Re: Nice Planet 2010

Well, you can't say he's entirely secular, being as Santa Claus is just the Dutch name for St. Nicholas. Still... who cares. He's not there to preach about Christ in his modern form, he's there to bring you presents and tell you to celebrate time with those you love.

Also, I don't see why Muslims would have a problem with celebrating the birth of their prophet Jesus. It's not an acknowledged holiday in Islam as far as I know, and they'd have to celebrate it differently (not sure that they believe Jesus is the son of God), but they respect the guy. If anything, the ban would be more appropriate for a classroom full of Jews or Buddhists.

Okay, Tevye ("on the other hand. . .on the other hand"), let me explain it to you: in a country where 92% of the citizens observe Christmas to one extent or another (many of them not Christians) it is ALWAYS inappropriate to ban an appearance by Santa at a taxpayer funded event. Anyone who feels their delicate religious sensibilities would be harmed by having their kids attend is free to skip the event. Freedom of expression extends to the overwhelming majority as well as to whiney, tiny, minorities. And caving in to loudmouthed minorities isn't "openminded," it's just gutless.

We hear a lot these days about "teachable moments." Perhaps this would be a moment to teach these newly arrived Somalis something about our culture. Having their kids accept a candy cane from Santa isn't likely to have much of an impact on them beyond the moment.

its an event honored by singing (which is forbidden in islam), some drinking (which is forbidden in islam), open signs of affection (which isn't exactly liked by Islam), and various degrees of idol worship (which is STRONGLY forbidden in Islam)... I know you're trying to be cute, but honestly, you don't understand the depth of the clash involved.

I just came here to post the same thing. Redamndiculous.

We live in the blame age...it is never your responsibility to parent your kids, know what you are signing, pay your bills etc. Just blame somebody else or find an organization with the sole purpose of blaming other people...they think that creating a one-way accountability system is the way to make things fair...all it does is create a population of people incapable of taking responsibility for their own actions.

But. . .but. . .but, I thought it took a village.

After learning a parent on her coed peewee hockey team — comprised entirely of boys except for her — called for restrictions on her ice time or her removal from the team unless her skills improved, she did the only thing she thought she could: She quit.

...

“It is now 14 games into the season and I have noticed that Kayla’s play has not improved,” the agenda reads. “It is at the point where many of the team members do not want to play on this team if this situation is not addressed.”

Atis then details two possible options for consideration, either moving Kayla from defence to forward and keeping her off of power plays and penalty kills, or playing her every second shift on defence and again keeping her off special teams “until her skating and shooting improves.”

“If Kayla is NOT amenable to the above options, the coach should find Kayla a new team to play on — commensurate to her skill level — for the balance of the season,” the agenda reads.

There are Christians right here in my hometown, actually in my kid's class, who feel the way you describe about things. They would be heartily disturbed if Santa showed up and took up time that could be used to further the education of their kid. As a matter of fact they pushed not to have Christmas parties as it is a corruption of the real meaning of Christmas. This isn't a clash with just Islam but with any group that is strongly fundamentalist. What fascinates me is many of the voices that say we should be saving our tax dollars, who do not want to fund social programs/education so the budget is balancedand are complaining that education is in the trash, are OK with funding events that are entertainment to celebrate a religious/secular holiday. The irony is just delicious.

Re: Nice Planet 2010

I'm not really outraged about this, it just seems so silly

The principal of a public school
in Brookline, Mass., is asking parents to fill out permission slips before their children can participate in a weekly recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Gerardo Martinez, the principal of The Devotion School, informed parents that the school would begin reciting the pledge in January over the public address system.

Attached to the letter was a form that asked parents to check either: "Yes, my child will participate in the weekly Pledge of Allegiance" or "No, my child will not participate in the weekly Pledge of Allegiance."

The article finishes with this line:
Under state law, teachers are required to lead students in the Pledge of Allegiance at the start of every school day. Those who fail to do so for at least two weeks could face fines of up to five dollars.

Wonder how long that law has been on the books?

So there are lots of PC deluded idiots as well as "my way or the highway" religious fools out there. This is news? We've seen the confluence of these morons in the war on Halloween: the PC types don't like kids dressing up like bums (it offends the homeless) while the Christian fundamentalists believe it's a Satanic celebration (despite the obvious fact that it isn't). As far as Christmas is concerned, they want a religious observance, which is obviously inappropriate. I'll bet the Christians to whom you refer represent a tiny minority of the parents. Either way, these fools can stay home and let the rest of the kids enjoy the festivities.

You figure if we eliminate Santa passing out candy canes one day a year would put the various education budgets in the black? Are you dain bramaged? In NYC it's not candy canes that cause red ink. It's literally thousands of incompetent unionized teachers who can't be fired who report each day to "rubber rooms" to while away their time (at taxpayer expense) making selections for OTB and doing crosswords.

Would it make you feel better if I said there are azzholes on both sides of this issue? Done.

Wow. If only I had the capacity adjust other people's words in my mind like you do then I could claim the 'dain' damaged label. Did you read what I wrote or simply decide what you think I would say? And to be contrary- all those little pennies add up to $ or are you one of those fools that throw pennies away.

Look, you're the one who jammed about a month's worth of lefty crapola into a single post, not me. Yeah, I read what you wrote. Among other things, you implied that if we'd just stop having little classroom Christmas parties, all would be well with our educational system. Then you seem to back away from that utterly nonsensical position, then you make your silly remark about "little pennies add up." Well, which is it? Is our educational system teetering on the brink of the financial abyss because of Santa passing out candy canes or not? Or is it just Santa you don't like? Or Christmas? Or Christians? And if that's the case, why not try manning up and just saying so. Because you're not nearly as clever as you evidently think you are, "delicious irony" notwithstanding.

My initial point, which I reiterate, is that small, noisy groups shouldn't expect to have the rest of the world march to the beat of their drum. Quite the opposite. And that goes for Muslims, conservative Christians and anyone else determined to take the fun out of life for school kids. Got it? BTW, I'm saving up my pennies to throw at YOU.

Re: Nice Planet 2010

A blow struck in the name of truth and justice! Or something...

DECEMBER 22--A 13-year-old boy was arrested Friday for using a permanent marker while in class at his Oklahoma City middle school, a violation of an obscure city ordinance.

According to an Oklahoma City Police Department report, the boy was spotted “in possession of a permanent marker” by Roosevelt Middle School teacher DeLynn Woodside. The 50-year-old educator told cop Miguel Campos that the student was “writing on a piece of paper, which caused it to bleed over onto the desk.”

Woodside, pictured at right, reported that the child, whose name was redacted by police from the report, attempted to hide the marker when she asked him for it. Strangely, Woodside’s Facebook page reveals that her “likes and interests” include the official “Sharpie Permanent Markers” page on Facebook.

Campos reported that he allowed Woodside, a seventh grade math teacher, to “sign a citation” against the boy, who was then transported to the Community Intervention Center, a juvenile holding facility. A police sergeant subsequently “booked the marker into the property room.”

A police spokesman referred to the student’s bust as a “citizen’s arrest” effectuated by Woodside.

Re: Nice Planet 2010

I worked for a while in Ok City and it was the most "conservative" place I've ever been. I was a liberal there, no kidding. The talk show host at the station where I worked spent just about everyday rehashing the events at Waco, and how it was a government conspiracy, and somehow justified McVeigh blowing up the Murrah buiding. I was never quite clear whether they embraced Vernon Howell because he was a gun nut or a religious nut or both. I just know I draw the line at mass killings of law enforcement officers serving valid warrants.

In the c.ase at hand, whatever happened to confiscating the marker and sending the little brat to the principal's office? Citizen arrests? Cops? Police reports? Evidence rooms? Over a magic marker? "Madness. . .madness." I look forward to reading about the Ok City cops doing undercover magic marker buy/busts.

I am so glad you can tell me what I was implying and that it was laden with so much of what is on your agenda. I didn't know. Throw all the pennies you want at me. If it keeps you busy that is a good thing.

Merry Christmas. I hope things get better for you, so much of what you see seems to sadden you or make you mad.
