NFL Offseason: The Saints won the Superbowl, and are now Marchin on to the NFL Draft.

Speculation now is the NFL and the Steelers are delaying action because they're waiting to see who else comes forward. The incidents are apparently up to four now.

Not sure how you can say this, nothing a DA can get a conviction on happened.

Seriously, this isn't like some unsubstantiated rumor, or something the woman completely made up. The fact that people trying to defend Big Ben have to split hairs on this is evidence that something shady went down. (If nothing else, he provided alcohol to a minor.)

Brent, I'm not getting the concept of the NFL leaving Ben alone. They didn't leave Pacman alone so why should Ben get off? If you read the description of the 2nd incident, it completely wreaks of unacceptable behavior and suggests something illegal happened, provable or not. This isn't about banning going to clubs, this is about offering free shot after free shot to young women, having a bodyguard "guide" one of them alone to a secluded room, and preventing the woman's friends from checking up on her. Not to mention appearing to do anything you can to stop the woman from leaving even when she wanted to. Rape or not, he's a scumbag and the NFL should send a message that players better wise up because this case was precariously close to putting Ben in deep s**t. That's why you suspend him and why they don't need to go to the extreme of banning clubbing.

Pacman was also arrested, charged, etc. That's the difference.

Like I said, I don't think the league should be able to punish a player on suspicion alone.

Now, tcbg brings up a good point: providing alcohol to a minor. Ok, that should be punished.

And again, do I think Ben is innocent? Not in the least. Is he guilty of rape? I have no idea.

Didn't it say that this all happened in a bar/club? In that case, it would be that bar/club that would have been providing alcohol to the minor, not Ben. For example, if you are at a bar, and you buy a drink for a girl, the bar is responsible to making sure that she is over 21, that isn't on you.

With that said, I'm on the side that thinks that this whole thing stinks and something should be done. But like Brent said, you start walking a thin line as soon as you begin suspending players when there isn't a good enough case for it to even go to court.

Roger Goodell was on the Dan Patrick Show this morning, and confirmed that Ben had violated the "personal conduct policy" and that he is concerned about a "pattern of behavior."

My bet is 4 games.

My bet is 4 games as well, but could be reduced to 2 if Ben meets certain conditions.

According to Sirius NFL Radio, a three-way trade:

Eagles get: Ernie Sims
Lions get: Tony Scheffler
Broncos get: draft pick (didn't catch the round)

T-Scheff is coming home. This is a huge win for the Lions.

Cleansing the team of all Millen draft picks is a good way to clean house. Scheffler and Pettigrew now give Stafford a couple of good safety valves when he's eventually flushed out of the pocket.

I wouldn't even call Scheff a safety valve. He's a legit slot receiver if used properly (like he was in Denver before Cutler left).

Certainly he's now the second best pass catcher on the team, but his role will likely be as a TE and catch passes in the short flats. It's a good get for the offense without a doubt.

Now can Buffalo cleanse the team of Chan Gailey and Buddy Nix. :D :D

Supposedly the plan is to run 2WR, 2TE and use Scheffler similarly to how Dallas Clark gets used in Indy, ie: making him a slot receiver on occasion.

It's not punishing on suspicion, it's punishing for the fact that he was in that situation, and for the negative image it portrays, i.e. violating the personal conduct policy:

Not necessarily. Yes, the bar assumes responsibility, but once they let in someone who is underage, anyone buying them drinks can be subjected to similar charges. (I'm sure this varies from state to state, though.)

Interesting. Johnson and Burleson on the outside with Pettigrew and Scheffler on the inside.

I... Actually like this. Wow.

sorta like if you pick up a 14yo girl in there and take her home and DL her... you can't say, "i thought she was of age.. she was in a bar!!"

Re: NFL Offseason: The Saints won the Superbowl, and are now Marchin on to the NFL Draft.

Asked by Patrick whether there has been a violation of the NFL's personal conduct policy, Goodell replied, "Yes, there has been a violation of that."

"The issue here is with respect to a pattern of behavior and bad judgments," Goodell said on Patrick's radio program. "You do not have to be convicted or even charged of a crime to be able to demonstrate that you've violated a personal conduct policy, and reflect poorly not only on themselves, but all of their teammates, every NFL player in the league and everyone associated with the NFL. And that is what my concern is, and I have expressed that directly to Ben, obviously, and I will be making a decision as soon as I possibly can."

The talking heads over at the Mother Ship are saying Ben could get the same six game suspension Vick got, but it could be reduced with good behavior and if Ben meets certain conditions. Vick's suspension was lowered to two games.

Re: NFL Offseason: The Saints won the Superbowl, and are now Marchin on to the NFL Draft.

A lot of the commenters at PFT are taking umbrage with them, but I think Florio's thoughts here are right on the money -- and a pretty good window into why some announcers seem so off the mark when they're supposed to be experts in the game.
Like most of the folks who have watched it, we were fascinated by ESPN's recent "QB Camp" special featuring Jon Gruden, who dusted off the role of head coach and conducted a film review session with the four top quarterback prospects in this year's draft: Sam Bradford, Jimmy Clausen, Colt McCoy, and Tim Tebow. It provided excellent insight into the manner in which coaches and quarterbacks communicate, and it reintroduced us all to "Chucky," who had traded in his snarling scowl when he stepped into the broadcast booth.

It also made us even more frustrated by Gruden's ultra-positive shtick when he's working games. If he'd bring to football season the same attitude that he employed when dealing with the incoming rookies, Monday Night Football immediately would reclaim the status of appointment viewing that disappeared once Howard Cosell made his exit.

"We criticize, we analyze, we work it," Gruden said during the show, even though McCoy at times didn't seem to be happy with Gruden's scrutiny, which included Gruden making a crack about McCoy's height and making fun of McCoy's Texas twang.

So why won't Gruden criticize, analyze, and/or work it when rubbing elbows with Mike Tirico and Ron Jaworski?

The prevailing opinion is that Gruden wants to return to coaching, and that he's deliberately being careful not to say anything during game broadcasts that could alienate any owners, players, front-office personnel, assistant coaches, and/or fan bases. Surely, he wants a bidding war to emerge for his services; burning bridges isn't the way to make that happen.

Last year, Gruden defended his happy-thoughts approach in an interview with Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports. "I'll be honest with you -- I've been criticized by some for being too positive, for loving everybody because I'm trying to get this job or that job," Gruden said. "That's a crock. I love the game, OK -- and I'm enthusiastic because of it. There are positives about everybody, and I try to find them."

Except, of course, when trying to demonstrate to NFL owners and General Managers that he knows how to point out and correct the negatives in a young quarterback.

Goodell says all Week 17 games this year will be divisional matchups.
