NFL 2009 (or, in Super Bowl nomenclature, MMIX)

What's hilarious is, given the non-tangibles of sports fans.....Elvis Grbac.....ELVIS!!!! was rated higher than Unitas. Really think about that. Think of all the ESPN NFL Tonight insults, the internet commentary, and then compare it to one of the best field generals in history.

I'd rather deal with a decade worth of rookie posters on here than think about how the QB thing is possible.

Re: NFL 2009 (or, in Super Bowl nomenclature, MMIX)

True, but if you look at Namath he's got something like 170td's and 220 picks...and a career losing record. Sometimes makes you wonder how much romanticism plays into things at times.

(not going to look it up) didn't he try to hang on when his career was really done? Rams maybe? Does that change the stats significantly?

Not really, actually. I was kind of surprised myself.

I'm pretty sure his entire franchise is based on about one game.*

* Part of what has me going here is I have a friend who is a baseball freak. And I mean freak as in writing his masters thesis on it. Problem is, he's romantic as hell. Refuses to acknowledge anything statistical, thinks the pitchers that pitched 80000 innings in the early part of the century are BETTER than those of today, thinks Babe Ruth would have 1200 homers if he played now, etc. And I'm not exaggerating.

Point is, not sure how I got on Namath, but some of these guys are lucky as hell they didn't play in an era where the exposure is at a level like it is today.

Oh I hear ya. I just find it screwdriver-in-the-eyeball annoying when someone refers to a QB rating and then uses that to justify an Elvis/Johnny comparison.

By the way, I may now lose my fantasy football matchup by one point if they decide that muffed punt was a fumble recovery for fantasy football purposes.

Hell, since it's that amusing to me, I'll save you all the time and link it:

Holy *. Just noticed that Joey Harrington is rated higher than Joe Namath.
That makes sense, because Joe Namath wasn't actually all that good of a quarterback.

In one of my fantasy leagues, I need 0.11 points combined from Vincent Jackson and Nate Kaeding tonight to win, so I guess that's a pretty safe bet. In the other league, I need about 40 points from Tomlinson, because practically everybody on my opponent's team exploded (20 points from Zach Miller? Are you ****ing serious?) and I once again made the wrong choice between Matt Ryan and Favre.

Re: NFL 2009 (or, in Super Bowl nomenclature, MMIX)

From this morning's Journal Sentinel...

"To McCarthy's credit, he kept banging Ryan Grant against Cunningham's jammed box in the first half."

No way that sentence constructed itself by accident. :)

Re: NFL 2009 (or, in Super Bowl nomenclature, MMIX)

I think I have this week of fantasy football won again. My opponent needs about 20 points from Nate Keading to get close to me. That moves me to 6-0, and after beating the second place team this week my closest competitor is 4-2. I still can't figure out how I'm pulling this off, since this is the first time I've ever played fantasy football.
According to the list, the best Vikings QB's in order...

1) Daunte Culpepper
2) BrettFavre
3) Rich Gannon
4) Brad Johnson
5) Randall Cunningham
6) Warren Moon
7) Jeff George
8) Fran Tarkenton
9) Jay Fiedler
10) Wade Wilson
11) Gus Frerotte
12) Tommy Kramer
13) Bubby Brister

...hilarious :D
This tells me that the Vikings usually have really chitty quarterbacks.

I'm up by 5 and he has no one left...as long as Rivers, Gates, and Royal don't combine for -5, I think I'm OK.

Though I do need at least 20 points from them to stay in first. I feel a little bad for the commish, he's about to go 1-5 and he only has 12 points less then me total (though that will increase this week)...oh, well, it's his fault in the first place...:p

Re: NFL 2009 (or, in Super Bowl nomenclature, MMIX)

You know what I just realized? The Giants may have gotten torched by the Saints, but they still had the least embarrassing loss of anybody in the division yesterday.

Re: NFL 2009 (or, in Super Bowl nomenclature, MMIX)

He may not get 90 receptions again, but that Eddie Royal is starting to have himself a season. 2 TD returns, and team mini-hoodie takes the lead.

Re: NFL 2009 (or, in Super Bowl nomenclature, MMIX)

This is old school AFL football. Where are Charlie Jones and Al DeRogatis?

Last team with the ball wins tonight! :D

Re: NFL 2009 (or, in Super Bowl nomenclature, MMIX)

Okay, that Lovie Smith commercial was not nearly as good as the first one.

Re: NFL 2009 (or, in Super Bowl nomenclature, MMIX)

I have officially retained 1st in my league...:D

I'm tied for most amount of points this week at the moment. :)

Re: NFL 2009 (or, in Super Bowl nomenclature, MMIX)

FF question. Current lineup for Sunday:

RB - Adrian Peterson - @Pit (ave 18.0)
RB - Cedric Benson - Chi (13.3)
RB/WR - Marion Barber - Atl (10.2)
WR - Hines Ward - Min (11.7)
WR - Sidney Rice - @Pit (8.3)

Bench:

Mario Manningham - Ari (10.2)
Ricky Williams - NO - (11.4)
Austin Collie - @StL - (7.6)

I think I'm good with AP, CB and MB but am open to suggestions with RW. Not sure I like Rice and could swap him out for MM or AC. Indy has a favorable matchup (not sure about the Ari pass def) and MM is a bit banged up. Any thoughts?

Re: NFL 2009 (or, in Super Bowl nomenclature, MMIX)

I think I managed to improve my FF team by picking up some free agents. My running back situation was sad, I had Fred Jackson and Larry Johnson behind Jones-Drew. Jones-Drew is a stud, but I needed someone better than Jackson and Johnson, especially next weekend when Jones-Drew is on a bye. So I found that Felix Jones is a free agent and should be back from his injury this week, I picked him up. I also dumped Mark Clayton for Sidney Rice. Now my roster looks like:

Philip Rivers - QB
Matt Ryan - QB
Maurice Jones-Drew - RB
Fred Jackson - RB
Felix Jones - RB
Andre Johnson - WR
Marques Colston - WR
DeSean Jackson - WR
Sidney Rice - WR
Johnny Knox - WR
Vernon Davis - TE
Brent Celek - TE
Rian Lindell - K
Minnesota - D

Re: NFL 2009 (or, in Super Bowl nomenclature, MMIX)

My 10-4 week in the office pool was good enough for a three way tie for 1st. Then my 45pts were the most for the tie breaker!!! Winner winner, chicken dinner. ;)
