Re: NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

Vegas is pretty close to being a lock, I think - they already have over 11,500 deposits for season tickets. Quebec seems likely; they didn't build that new 18,000 seat arena just for the Remparts.

Re: NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

Here's what I'd do:

Expand
Vegas
TO2 (play in West)

Relocate
FLA to QUE

Seattle lost an NBA franchise. Suspect city for another pro team.

Kill Canadian expansion

@rwesthead: Correction: BMO’s currency expert says loonie will slip to 76¢ by year’s end, down from 82¢ today, and down to 65¢ in 06/16. @RichardAPeddie

IIRC, the North Stars were held hostage. The City of St. Paul/State of MN wouldn't pay for a new barn, so the owner followed through on his threat and moved them to Dallas.

Uh, no.

Former North Stars employees - including team vice president Pat Foricea - also testify that Green has privately said that he moved the team to Dallas last year because of the sexual harassment claim. Green has publicly blamed the team's financial fortunes for the move.

They didn't lose a team the way Seattle or Atlanta lost teams. The North Stars were hijacked.

As were the Sonics. The first owner tried to get public funds from Washington, but that was a no go. Then he sold it to the current Thunder owner who also tried to shake down the state for cash, though that was mostly for show because almost everyone knew he was going to move to OKC when he bought them.

All of us are on the outside looking in. But my belief is that Green never intended to keep the team for the long haul. Rather, it was always about making a large short term profit, and not caring who he hurt in the process.

Note that Green sold the team relatively quickly after moving to Dallas. If the sexual harassment claim had been the key issue, he could have used the move as an opportunity to turn over a new leaf and live happily ever after as an NHL owner. On the ice, the team was on the rise. Instead, he sold for top dollar as soon as the opportunity arose.

It's important to say that the sexual harassment case was and is a serious matter. And I'm not doubting Pat Forciea's veracity. But as an actual motivation for the move? As far as I'm concerned, that's just noise -- if not intentional misinformation on Green's part. If Green had simply wanted to escape the stress of the harassment claim, it would have been preferable to sell to local interests and get out of town ASAP. But that would have been a fire sale. Translation: Lower sales price, less profit.

Met Center is part of the story in the sense that the team would have been worth more on the market with a better arena deal for ownership. Had the Twin Cities overcome the political hurdles and gotten a facility like the X built for the North Stars, Green would have been delighted to make his money by selling the team to Minnesotans. IMHO.

EDIT/CLARIFICATION: Overall, my theory is that he bought the team to move it. The move was happening unless there was a way to make even more money selling locally.

And all of that was after two largely contentious stadiums were built. CenturyLink Field wouldn't have even been built if the Seahawks hadn't gone pandering to the soccer community. The Sonics tried to get in on it barely 15 years after Key Arena had a remodel and got told to pound sand.

The Don Sweeney Era is off to a dreadful start. At least my college team will distract me until after we win the Frozen Four.

Stat of the day, week, month & year

@SNstats: Since 1981, 31% of all NHL players elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame have been coached by Scotty Bowman.

I hope Vegas isn't a lock because I think a team will fail miserably there.

Not sure if it's real, but just got a class action notification for NHL centre ice.

NHL will now offer individual team out-of-market packages for 20% less than the all teams package.

Yes that is correct. But you still have to be out of market of your team you want to watch.

20 percent is nice but I'm not sure they're going to get too many people to bite on it. I think if you got closer to 40/50% off you might have some takers.

At 20 percent why not just pay the whole thing and get all the games? I'm not sure you're convincing people they are getting enough of a deal at 20 percent.

I'll probably do it. I rarely ever watch different teams' games.
