NHL 2021: I Pledge Allegiance to Gritty

In even more Hockey Canada news, per Spittin’ Chiclets there’s a rumor that CHL players will become NCAA eligible in 2025. Granted, I never listen to the podcast and it was during a segment called Rumor Boyz so idk if whatever comes out of that is ever legit or not, but that would be a massive change.

With NIL a thing now, and considering what they did for Swankler due to COVID, I don't see a reason to continue excluding most ex-CHL players from NCAA eligibility. My understanding is that all they get is a weekly stipend for incidentals & leisure expenses; not really a wage or salary. They live with billet families who handle room, board, and act as a sort of legal guardian for those who are still minors.

The sticking point that I could see is that there are a handful of CHL players who are signed to NHL deals. They aren't ready for the big show, but are required to play in CHL because they haven't turned 20 yet. It seems likely those players would continue to remain ineligible.

I think the universities it would stand to hurt the most are the Canadians ones with CIS programs.

Looks like we’re getting NHL players at the Olympics in 2026. And a four nations, US, Canada, Sweden and Finland, tournament next year.

Canadians: “We’re going to have McDavid, Crosby, and MacKinnon together!”

Other countries: “And who will be in net?”

Canadians: “Uh…”

Even without NIL, the cost of attendance stipend the NCAA allows now sounds like what you’re describing.

But with Swankler, isn’t that literally just a case of them checking the wrong box and then saying “oops! Well, we aren’t going to appeal our own work…”?

I saw the announcement, came over here, and read your post- thinking it was a prediction of the final four.

Then I saw it was the ONLY four. I went from excited to see a lot of great international hockey to oh- just 4 teams. Not as exciting.

Well, Russia is out given current events. Them and the four selected are the only countries with 35+ players in the NHL. Assuming this will be NHL-only teams they probably wanted to avoid another Team NA and Team Europe situation from the last go around.

Also interesting is that Switzerland is actually the sixth most represented country in the NHL. Though the way Slovakia is building that probably won’t last too much longer.

Yes. You must be under an NHL contract to participate in that tournament next year.

Sounds like 2025 is going to be a teaser for the Olympics in 2026 and 2030 and a full World Cup of Hockey in 2028 and 2032.

I was kind of surprised at no Czechia but it looks like they don’t have enough players in the NHL to fill out a roster.

...

It's a stupid rule that the CHL has to "protect" their clubs from the NHL poaching kids, realizing they're terrible, and putting them in the AHL. Instead, they get to go back to juniors until their 20.

Also, Hockey Canada needs to be burnt to the ground, have their ashes p*ssed on, and buried in an unmarked pit.

Miracle came out 20 years ago this week so I’ve been watching some videos on the making of it. They talk about how they wanted to make it as authentic as possible, scripting the plays on the ice just as they happened. But for all the attention to detail, in the five seconds they show Finland at the end of the movie they show them wearing grey jerseys, when they very clearly wore white for that game. Right template and everything, just the wrong color. Odd miss.

Can you share links to the "making of" videos you're referring to? Thanks

Well, the NHL and the Coyotes are saying they’re playing in Arizona next season so I guess the relocation talk can cool for a bit.

News reports today are indicating that there could be an announcement this weekend that the Coyotes will be sold and moved from the desert to the deseret

Seems inevitable to me. I will be moving to AZ right about the time the NHL tries again there.
