Re: Nice Planet 2010
Okay, Tevye ("on the other hand. . .on the other hand"), let me explain it to you: in a country where 92% of the citizens observe Christmas to one extent or another (many of them not Christians) it is ALWAYS inappropriate to ban an appearance by Santa at a taxpayer funded event. Anyone who feels their delicate religious sensibilities would be harmed by having their kids attend is free to skip the event. Freedom of expression extends to the overwhelming majority as well as to whiney, tiny, minorities. And caving in to loudmouthed minorities isn't "openminded," it's just gutless.
We hear a lot these days about "teachable moments." Perhaps this would be a moment to teach these newly arrived Somalis something about our culture. Having their kids accept a candy cane from Santa isn't likely to have much of an impact on them beyond the moment.
Well, you can't say he's entirely secular, being as Santa Claus is just the Dutch name for St. Nicholas. Still... who cares. He's not there to preach about Christ in his modern form, he's there to bring you presents and tell you to celebrate time with those you love.
Also, I don't see why Muslims would have a problem with celebrating the birth of their prophet Jesus. It's not an acknowledged holiday in Islam as far as I know, and they'd have to celebrate it differently (not sure that they believe Jesus is the son of God), but they respect the guy. If anything, the ban would be more appropriate for a classroom full of Jews or Buddhists.
