NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

Re: NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

Seattle hasn't even broken ground on a new arena yet. Last I heard it was still in a bureaucratic quagmire because many of the area's current landowners and businesses oppose the proposed location. Quebec City's will open in September, so they seem the most likely to land the relocated Coyotes.

Is Hamilton "far enough" from Toronto and Buffalo?
They just kicked out the AHL club in favor of an OHL team. Could be a placeholder until an NHL team goes there, or the ownership group gave up dreams of an NHL club.

Quebec City seems to be in the lead: building ready, willing fan base... but is there an ownership group willing to step up to the plate and start out $500 million in the hole? Relocation seems to be what they're banking on.

Kansas City is rumored to be content with renting out the Sprint Center as needed for basketball and other events. Hockey would be nice, but there isn't an ownership group willing to step up.

Las Vegas is actively pursuing a franchise. MGM Grand's arena opens this fall. Pieces are there except for "expansion or relocation team?"

Seattle, as you said, is awaiting the arena. Originally, they were awaiting an NBA franchise, but the winds have shifted with the NHL talking expansion. Again, $500Mil is a steep hole to start from.

Milwaukee is getting a new arena for the Bucks. Apparently playing basketball in a building designed and built for hockey (specifically the St. Louis Blues to relocate) isn't conductive for basketball. They could share the new arena, or utilize the pretty darn good Bradley Center as is.

Houston... well, the Rockets successfully ousted the Aeros.

Thunder Bay keeps getting tossed around as an AHL franchise destination, but there isn't a decent enough sized arena there (from what I've heard).

I would imagine expansion will be just two more teams. My uneducated $0.02? Look for it to be Vegas and Seattle. And if the Coyotes relocate, they'll be kept west of the Eastern/Central time zone line to keep conference balance. Panthers OR Carolina move to Quebec.

Late to the party: 3 on 3 OT b/c they want less shootouts? How about eliminating shootouts? Derp.

Is Sweeney cleaning house and going after picks?

15th pick & 2 2nd rounders from CGY to Boston for Hamilton

Re: NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

Looks like free agent defenseman Mike Reilly will be signing a 2 way contract with the Wild. I'm guessing now they will be moving Spurgeon.

Ah, the Bruins being the Bruins... #Fail (Unless they are accumulating picks to trade for Eichel. :) )

Reilly has a lot to learn before making it to the NHL. I wouldn't discount Spurgeon just yet.
