigation, she added.
The Marquette Area Public Schools also sent students and staff home, interim superintendent Debra Veiht told CNN.
She said police referred to a threat on a blog, which they deemed credible.
"We put in our emergency plan into place and it's running smoothly," Veiht said.
The public school system has more than 3,000 students and 400 staff members, she said.
The Marquette Senior High School is located about a half-block away from the university.
University officials locked down all buildings, so no one could enter or leave, and told students living on campus to stay in their dormitories. Paavola said several office buildings were evacuated Wednesday morning.

Re: Nice Planet 2010

From what I'm gathering from the comments, it was a blog post of someone threatening to shoot up the school. The verbage "worse than Virginia Tech" was floating around

The phone call was just someone alerting them to the blog post.

Also hearing a female has been apprehended by the FBI outside of Gant and Spaulding Hall, but no confirmation on that one.

I guess the female apprehended was unrelated to the event.
Even if this all ends up being nothing, it's still scary, and it's good to know that the university and city officials took it seriously.

Re: Nice Planet 2010

I'm a little displeased that a certain hockey booster currently three time zones away is calling the reaction by campus and the surrounding area overreaction to a nothing story.

I am glad for the quick response. First time i've heard of public safety being quick about anything though. ;)

Re: Nice Planet 2010

I just got a call, apparently it might have been someone in one of my classes.

To elaborate, the person of interest was connected to Pioneer surgical where they were told to lock their doors and all but one of my classes is connected with them in some way. On top of that we were going to go there for today.

Seriously, who wants to take responsibility for doing nothing if the threat turns out to be real? Public safety officials really don't have a choice, do they? It's like rolling on fire alarm calls from a school--you know it's probably false, but what if it isn't? In my entirely non professional and unscientific analysis, it seems to me people who actually plan to do something usually don't annoounce it in advance. Timothy McVeigh didn't make a call or send a fax or an e-mail, he just parked that Ryder truck loaded with explosives out in front of the Murrah building, and right below the day care center, and walked away. Klebold and Harris went to their prom. Cho made some chilling videotapes but arranged for them to be publicized after the shootings.

Re: Nice Planet 2010

We received a threat of harm to "all management" from a recently terminated employee yesterday. While I was a bit unnerved when I first heard about it, I also later found out that the doomoss sent it in an e-mail.

Re: Nice Planet 2010

And not only did she attempt that, but upon the failed mailing, she came back to ask for a refund, because her package wasn't sent. Yeah.

And I bet the NMU thing was because they denied the suspect penecillin.

Mpls. woman who mailed puppy will not get it back

Stacey Champion, 39, was charged with 2 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty after authorities say she tried to mail the pup to her son in Georgia as a birthday present. The dog, a 4-month-old poodle-schnauzer mix, was sealed tight in a priority mail box with no food, water, or air holes.

"They don't have a display of what should be shipped and should not be shipped," she claimed.

Re: Nice Planet 2010

This law made me think about hearing an interesting stat the other day- Before the Moral Majority 80 something % of people who were not Christians had a favorable view of Christians/Christianity. Since the MM and the Righeousness thing 89% of not-Christians have a negative view of Christianity/Christians. I wonder why...

I await the tidal wave of denunciation from the left generated by this vulgar, coarse, deliberate racist attack on a distinguished African American.
I have to say I love having to search down the source for some blog article. Especially when it turns out that they quote mined the article but cutting out about half of it.
